Interface modification during oxidation of a glass-ceramic matrix/SiC fibre composite

Description: Oxidation heat treatments between 375{degrees}C and 600{degrees}C for 100 hours in air, have been performed on the calcium aluminosilicate glass-ceramic matrix/SiC fibre reinforced composite CAS/Nicalon (manufactured by Coming, USA). Using a commercial nano-indentation system to perform fibre push-down tests, the fibre-matrix interfacial debond fracture surface energy (G{sub i}) and frictional shear stress ({tau}) have been determined. Modification of interface properties, compared to the as fabricated material, was observed at heat treatment temperatures as low as 375{degrees}C, where a significant drop in G{sub i} and an increase in {tau} were recorded. With 450{degrees}C, 525{degrees}C and 600{degrees}C heat treatments, an increase in G{sub i} but a dramatic increase in {tau} were recorded. Under four-point flexure testing, the as fabricated and the 375{degrees}C heat treated materials displayed tough, composite behaviour with extensive fibre pull out, but at {le}450{degrees}C, brittle failure with minimal fibre pull out, was observed. This transition from tough mechanical response to one of brittleness is due to the large increase in {tau} reducing fibre pull out to a minimum and therefore reducing the total required work of fracture. The large increases in {tau} and G{sub i} have been attributed to the oxidative removal of the lubricating, carbon interface and the compressive residual stresses across the interface.

Experimentally determined volumetric properties of CO{sub 2} + CH{sub 4} + N{sub 2} mixtures at 20-100 MPa and 323-573 K. Chapter 3

Description: The densities of C0{sub 2}+CH{sub 4}+N{sub 2} mixtures were measured at 20--100 MPa, 323--573 K using a custom-designed high-pressure, high-temperature vibrating-tube densimeter. Molar volumes and excess molar volumes (V{sub m}{sup E}) were calculated from the experimental data. Although (V{sub m}{sup E}) is generally positive, negative deviations are observed in ternary mixtures with compositions close to those of binary mixtures that exhibit negative deviations. (V{sub m}{sup E}) generally decreases as pressure increases from 20 to 100 MPa. As temperature increases, (V{sub m}{sup E}) increases until it reaches a maximum around 473 K, and then it decreases moderately as temperature is further increased. (V{sub m}{sup E}) is typically between 0 and 4 per cent of the total volume of the mixture. Predictions of (V{sub m}{sup E}) for ternary mixtures may be made from experimental data for the binary subsystems. Comparison with experimental data indicates that these methods are reasonably accurate for predicting the volumetric properties of ternary gas mixtures.

Development of remedial process options: Phase II, Feasibility study: Installation Restoration Program, Naval Air Station Fallon, Fallon, Nevada

Description: This technical memorandum develops process options which are appropriate for environmental restoration activities at Naval Air Station Fallon (NAS Fallon), Nevada. Introduction of contaminants to the environment has resulted from deliberate disposal activities (both through dumping and landfilling) and accidental spills and leaks associated with normal activities at NAS Fallon over its lifetime of operation. Environmental sampling results indicate that the vast majority of contaminants of concern are petroleum hydrocarbon related. These contaminants include JP-4, JP-5, leaded and unleaded gasoline, waste oils and lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and numerous solvents and cleaners. The principal exposure pathways of concern associated with NAS Fallon contaminants appear to be the surface flows and shallow drainage systems to which the base contributes. Available data indicate NAS Fallon IR Program sites are not contributing excessive contamination to surface flows emanating from the base. Contaminants appear to be contained in a relatively immobile state in the shallow subsurface with little or no contaminant migration off site.

Preliminary site characterization summary and engineering evaluation/cost analysis for Site 2, New Fuel Farm, Naval Air Station Fallon, Fallon, Nevada

Description: This report addresses subsurface contamination associated with Site 2, the New Fuel Farm at Naval Air Station Fallon (NAS Fallon), Nevada and is an integral part of Phase 2 of the Installation Restoration Program (IR Program) currently underway at the facility. This report: (1) reviews and assesses environmental information characterizing Site 2; (2) determine if site-characterization information is sufficient to design and evaluate removal actions; and, (3) investigates, develops, and describes any removal actions deemed feasible. Previous environmental investigations at Site 2 indicate the presence of floating product (primarily JP-5, jet fuel) on the water table underlying the facility. While the extent of floating-produce plumes has been characterized, the degree of associated soil and groundwater contamination remains uncertain. A comprehensive characterization of soil and groundwater contamination will be completed as the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study progresses. Corrective actions are recommended at this time to remove free-phase floating product. Implementing these removal actions will also provide additional information which will be used to direct further investigations of the extent, mobility, and potential environmental threat from soil and groundwater contaminants at this side.

