Experiments on steady state particle control in Tore Supra and DIII-D

Description: Particle control is playing an increasingly important role in tokamak plasma performance. The present paper discusses particle control of hydrogen/deuterium by wall pumping on graphite or carbonized surfaces, as well as by external exhaust with pumped limiters and pumped divertors. Wall pumping is ultimately a transient effect and by itself not suitable for steady state particle exhaust. Therefore, external exhaust techniques with pumped divertors and limiters are being developed. How wall pumping phenomena interact and correlate with these inherently steady state, external exhaust techniques, is not well known to date. In the present paper, the processes involved in wall pumping and in external pumping are investigated in an attempt to evaluate the effect of external exhaust on wall pumping. Some of the key elements of this analysis are: (1) charge-exchange fluxes to the wall play a crucial role in the core-wall particle dynamics, (2) the recycling fluxes of thermal molecules have a high probability of ionization in the scrape-off layer, (3) thermal particles originating from the wall, which are ionized within the scrape-off layer, can be directly exhausted, thus providing a direct path between wall and exhaust which can be used to control the wall inventory. This way, the wall can be kept in a continuous pumping state in the sense that it continuously absorbs energetic particles and releases thermal molecules which are then removed by the external exhaust mechanism. While most of the ingredients of this analysis have been observed individually before, the present evaluation is an attempt to correlate effects of wall recycling and external exhaust.

Limits on the anomalous ZZ{gamma} and Z{gamma}{gamma} couplings in p{anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: The authors performed a direct search for the anomalous ZZ{gamma} and Z{gamma}{gamma} couplings by studying p{anti p} {yields} {ell}{ell}{gamma} + X, ({ell} = e, {mu}) events at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A fit to the transverse energy spectrum of the photon in the signal events, based on the data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.3 pb{sup {minus}1} (13.7 pb{sup {minus}1}) for the electron (muon) channel, yields the following 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous CP-conserving ZZ{gamma} couplings: {vert_bar}h{sub 30}{sup Z}{vert_bar} < 1.8 (h{sub 40}{sup Z} = 0), and {vert_bar}h{sub 40}{sup Z}{vert_bar} < 0.5 (h{sub 30}{sup Z} = 0), for a form-factor scale {Lambda} = 500 GeV. Limits for the Z{gamma}{gamma} couplings and CP-violating couplings are also discussed.

Growth of laser-induced damage during repetitive illumination of HfO2-SiO2 multilayer mirror and polarizer coatings

Description: As peak fluence of high power lasers is increased, it becomes necessary to tolerate damage on mirrors, polarizers. To study how different types of damage morphologies initiate and grow during repetitive illumination, hafnia-silica multilayer mirror and polarizer coatings were laser damage tested. The coatings were prepared by e-beam evaporation and irradiated with a 3-ns pulse at 1064 nm. The damage morphology was recorded after each shot to determine the types of damage that cause massive unstable failure and lower the optic`s functional damage threshold. Results were summarized on damage stability maps plotting the average damage size vs number of shots for fluences ranging from 10 to 40 J/cm{sup 2}. The maps indicate that the commonly observed damage morphologies (pits, flat bottom pits, scalds, outer layer delamination) have distinct growth behaviors and influence the value of the functional damage threshold differently. While pits are stable up to fluences as high as 40 J/cm{sup 2}, flat bottom pits can grow during repetitive illumination above a critical fluence of about 35 J/cm{sup 2}. Scalds are formed in the first shot and never grow at fluences below 40 J/cm{sup 2}. Finally, delaminates are highly unstable and have the potential for damaging the coating catastrophically above 15 J/cm{sup 2}. Results show that delaminate damage should be prevented; this knowledge has allowed coatings development efforts to focus on eliminating the origin of such damage morphology.

