Kinetics of silica deposition from simulated geothermal brines

Description: Supersaturated brines were passed through columns packed with several forms of silica (crystalline ..cap alpha.. quartz, polycrystalline ..cap alpha.. quartz, and porous Vycor). Also, silica deposition on ThO/sub 2/ microspheres and titanium powder was studied under controlled conditions of supersaturation, pH, temperature, and salinity. The residence time was varied by adjustments of flow rate and column length. The silica contents of the input and effluent solutions were determined colorimetr… more

Precipitation and scaling in dynamic geothermal systems. [Titanium loop facility]

Description: A dynamic loop facility for studying scaling in simulated geothermal brines--under conditions such as will be encountered in engineering scale heat transfer equipment is being constructed. The first phase of the program consists of two principal efforts: (1) modification of an existing 100 gpm titanium loop to provide the engineering scaling test facility and (2) operation of an approximately 1 gph once-through (experimental) system to provide design data for titanium loop modifications to prov… more

Precipitation and scaling in dynamic geothermal systems. Progress report ending December 31, 1976. [Ti loop facility]

Description: Major additions and modifications to a titanium loop system for conversion to the study of the formation of silica from simulated geothermal brine were completed. Preliminary pressure and temperature testing with water up to 1000 psig and 200/sup 0/C, respectively, indicated general operability of the system. A 0.5- to 1.5-gpm side-stream was monitored and cooled under controlled conditions from 190/sup 0/C to 50/sup 0/C in a five-section double-tube bypass heat exchanger, then reheated and rec… more

Silica precipitation and scaling in a dynamic loop system. [Design and testing of titanium corrosion test loop]

Description: A titanium corrosion test loop was modified to provide a dynamic facility for studying the formation of silica precipitates and scale from simulated geothermal brines as a function of composition, temperature, and flow conditions. A schematic of the modified loop system is presented. The principal components and connecting piping are all constructed of commercially pure titanium. These components include a centrifugal pump, silica saturator column, segmented heat exchanger, reheat heat exchange… more

Silica scaling in simulated geothermal brines

Description: A 6.3 1/sec (100 GPM) titanium corrosion test loop was modified to provide a dynamic facility for studying the formation of silica deposits, their properties and fates, as a function of brine composition, temperature, and flow conditions. Scale formation was studied in a segmented heat exchanger operating under realistic conditions; the segmented design permitted examination of scale formations in five temperature regimes. The program was terminated after minimal exploratory operation because o… more

Silica Precipitation and Scaling in Dynamic Geothermal Systems

Description: The authors are modifying an existing 100 gpm titanium loop to provide a facility for studying the formation of silica precipitates, their properties and fates, principally as a function of brine composition, temperature, and flow conditions. This loop demonstrated excellent serviceability over a period of years in saline water corrosion studies (to 275 C and 2 M NaCl), with and without pollutant additives such as H{sub 2}S, NH{sub 3}, and SO{sub 2}, and should be equally useful in this applica… more

In-Pile Corrosion Test Loops for Aqueous Homogeneous Reactor Solutions

Description: An in-pile corrosion test loop is described which is used to study the effect of reactor radiation on the corrosion of materials of construction and the chemical stability of fuel solutions of interest to the Aqueous Homogeneous Reactor Program at ORNL. Aqueous solutions of uranyl sulfate are circulated in the loop by means of a 5-gpm canned-rotor pump, and the pump loop is designed for operation at temperatures to 300 ts C and pressures to 2000 psia while exposed to reactor radiation in beam-h… more

Fission product behavior in the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment

Description: Essentially all the fission product data for numerous and varied samples taken during operation of the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment or as part of the examination of specimens removed after particular phases of operation are reported, together with the appropriate inventory or other basis of comparison, and relevant reactor parameters and conditions. Fission product behavior fell into distinct chemical groups. Evidence for fission product behavior during operation over a period of 26 months wi… more

Stress-Corrosion Cracking Problems in the Homogeneous Reactor Test

Description: Chloride-induced stress-corrosion cracking has been encountered in the Homogeneous Reactor Test during the preliminary testing. The rector is constructed of austenitic stainless steels. It is unique in that it will operate at 250 to 300 C with an aqueous uranyl sulfate solution fuel containing 200 to 500 ppm of dissolved oxygen. The cracking has occurred in a secondary system used for detecting leaks in the flanged joints of the primary systems and in the grooves of flanges in the primary syste… more

Homogeneous Reactor Project Quarterly Progress Report: November 1959-January 1960

Description: From Summary: "The major objective of the run was the investigation of fuel stability. The reactor operated for long periods at the design power of 5 Mw with none of the usual indications of instability while the system pressure was kept at 1250 psig. Run 21 ended on January 22, so that the reason for an abrupt change in the mixing rate of fuel between the core and blanket could be investigated and a reactor steam-system valve could be repaired."

Description: The reactor equipment cell is expected to be completed by February 15. While filled with water, the tank was inspected for leaks, and the few leaks found will have been repaired by February 15. All orders for construction materials placed prior to this quarter have been received. New requisitions issued during the quarter total $16,000. Work orders were issued, and fabrication of all low-pressure-system components was begun in the ORNL shops. The thermal shield around the reactor vessel was spe… more
