The History of the Trombone from the Renaissance to the Early Romantic Period

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to show the development of the trombone, in form and music, and its use in the orchestra through the times of Beethoven and Schubert. Since very little material has been presented concerning the history of the trombone, it is hoped that the illustrations and explanations contained herein will be a contribution toward a representation of music from different composers and periods. The music covered gives a picture of the use of the trombone from the Renaissance through to the beginning of the Romantic Period. The results of this study are presented in three main sections: (1) The history of the trombone in the Renaissance; (2) The history of the trombone in the Baroque; (3) The history of the trombone in the Classical Period, and up to the time of Schubert.

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to give the reader an insight into the development of solo trumpet literature as well as to present historical information concerning the development of the trumpet and the effect it had on the literature written for that instrument. Only music originally written for trumpet will be considered as the many transcriptions of older music that now appears are not characteristic of the idiomatic writing for trumpet at that time.

A History of the Music and Composers for the Brass Ensemble Medium Before the Nineteenth Century

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to bring to light some of the music written for, or especially adaptable to, brass ensembles before the close of the eighteenth century. This study must concern itself with the music which has been preserved and is available, and with such music as can be played on modern instruments. It must be stated that some of the music mentioned herein was not written specifically for brass instruments, but the style and general character of the music make it adaptable for a brass instrumentation.

Evolution of the Role of the Solo Trombone in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries: A Lecture Recital Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of Frescobaldi, White, Druckman, Jones, Blaecher, Ott, and Others

Description: The evolution of the role of the trombone as a solo instrument in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries can be traced most effectively through four schools of playing, with the music of today's avant-garde being a logical historical culmination of these four schools. It will be demons t rated that the avant-garde's use of the solo trombone has merely continued the evolutionary process started in the early nineteenth century. The contribution of the early nineteenth-century virtuosi was the establishment of the idea that the trombone could compete on its own terms with other instruments as a solo instrument. In addition to expanding the technical capabilities, they also left a basic solo repertoire. With the death of the virtuosi the trombone as a solo instrument went into a decline. For the remainder of the nineteenth century and well into the twentieth century the Paris Conservatoire was influential. Standards of solo performance were brought to new heights by excellent study material and contest solos. The next important step came from the late nineteenth-century American band virtuosi. Their influence helped the public to accept the idea of the trombone as a solo instrument. The American jazz trombonists of the 1930's and 1940's also further widened the technical capabilities of the trombone and also further encouraged acceptance of the Instrument in its solo capacity. However, their most important contribution was in new tonal colors. The music of the avant-garde takes all these previous historical achievements and makes use of them in its own unique way.

A Study of Four Solo Works for Tuba

Description: This study will include four compositions which were composed between the years 1955 and 1963. With the exception of the Serenade No. 12, for solo tuba, by Vincent Persichetti, all of the works are for the tuba and piano. The purpose of this thesis is to study each composition to determine the essential features of the music in regard to the composers' structural, melodic, and harmonic stylistic characteristics. The conclusions of the study will be found in the final chapter.

The Bass Trombone and Its Use in Selected Works of Smetana, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak

Description: The selected works by the composers studied in this thesis might well stand as illustrative of the normal development of the use of the bass trombone near the close of the nineteenth century. Although notable progress was made by the cited composers in increasing the bass trombone's usefulness in the orchestra, each composer also continued to use the bass trombone as it had been used in previous years, such as in doubling bass parts, harmonic backgrounds, and for strong rhythmic punctuations.

A Study of Stravinsky's Use of the Trombone in Selected Works

Description: The primary objectives of this paper are to deal with Stravinsky's use of the trombone and to study the different methods of scoring for the instrument which he has employed in his works. In order to make this discussion more meaningful, the first chapter contains a brief history of the use and the development of the instrument from the fifteenth century up until 1900. In the second chapter Stravinsky's major works are divided into three periods, and each is individually discussed. The general characteristics common to the related major works are pointed out to provide an understanding of each period. The remainder of the paper is devoted to a study of Stravinsky's trombone scoring in three of his major works, one from each period. A concluding chapter summarizes his writing for the trombone as exemplified by these three works, and surveys the scoring for trombone in some of his other works.