Proceedings of the seminar on leak before break in reactor piping and vessels

Description: The objective of the seminar was to present the current state of the art in Leak-Before-Break (LBB) methodology development, validation, and application in an international forum. With particular emphasis on industrial applications and regulatory policies, the seminar provided an opportunity to compare approaches, experiences, and codifications developed by different countries. The seminar was organized into four topic areas: status of LBB applications; technical issues in LBB methodology; complementary requirements (leak detection and inspection); LBB assessment and margins. As a result of this seminar, an improved understanding of LBB gained through sharing of different viewpoints from different countries, permits consideration of: simplified pipe support design and possible elimination of loss-of-coolant-accident (LOCA) mechanical consequences for specific cases; defense-in-depth type of applications without support modifications; support of safety cases for plants designed without the LOCA hypothesis. In support of these activities, better estimates of the limits to the LBB approach should follow, as well as an improvement in codifying methodologies. Secondary phase formation and the microstructural evolution of surface layers during vapor phase alteration of the French SON 68 nuclear waste glass at 200{degrees}C

Description: The SON 68 inactive {open_quotes}R7T7{close_quotes} composition is the French reference glass for the LWR nuclear waste glass. Vapor phase alteration was used to accelerate the reaction progress of glass corrosion and to develop the characteristic suite of secondary, alteration phases. Extensive solid-state characterization (AEM/SEM/HRTEM) was completed on six inactive R7T7 waste glasses which were altered in the presence of saturated water vapor (200{degrees}C) for 91, 241, 908, 1000, 1013, and 1021 days. The AEM samples were examined in cross-section (lattice-fringe imaging, micro-diffraction, and quantitative thin-film EDS analysis). The glass monoliths were invariably covered with a thin altered rind. The layer became thicker with time: 0.5 {mu}m for 22 days; 4 {mu}m for 91 days; 6 {mu}m for 241 days; 10 {mu}m for 908 days; 26 {mu}m for 1013 days; and <35 {mu}m for 1021 days. The composite alteration layer of the SON 68 samples is at least four time less thick than that of the SRL 131 glass composition. Six distinctive zones, based on phase chemistry and microstructure, were distinguished within the well-developed surface layers. Numerous crystalline phases such as analcime, tobermorite, apatite, and weeksite were identified on the surfaces of the reacted glasses as precipitates. Two crystalline phases, Ag{sub 2}TeO{sub 3} and (Ca,Sr)Mo{sub 3}O{sub 9}(OH){sub 2}, were found within the inner zones of surface layers, and they must have nucleated in situ, indicating that Ag, Te, Sr, and Mo can be retained within the surface layer. The majority of the surface layer volume is composed of two morphologically and chemically different structures: one consists of well-crystallized fibrous smectite aggregates occurring along with cavities, the A-domain; and the other consists of poorly-crystallized regions containing needle-like smectite (montmorillonite) crystallites, a silica-rich amorphous matrix, and possibly ZrO{sub 2} particles, the B-domain.

Efficient analytic computation of higher-order QCD amplitudes

Description: The authors review techniques simplifying the analytic calculation of one-loop QCD amplitudes with many external legs, for use in next-to-leading-order corrections to multi-jet processes. Particularly useful are the constraints imposed by perturbative unitarity, collinear singularities and a supersymmetry-inspired organization of helicity amplitudes. Certain sequences of one-loop helicity amplitudes with an arbitrary number of external gluons have been obtained using these constraints.

