REACTOR CONTAINMENT (INCLUDING A TECHNICAL PROGRESS REVIEW)

Description: An attempt is made to present available information pentinent to reactor containment. This is done directly, by summary and reference, or by reference alone. To provide a reference framework, the first review document must necessarily be handled differently from supplemental periodic reviews. The plan is to: (3) provide a detailed account of the problem and suggestions for work needed to yield adequate solutions; (2) present the accumulated knowledge and accomplishments; (3) give an account of experience in applying the containment concept; and (4) append extensive bibliographical material. An attempt is made in each case to indicate the significance of the information and its relation to the problems outlined. (A.C.)

FEASIBILITY REPORT ON FAST EXPONENTIAL EXPERIMENT

Description: The general program established at Argonne National Laboratory in connection with the Fast Power Breeder Reactor (P BR) includes performance of exponential experiments on assemblies having compositions which may exist in the reactor core. This report deals with that phase of the program known as the Fast Exponential Experiment which may be described very briefly as follows: An assembly of fissile U/sup 235/ and fertile material (too small to be self- critical) intermixed with poisons (such as are encountered in the mechanical structure and coolant system of a self-sustaining reactor) is fed with neutr ons from an auxiliary source. By measurements of the neutron flux within the assembly, important parameters can be calculated which are necessary to the proper design of an actual critical reactor of the same composition. (auth)

HAZARD EVALUATION REPORT ON THE FAST REACTOR ZERO POWER EXPERIMENT (ZPR- III)

Description: An evaluation was made of the hazards associated with studies of the use of U/sup 235/ as fuel in the Fast Reactor Zero Power Experiment (ZPR-III) in the design of EBR-II. The systems are blanketed cores having a range of compositions in which the volume fractions of U/sup 235/, U/sup 238/ Fe, and Na are varied. Methods used for protection against accident or damage are described. Excursions resulting if the safety mechanisms did not operate are discussed. (M.C.G.)
