Climate selection and development of climate indicators

Description: A climate analysis procedure for selecting climate locations which would represent the variation in climate conditions throughout the United States is documented. Separate energy analysis projects for three building categories were to use the results of the climate location project. The categories are: commercial buildings (including multifamily residences), single family residences, and mobile homes. The overall objectives, approach, and method used for all three categories are presented, then… more

Fabrication and characterization of MCC (Materials Characterization Center) approved testing material: ATM-10 glass

Description: The Materials Characterization Center ATM-10 glass represents a reference commercial high-level waste form similar to that which will be produced by the West Valley Nuclear Service Co. Inc., West Valley, New York. The target composition and acceptable range of composition were defined by the sponsor, West Valley Nuclear Service. The ATM-10 glass was produced in accordance with the Pacific Northwest Laboratory QA Manual for License-Related Programs, MCC technical procedures, and MCC QA Plan that… more

Fabrication and characterization of MCC approved testing material: ATM-WV/205 glass

Description: The ATM-WV/205 glass was produced in accordance with PNL's QA Manual for License-Related Programs, MCC technical procedures, and MCC QA Plan that were in effect during the course of this work. The method and procedure to be used in the fabrication and characterization of the ATM-WV/205 glass were specified in two run plans for glass preparation and a characterization plan. The ATM-WV/205 glass meets all specifications. The elemental composition and oxidation state of the glass are within the sp… more

Sampling Design for the 1980 Commercial and Multifamily Residential Building Survey

Description: Details of a proposed sample design for the 1980 Commercial and Multifamily Building Energy Performance Survey are presented. The objective of the survey is to assess the extent to which new building design practices comply with the proposed 1980 Energy Budget Levels for Commercial and Multifamily Residential Building Designs (DEB/sub 80/). The procedure will be to: identify a small number of building types which account for the majority of commercial buildings constructed in the U.S.A.; conduc… more

Validation status of the VARGOW oil reservoir model

Description: VARGOW, a variable gas-oil-water reservoir model, provides recovery estimates suitable for assessing various reservoir production policies and regulations. Data were collected for a number of reservoirs. From this data base, three reservoirs approximating the model assumptions were selected for model testing purposes. For all three reservoirs, it has been possible to simulate the observed pressures in both interpolative and extrapolative modes. Simulating the gas/oil ratio (GOR) has not been as… more

Evaluation of Simultaneous Testing Procedures for Nuclear Materials Control and Accounting

Description: This report presents the results of a comparative evaluation of four statistical testing procedures for use in the control and accounting of special nuclear materials. Of primary interest is a bivariate procedure that simultaneously tests ID and CID. Descriptions of the four testing procedures are presented with the necessary formulas and special considerations for their implementation. Results of a simulation study indicate the conditions under which each of the tests would provide superior pr… more

Double shell slurry low-temperature corrosion tests

Description: A series of year-long tests have been completed on potential double shell slurry (DSS) compositions at temperatures up to 100/sup 0/C. These tests have sought data on uniform corrosion, pitting, and stress-corrosion cracking. No indication of the latter two types of corrosion were observed within the test matrix. Corrosion rates after four months were generally below the 1 mpy (25 ..mu..m/y) design limit. By the end of twelve months all results were below this limit and, except for very concent… more

Variability in properties of grouted Phosphate/Sulfate N-Reactor Waste

Description: A Transportable Grout Facility (TGF) is being constructed at the Hanford site in Washington State to convert various low-level liquid wastes to a grout waste form for onsite disposal. The TGF Project is managed by Rockwell Hanford Operations (Rockwell). Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has provided a grout formulation for Phosphate/Sulfate N-Reactor Waste, the first waste stream scheduled for grouting beginning in late 1987. The formulation includes a blend of portland cement, fly ash, atta… more

Prediction equations for corrosion rates of a A-537 and A-516 steels in Double Shell Slurry, Future PUREX, and Hanford Facilities Wastes

Description: Even though the interest in the corrosion of radwaste tanks goes back to the mid-1940's when waste storage was begun, and a fair amount of corrosion work has been done since then, the changes in processes and waste types have outpaced the development of new data pertinent to the new double shell tanks. As a consequence, Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) began a development of corrosion data on a broad base of waste compositions in 1980. The objective of the program was to provide operations pe… more

West Valley high-level nuclear waste glass development: a statistically designed mixture study

Description: The first full-scale conversion of high-level commercial nuclear wastes to glass in the United States will be conducted at West Valley, New York, by West Valley Nuclear Services Company, Inc. (WVNS), for the US Department of Energy. Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) is supporting WVNS in the design of the glass-making process and the chemical formulation of the glass. This report describes the statistically designed study performed by PNL to develop the glass composition recommended for use at… more
