Conceptual design of a heat pipe radiator

Description: A conceptual design of a waste heat radiator has been developed for a thermoelectric space nuclear power system. The basic shape of the heat pipe radiator was a frustum of a right circular cone. The design included stringer heat pipes to carry reject heat from the thermoelectric modules to the radiator skin that was composed of small-diameter, thin-walled cross heat pipes. The stringer heat pipes were armored to resist puncture by a meteoroid. The cross heat pipes were designed to provide the n… more

Pyrographite Water-Cooled Target Analysis

Description: This report presents a study of two pyrographic water-cooled targets planned for use in the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility. A steady-state thermal stress analysis was done that included a parameter study on the physical and numerical variables that affect the problem. The maximum target temperatures and stresses were calculated and compared for a variety of conditions. The comparisons show that the 0.6-cm half-width fin target proposed for the A-2 line is the most vulnerable of the … more

Active Cooling for Downhole Instrumentation: Preliminary Analysis and System Selection

Description: A feasibility study and a series of preliminary designs and analyses were done to identify candidate processes or cycles for use in active cooling systems for downhole electronic instruments. A matrix of energy types and their possible combinations was developed and the energy conversion process for each pari was identified. The feasibility study revealed conventional as well as unconventional processes and possible refrigerants and identified parameters needing further clarifications. A concep… more

Active Cooling for Downhole Instrumentation: Design Criteria and Conceptual Design Summary

Description: This report summarizes the results of a literature survey that describes successful tests of geophysical instruments and their thermal protection systems. The conditions to which an instrument is subjected are formulated into relevant thermal and mechanical design criteria that have proved useful for improving passive thermal protection systems and selecting the preliminary feasibility of active refrigeration systems. A brief summary of the results of a series of conceptual designs on seven dif… more

Thermal Design for Protection of Downhole Electronic Packages

Description: Design improvements made for downhole tools based on results obtained from the thermal analysis of the instrument package are described. Results include heat flux at the tool surface and temperature-time histories of each subsystem. The research stems from a need for tools that can survive the harsh environment present in geothermal wellbores. The high temperatures and pressures create stress on the tools that function in this environment. Improvements in the design of downhole tools lead to mo… more

Analysis and Thermal-Design Improvements of Downhole Tools for Use in Hot-Dry Wells

Description: Design improvements made for downhole thermal protection of systems based on results obtained from the analysis of the electronics, heat sink, and dewar packaged in a steel tubular body are described. Results include heat flux at the tool surface, temperature-time histories of each subsystem and isotherm contour plots during the simulation. The analysis showed that the thermal potential between the electronics and the heat sink was in the wrong direction and also was too small to remove heat en… more

Compact acoustic refrigerator

Description: This invention is comprised of a compact acoustic refrigeration system that actively cools components, e.g., electrical circuits, in a borehole environment. An acoustic engine includes first thermodynamic elements for generating a standing acoustic wave in a selected medium. An acoustic refrigerator includes second thermodynamic elements located in the standing wave for generating a relatively cold temperature at a first end of the second thermodynamic elements and a relatively hot temperature … more

Selection of Power Plant Elements for Future Reactor Space Electric Power Systems

Description: Various types of reactor designs, electric power conversion equipment, and reject-heat systems to be used in nuclear reactor power plants for future space missions were studied. The designs included gas-cooled, liquid-cooled, and heat-pipe reactors. For the power converters, passive types such as thermoelectric and thermionic converters and dynamic types such as Brayton, potassium Rankine, and Stirling cycles were considered. For the radiators, heat pipes for transfer and radiating surface, pum… more

In situ mechanical-radiation effects test capsule for simulating fusion material environments

Description: Conditions of radiation and simultaneous cyclic stress on materials are inherent in advanced energy source designs such as inertially and magnetically confined controlled thermonuclear reactors. A test capsule capable of applying a cyclic stress to test specimens while they are being irradiated in the 800-MeV proton beam at the Clinton P. Anderson Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility has been developed. The design and performance of this device are discussed in this report. This machine has facili… more

Ventilation systems analysis during tornado conditions. Progress report, July--December 1975. [Depressurization effects]

Description: A review of some existing digital simulations of fluid systems, a brief description of the proposed generalized computer code, a description of, and results from, two solution techniques, and a sample test case ventilation system are presented. The review of some fluid system simulations covers methods and techniques for development of a more general digital solution technique than the successive substitution method used in previous analyses. The structure and organization of the computer code … more

Analytical and Numerical Solution of One- and Two-Dimensional Steady Heat Transfer in a Coldplate

Description: We develop analytical models for steady-state, one- and two-dimensional heat transfer in a single-material, flat-plate coldplate. Discrete heat sources are mounted on one side of the plate and heat transfer to a flowing fluid occurs on the other. The models are validated numerically using finite differences. We propose a simple procedure for estimating maximum coldplate temperature at the location of each heat source which includes thermal interaction among the sources. Results from one model a… more

Ventilation systems analysis during tornado conditions. Progress report, January--June 1975

Description: The principal concern of this investigation is to develop the capability to simulate the dynamic effects of a tornado depressurization on a ventilation system. The basic formulation and solution of the two-zone series model ventilation subsystem is based on lumped parameter component response equations, the isothermal compression of air, and the conservation of mass. Solutions based on these assumptions are also presented for the two-zone series model with natural bypass, the two-zone series mo… more
