Development of a solar thermal receiver for high temperature applications

Description: A thermal receiver for point focus collectors is being constructed. Its design, which is based upon experience with a commercial receiver, employs the advantages of that receiver and improves some of its features. The new receiver uses as a buffer between the cavity surface and the heat transfer fluid a thermal mass, which with a very small temperature drop penalty smooths the flux distribution to eliminate hot spots. Maximum operating temperature range was extended from 620/sup 0/C to 870/sup … more

Omnium-G parabolic dish optical efficiency: a comparison of two independent measurement techniques

Description: Measurements made at SERI of the optical efficiency of the Omnium-G parabolic dish concentrator are described. Two independent techniques were used: the cold-water calorimeter method and the heat of fusion method. Results from both techniques agree quite well and indicate that the optical efficiency for a 10-cm receiver aperture is 25%. Optical efficiency measured in early 1979 was 37%, and in mid 1979 it had degraded to 21%. An optical alignment procedure is described that resulted in the incr… more

Conceptual foundation of the Fokker-Planck approach to space-charge effects

Description: An rms-mismatched beam can evolve rapidly to a configuration of quasiequilibrium under the influence of space-charge forces. As sit evolves, its emittance grows and a diffuse halo forms. The beam`s distribution function accounts for all the complicated dynamics. Unfortunately, the distribution function is difficult to calculate inasmuch as the physics lies at the interface between classical mechanics and thermodynamics. This paper presents the foundation for a statistical theory of the dynamics… more

Thermoelectric Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion

Description: A novel thermoelectric OTEC concept is proposed and compared with the ammonia closed-cycle designs. The thermoelectric OTEC is a much simpler system which uses no working fluid and therefore requires no pressure vessel, working fluid pumps, or turbogenerator. These components are replaced by power modules which are heat exchangers integrated with thermoelectric generators. The thermoelectric OTEC offers several potential advantages including: simpler and more easily mass-produced components; hi… more

Critical magnetic scattering from the Heisenberg ferromagnet EuS

Description: The paramagnetic scattering from the insulating, isotropic ferromagnet EuS is investigated at T/sub c/ along the (111) direction by means of inelastic neutron scattering. The energy width of the quasielastic scattering is proportional to q/sup z/ with z = 2.54 +- 0.10, in good agreement with the predictions of dynamical scaling theory (z = 2.5). z is, however, significantly larger than the value deduced from measurements along the (100) direction (z = 2.2). Near the zone boundary the magnetic s… more