The Solo Trombone Works of Kazimierz Serocki, A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works by W. Hartley, P. Dubois, H. Dutilleux, H. Tomasi, G. Jacobs, L. Grondahl, J. Aubain and Others

Description: The three recitals consisted of performances of original twentieth century solo works for trombone with the exception of two trombone quartets, Adagio, by C. Saint-Saëns, arranged by Ken Murley, and Sonata by Daniel Speer. The lecture recital establishes the position of Kazimierz Serocki (1922-1981) as a major composer not only in Poland but in the rest of the world as well. His many works cover a wide spectrum of styles and genres. The solo trombone works, in particular, are among his most often performed works from his early neoclassic period. The lecture is also an attempt to illuminate the role of neoclassicism in Poland through a brief discussion of Polish neoclassicists, Grażyna Bacewicz and Michael Spisak, and other composers before and after World War II including Constantin Regamey and Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. An analysis of the two solo trombone works, Sonatina and Concerto, shows the technique of composition used by Serocki and the demands placed upon the performer by the music. These works were among the first in a growing list of works for solo trombone composed in response to the notable lack of large scale works of quality for solo trombone during the early twentieth century. The high quality of performance demanded by these works did much to advance the trombone as a solo instrument in the twentieth century.

Bach's Six Suites for Solo Violoncello, BWV 1007-1012; Their History and Problems of Transcription and Performance for the Trombone, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works by Paul Hindemith, Georg Christoph Wagenseil, Richard Monaco, Darius Milhaud, Nino Rota, Giovanni B. Pergolesi, and Others

Description: The dissertation consists of four recitals: three solo recitals and one lecture recital. The repertoire of all the programs contained both music written specifically for the trombone and transcriptions from various other instruments. The lecture recital, "J. s. Bach's Six Suites for Solo Violoncello, BWV 1007-1012? Their History and Problems of Transcription and Performance for the Trombone," was presented on June 20, 1983. The lecture was an attempt to illuminate the rationale and performance problems of transcribing the Bach 'cello suites to the modern tenor trombone with an F attachment and also to provide background information on the suites and the early solo emergence of the violoncello. The program included the performance of the Suite No. 2_ in d minor, BWV 1008, with the movements: Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Minuets I and II, and Gigue.

The Trombone in German and Austrian Ensemble Sonatas of the Late Seventeenth Century a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of Presser, Bozza, George, Beethoven, Stevens, Wilder, White, Spillman, Tuthill and Others

Description: The dissertation consists of four recitals. Three solo recitals featured a variety of selected works for bass trombone and piano by traditional and contemporary composers. The lecture recital, entitled "The Trombone in German and Austrian Ensemble Sonatas of the Late Seventeenth Century," is a study which examines the role of the trombone, both as a solo and ensemble instrument, and the functions of the instrument in ensemble sonatas of the late seventeenth century. The trombone's use in instrumental ensembles was traced from the fifteenth century to the present. The program included selections by German composers Daniel Speer and Matthias Weckmann, and Austrian composers Autonio Bertali, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel's "Concerto a Tromba principale": A Lecture Recital; Together with Three Other Recitals

Description: The lecture was given on April 21, 1980. The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of gathering information on the composer Johann Hummel, the performer Anton Weidinger, the keyed trumpet, for which the concerto was written, the concerto itself, and its ornaments, and in determining the correct performance practices of the ornaments. Sources written in the middle to late eighteenth century and from the first third of the nineteenth century gave valuable insight into the facts and attitudes concerning the composer, the performer, the instrument, and the concerto in question. Other information came from present day authorities writing in texts, periodicals, and reference works.
