THE SOLID SOLUBILITY AND CONSTITUTION OF YTTRIUM IN IRON-20 TO 40 w/o CHROMIUM ALLOYS

Description: The solid solubility of yttrium in iron-20 to 40 wt.% chromium alloys was determined by metallographic techniques and found to be extremely small. At 1320 deg C, the maximum solubility is about 0.12 wt. a yttrium. Study of iron- rich alloys of the iron-yttrium system shows that the compound YFe/sub 5/ exists. A eutectic occurs between iron and YFe/sub 5/ at 1257 deg C. The constitution of iron - 20 to 40 wt.% chromium-yttrium alloys ccntaining less than 6 wt.% yttrium was studied between 1250 a… more

Development of Thorium-Uranium-Base Fuel Alloys

Description: Thorium-uranium alloys were studied with the aim of developing alloys with improved irradiation behavior by control of microstructure. The effect of thorium purity, melting technique, hot and cold working, and heat treatment on microstructure was investigated. The most signifi- . cant microstructural differences occurred as a result of casting technique, The arc-melted alloys exhibited the most nearly ideal structure, that of a homogeneous dispersion of small-diameter uranium particles in a tho… more

Grain Refinement of the As-Cast Uranium-5 w/o Chromium Alloy by Heat Treatment

Description: Introduction: "The uranium-5 w/o chromium alloy has been intensively investigated for use in a power reactor in the as-cast condition. However, when cast sample fuel elements were subjected to irradiation, their stability was found to be unsatisfactory. In order to improve the behavior of the alloy, a program of grain refinement by heat treatment was begun. The effect of chill casting on the heat-treated grain size was also investigated."

Low-Melting Alloys for Cast Fuel Elements

Description: The following report follows an investigation made to determine the composition of uranium-rich ternary eutectic alloys most suitable for reactor application in the as-cast condition. These determinations were made based metallographic examination and thermal analysis of as-cast alloys.

Stress-Strain Properties of Irradiated Uranium-10 w/o Molybdenum

Description: The stress-strain properties of the APDA reference alloy of uranium- 10 wt.% molybdenum at various burnups up to 2.1 total at. % are described. Data were ob tained on both irradiated and unirradiated specimens of the alloy by the use of a remotely operated bend-testing machine. Tensile properties of unirradiated material are also reported for comparison with data obtained from the bend tests. The mathematical procedure used in obtainirg equivalent uniaxial stress-strain properties from the bend… more

Development of Niobium-Uranium Alloys for Elevated-Temperature Fuel Applications

Description: As a continuation of studies reported in BMI-1400, fabrication characteristics, physical and mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior in NaK, sodium, and water of niobium--uranium binary alloys containing up to 60 wt.% uranium were investigated. Alloys were cast by a skull melting and consumable and nonconsumable arc-melting methods. Fabrication difficulties with alloys containing greater than 25 wt.% uranium were related to coring-type microsegregation during casting. Tensile tests indica… more

The Stability and Existence Range of the Zirconium-Uranium Epsilon Phase

Description: Report discussing studies regarding properties of the zirconium-uranium epsilon phase related to stability and existence range. Data showing this phase's thermodynamic stability is presented as well as the zirconium-uranium constitutional diagram. Oxygen and nitrogen effects on zirconium-uranium alloys and epsilon-phase alloys is included as well as ternary zirconium-uranium-oxygen diagrams.

Grain Refinement of the As-Cast Uranium-5 w/o Chromium Alloy by Ternary Additions

Description: Abstract: "Refinement of grain size of the base uranium-chromium eutectic alloy (uranium-5 w/o chromium) by ternary additions is discussed. Thirteen additions to the base alloy were investigated, and three additions were found to exhibit worthwhile grain-refinement tendencies. The three alloys, uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w.o molybdenum, uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w/o germanium, and uranium-5 w/o chromium-0.2 w/o niobium, were heat treated to produce final grain-size structures of between 0.015 … more

A Study of the Tensile Fracture and Microstructure of Uranium

Description: Tensile tests and exhaustive metallographic examinations were conducted in an effort to relate the mechanical proper ties, the chemical compositions, and the structures of five grades of Savannah River Laboratory uranium to their irradiation stability. Subsequent tensile tests were conducted on seven types of National Lead (Ohio) uranium containing various levels of iron, aluminum, and silicon. Special attention was devoted to the mode of fracture exhibited by the various materials and to the e… more
