Particle evaporation spectra with inclusion of thermal shape fluctuations

Description: The origin of the substantial sub-Coulomb component observed in proton and /sup 4/He evaporation spectra at high excitation energy is attributed to the thermal excitation of shape degrees of freedom. A critique of the Hauser-Feshbach theory as used in evaporation codes is presented. A new formalism including the thermal excitation of collective modes as well as quantal penetration in the framework of a transition state approach is derived. 5 figs.

Likelihood analysis of parity violation in the compound nucleus

Description: We discuss the determination of the root mean-squared matrix element of the parity-violating interaction between compound-nuclear states using likelihood analysis. We briefly review the relevant features of the statistical model of the compound nucleus and the formalism of likelihood analysis. We then discuss the application of likelihood analysis to data on panty-violating longitudinal asymmetries. The reliability of the extracted value of the matrix element and errors assigned to the matrix e… more

New integrated polysilicon photoconductors for ultrafast measurements on silicon

Description: A fully-integrated silicon-optical-switch technology is reported that demonstrates one picosecond sampling aperture when excited by a femtosecond laser. Fabrication of the polycrystalline-silicon-switch structure is accomplished with standard-integrated-circuit processing techniques to insure full compatibility with standard-VLSI processes. Photoresist-masked ion-beam irradiation is used to generate trapping sites in the photoconductive layer and tailor the switch on-time. Limited optimization … more

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium emission of complex fragments

Description: Complex fragment emission (Z{gt}2) has been studied in the reactions of 50, 80, and 100 MeV/u {sup 139}La + {sup 12}C, and 80 MeV/u {sup 139}La + {sup 27}Al, {sup nat}Cu, and {sup 197}Au. Charge, angle, and energy distributions were measured inclusively and in coincidence with other complex fragments, and were used to extract the source rapidities, velocity distributions, and cross sections. The experimental emission velocity distributions, charge loss distributions, and cross sections have bee… more

The end of incomplete fusion and the decoupling of the fireball as seen from complex fragment emission

Description: The incomplete fusion process is affected by the entrance channel asymmetry as well as by the bombarding energy. In the first part of the paper, the role of entrance channel mass asymmetry is explored by characterizing the resulting complex fragment sources in terms of their velocity, charge and excitation energy. In the second part evidence is given about the possible demise of incomplete fusion and the onset of the fireball regime from the anomalous charge and angular distributions of the emi… more

Design of the Atlas 240 kV Marx modules

Description: A prototype 240 kV, oil-insulated Marx module has been designed and constructed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The prototype will be used for testing and certifying the design of the Marx module and certain components, including the closing switches, series resistor, and the capacitors themselves. The prototype will also be used to evaluate proposed mechanical systems designs. Information gained from the construction and testing of the 4-capacitor prototype will be folded into th… more

Results of the remote sensing feasibility study for the uranium hexafluoride storage cylinder yard program

Description: The US DOE manages the safe storage of approximately 650,000 tons of depleted uranium hexafluoride remaining from the Cold War. This slightly radioactive, but chemically active, material is contained in more than 46,000 steel storage cylinders that are located at Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Paducah, Kentucky; and Portsmouth, Ohio. Some of the cylinders are more than 40 years old, and approximately 17,500 are considered problem cylinders because their physical integrity is questionable. These cylinder… more

First reliability test of a surface micromachined microengine using SHiMMeR

Description: The first-ever reliability stress test on surface micromachined microengines developed at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) has been completed. We stressed 41 microengines at 36,000 RPM and inspected the functionality at 60 RPM. We have observed an infant mortality region, a region of low failure rate (useful life), and no signs of wearout in the data. The reliability data are presented and interpreted using standard reliability methods. Failure analysis results on the stressed microengines ar… more

Design and characterization of microscale heater structures for test die and sensor applications

Description: The authors describe a class of microscale heaters fabricated with CMOS processes on silicon wafers. These heaters were designed to produce localized high temperatures above 400 C for test and sensor applications. The temperature levels produced for various input powers and the thermal profiles surrounding the heater for packaged and wafer-level heater structures were studied to guide the placement of microelectronics integrated with the heater structures on the same die. To show the performanc… more

Description: This paper presents the preliminary electrical and mechanical design of the Atlas machine`s 1.8 megajoule, 600 kV Marx modules. The modules are implemented with plastic cased capacitors similar to those developed for the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) ACE II and ACE IV machines. The double ended electrode capacitor style has been dubbed ``FASTCAP.`` Electrodes are provided for mounting rail-gaps on one side and flat plate transmission line damping resistors on the other. This provides for an extr… more

Atlas chamber, power flow channel, and diagnostic interface design

Description: The Atlas pulsed-power machine, presently being designed at Los Alamos, will deliver a pulse of {approximately} 45 MA, in 4--5 {micro}sec, with energies of up to 6 MJ (from a bank of 36 MJ maximum) to a load assembly, located in vacuum. Design considerations for the vacuum vessel, power flow channel from the vessel inward, are presented. In contrast to Sandia`s PBFA II-Z, where 20 MA currents and 2--2.5 MJ of energy are delivered to ({approximately} 15 mg) loads in {approximately} 100 nsec, the… more
