Characterization of Si Nanostructured Surfaces

Description: Surface texturing of Si to enhance absorption particularly in the IR spectral region has been extensively investigated. Previous research chiefly examined approaches based on geometrical optics. These surface textures typically consist of pyramids with dimensions much larger than optical wavelengths. We have investigated a physical optics approach that relies on surface texture features comparable to, or smaller than, the optical wavelengths inside the semiconductor material. Light interaction … more

Periodic arrays of pinning centers in thin vanadium films.

Description: Commensurability effects between the superconducting flux line lattice and a square lattice (period d=1{micro}m and diameter D=0.4{micro}m) of submicron holes in 1500 {angstrom} vanadium films were studied by atomic force microscopy, DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, magnetoresistivity and I-V measurements. Peaks in the magnetization and critical current at matching fields are found to depend nonlinearly upon the value of external AC field or current, as well as the inferred symmetry of the … more

Nano-patterning of Co/Pt multilayers.

Description: One of the most promising new systems for both basic research and technical development are the periodic arrays of nano-magnetic elements, as shown. Such arrays show remarkably rich and novel magnetic behavior. Periodic magnetic arrays not only provide excellent opportunities for new science but also constitute a promising candidate for new applications such as high-density, patterned magnetic memory for advanced computer designs in the next decade. In the presentation they will focus on patter… more

Pulsed laser processing of high temperature superconducting thin films

Description: Systematic studies of the effects of pulsed laser deposition processing parameters on plume dynamics and resultant film properties have been performed. Plume angular distributions, cos{sup m}({theta}), were observed to be variable between 1 > m > 10 depending on laser energy density and spot size. Under optimized conditions, epitaxial, superconducting thin films could be grown in-situ on a variety of single-crystal substrates. High quality, 200 nm thick films were obtained at deposition rates a… more