Update of GALLEX solar neutrino results and implications

Description: The galliumchloride detector operated by the GALLEX-collaboration in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory responds primarily to pp-neutrinos. They are produced in the primary fusion reaction of hydrogen into deuterium and directly coupled to the solar luminosity. Standard Solar Models predict ca. 58% of the total signal expected in GALLEX (123-132 SNU) to be due to pp-neutrinos. The relative pp-neutrino dominance becomes even larger if the deficit of higher energy neutrinos (as observed in the Homestake- and Kamiokande experiments) is considered. During the first data taking period, 15 solar runs had been performed within the exposure period 14.5.1991 - 29.4.1992. The result, 81 {+-} 17 {+-} 9 SNU provided the first experimental evidence for pp-neutrinos from the Sun. At the same time, it confirmed the depression of higher energy neutrino fluxes relative to the model predictions. Here the authors report the results of 15 more solar neutrino runs, covering the period 19.8.92 - 13.10.93. They obtain 78 {+-} 13 {+-} 5 SNU. Evaluated together, the result for all 30 runs is 79 {+-} 10 {+-} 6 SNU. While the SNU rate of GALLEX I is well reproduced the statistical error has been reduced so substantially that a value of signal +2{sigma} is required to accommodate not only pp-and pep- but also the {sup 7}Be-neutrino induced {sup 71}Ge-production. Contrary, the fate of {sup 8}B-neutrinos has only little discernible effect on the GALLEX data. In conclusion, with the present errors GALLEX constitutes a 2.5 {sigma} problem for {sup 7}Be neutrinos within the frame of {open_quotes}astrophysical{close_quotes} solutions. Alternatively, the particle physics solution (MSW-effect) can consistently explain all available solar neutrino results, leading to a most probable mass scale with the muon-neutrino at approximately 3 meV (milli-eV). However, since the GALLEX result allows the presence of pp and pep neutrinos at full strength. the latter ...

The results of the first 27 desorptions are presented. We also describe our low level proportional counters including the counting system.

Jet Production at D0

Description: We report on preliminary measurements of the central ({vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar}<0.5) inclusive jet cross section and the dijet angular distributions ({vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar}<3) at {radical}s=1.8 TeV. The data were collected during the 1992-1993 and 1994-1995 runs at the Fermilab Tevatron p{anti p} Collider with the D0 detector. The measurements are in excellent agreement with next-to- leading order (NLO) QCD. Given the assumptions implicit in the theoretical models, we exclude quark compositeness to the 95% confidence level on a scale of {Lambda}{sub +}=2 TeV.

The dijet mass spectrum and angular distributions with the D0 detector

Observation of the top quark

Description: The D{O} collaboration reports on a search for the Standard Model top quark in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 50 pb{sup -1}. We have searched for t{bar t} production in the dilepton and single-lepton decay channels, with and without tagging of b quark jets. We observe 17 events with an expected background of 3.8 {+-} 0.6 events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2 x 10{sup -6} (equivalent to 4.6 standard deviations). The kinematic properties of the excess events are consistent with top quark decay. We conclude that we have observed the top quark and measure its mass to be 199{sub -21}{sup +19} (stat.) {+-}22 (syst.) GeV/c{sup 2}1 and its production cross section to be 6.4 {+-} 2.2 pb. Other decay channels are under study such as the t{bar t} to all-jets channel which might yield additional information about the top quark.

Transverse energy distributions within jets in p{anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: The distribution of the transverse energy in jets has been measured in p{anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. This measurement of the jet shape is made as a function of jet transverse energy in both the central and forward rapidity regions. Jets are observed to narrow both with increasing transverse energy and with increasing rapidity. Next-to-leading order partonic QCD calculations are compared to the data. Although the calculations qualitatively describe the data, they are shown to be very dependent on renormalization scale, parton clustering algorithm and jet direction definition and fail to consistently describe the data in all regions.

Search for W boson pair production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: The results of a search for W boson pair production in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV with subsequent decay to dilepton (e{mu}, ee, and {mu}{mu}) channels are presented. One event is observed with an expected background of 0.56 {plus_minus} 0.13 events with an integrated luminosity of approximately 14 pb{sup {minus}1}. Assuming equal strengths for the WWZ and WW{gamma} gauge boson coupling parameters {kappa} and {lambda}, limits on the CP-conserving anomalous coupling constants are {minus}2.6 < {delta}{kappa} < 2.8 and {minus}2.1 {lambda} < 2.1 at the 95% confidence level.

Search for top in lepton + jets in D0 using a topological tag

Description: We have searched for production of t{bar t} pairs in p{bar p} interactions at 1.8 TeV center-of-mass energy at the FNAL Tevatron collider. The search assumes standard model decay for top quark into W + b quark. We observe in {mu} + jets and 14 + jets final states a small, not statistically significant, excess above the background estimated by two different methods. The results presented are preliminary.

Searches for supersymmetry and Higgs particles with D-Zero

Description: We report on searches for the Supersymmetric and the neutral scalar particles with the D{null} detector at {radical}{ital s} = 1.8 TeV. The inclusive jet cross section at {radical}s = 630 GeV at D0

Search for a fourth generation charge {minus}1/3 quark via flavor changing neutral currents

Description: There is some likelihood that a light (< m{sub t}) fourth generation charge -1/3 quark (b{prime}) would decay predominantly via loop induced flavor changing neutral currents. The charged current decay of b{prime} to charm would be highly Cabibbo suppressed due to the fact that it changes the generation number by two. The D0 experiment has searched for b{prime} pair production where one or both b{prime} quarks decays via b{prime} {r_arrow} b+{gamma}, giving signatures photon + three jets and two photons + two jets. WE don not see a significant excess of such events over background. In both modes, we set an upper limit on the cross section times branching ratio that is sufficient to rule out a standard sequential b{prime} decaying predominantly via FCNC in the mass range m{sub Z}/2 < m{sub b{prime}} < m{sub Z} + m{sub b}. For b{prime} masses larger than this, the dominant FCNC decay mode is expected to be b{prime} {r_arrow} b + Z. 14 refs., 13 figs., 5 tabs.

SUGRA-GUT motivated SUSY search in the dielectron channel at D0

Description: In this paper we present a search for events consistent with the production and decay of supersymmetric particles in the Supergravity- GUT framework in the D{null} detector at Fermilab. We examine the 1994-95 Run 1B data for events containing two or more electrons, two or more jets, and a substantial missing transverse energy. This is complementary to the search in the canonical jets and missing transverse energy channel. We observe 2 events in 92.9 pb{sup -1} or the Run 1B data consistent with the estimated total background contribution of 3.0 {+-} 1.3 events from the Standard Model. The non- observation of excess events has been interpreted as an excluded region on the two-dimensional {ital m}{sub 0} - {ital m}{sub 1/2} plane.

Rapidity gaps in jet events at DØ

Description: Preliminary results from the D0 experiment on jet production with rapidity gaps in p{bar p} collisions are presented. A class of dijet events with a forward rapidity gap is observed at center-of-mass energies {radical}s = 1800 GeV and 630 GeV. The number of events with rapidity gaps at both center-of-mass energies is significantly greater than the expectation from multiplicity fluctuations and is consistent with a hard single diffractive process. A class of events with two forward gaps and central dijets is also observed at 1800 GeV. This topology is consistent with hard double pomeron exchange. We also present results on the observation of a class of events with low particle multiplicity between jets, attributable to the exchange of a strongly-interacting color-singlet.

The inclusive jet cross section in {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV

Description: We report on the preliminary measurement of the inclusive jet cross section for {vert_bar}{eta}{vert_bar} {le} 0.5 at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. Two data sets with integrated luminosities of 91 pb{sup {minus}1} and 14 pb{sup {minus}1} were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron {ovr p}p Collider with the D0 detector. The inclusive jet cross sections are measured and reported as a function of transverse jet energy (35 GeV {le} E{sub T} {le} 470 GeV) are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order QCD. 11 refs., 4 figs.

A study of multi-jet production ratios in p{anti p} collisions at D0

Description: The authors study inclusive jet multiplicity ratios in multi-jet events from p{anti p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV recorded using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Preliminary average multi-jet production ratios are presented as a function of the scalar jet transverse energy and compared to NLO calculations.