Shake table testing of structural clay tile infilled frames

Description: Two steel frames with structural clay tile infills were tested under simulated seismic loads in both the out-of-plane and in-plane direction. Out-of-plane testing showed that infill panels separate from their bounding frame, and respond at their own natural frequency during a seismic excitation. Due to arching, the panels remain stable. In-plane seismic testing showed similar behavior patterns to previous static testing. The natural frequency was adequately predicted using a piecewise linear equivalent strut analytical method. The structure was then subjected to over one thousand cycles of loading using a sine sweep before failure.

Enhanced diffusion of dopants in vacancy supersaturation produced by MeV implantation

Description: The diffusion of Sb and B markers has been studied in vacancy supersaturations produced by MeV Si implantation in float zone (FZ) silicon and bonded etch-back silicon-on-insulator (BESOI) substrates. MeV Si implantation produces a vacancy supersaturated near-surface region and an interstitial-rich region at the projected ion range. Transient enhanced diffusion (TED) of Sb in the near surface layer was observed as a result of a 2 MeV Si{sup +}, 1 {times} 10{sup 16}/cm{sup 2}, implant. A 4{times} larger TED of Sb was observed in BESOI than in FZ silicon, demonstrating that the vacancy supersaturation persists longer in BESOI than in FZ. B markers in samples with MeV Si implant showed a factor of 10{times} smaller diffusion relative to markers without the MeV Si{sup +} implant. This data demonstrates that a 2 MeV Si{sup +} implant injects vacancies into the near surface region.

Volumetric properties of CO{sub 2}-CH{sub 4}-N{sub 2} fluids at 200{degree}C and 1000 bars: A comparison of equations of state and experimental data. Chapter 4

Description: Predictions of molar volume, excess molar volume, and isochoric P-T trajectories from 13 published equations of state are compared with one another and with preliminary volumetric data for CO{sub 2}-CH{sub 4}-N{sub 2} fluids at 200{degrees}C and 1000 bars. The equations of state investigated represent a wide variety of empirical and semi-empirical approaches to the modeling of fluids. The experimental data indicate that excess volumes of CO{sub 2}-CH{sub 4}-N{sub 2} mixtures are small (<3% of the total volume of the mixture, except near the critical point of CO{sub 2}). The NIST software package DDMIX yields volumetric properties that are most consistent with our experimental results. Differences in the calculated volumetric properties of mixtures from the different equations of state are significant For example, estimates of the equilibrium trapping temperature of a fluid inclusion (2000 bars, 60% CO{sub 2}-20% CH{sub 4}20% N{sub 2}mixture, V=59.10 cm{sup 3}/mole) calculated from various equations of state range from 462-570{degrees}C. The major source of error in calculated volumetric properties of fluid mixtures is the inability of equations of state to accurately predict the volumetric properties of the pure components.

Environmental Restoration and Waste Management manpower needs assessment: US Department of Energy complex

Description: A study was conducted Pacific Northwest Laboratory and Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Inc. to assess the supply and demand for 53 scientific, engineering, and technical occupations relevant to the US Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Environmental Restoration and Waste management (EM). These assessments were made by examining budget projections and the input of program/project and human resources managers throughout the DOE complex. Quantitative projections of full-time equivalent employees slots for each occupation have been developed for the 1993--1997 time frame. Qualitative assessments of the factors that affect recruitment, staffing, and retention are also reported. The implications of the study are discussed within the likely skills mix of the future workforce and the education and organization interventions most likely to address the needs of the DOE complex.

Bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil on Kwajalein Island: Microbiological characterization and biotreatability studies

Description: Bioremediation technology is being evaluated for use on the Kwajalein Atoll, which is located in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The study was undertaken by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on behalf of the US Army Kwajalein Atoll (USAKA). During February of 1991, a team from ORNL and The University of Tennessee (UT) visited the USAKA. In addition to making on-site observations regarding microbial abundance and distribution of petroleum contaminants, they brought back to Oak Ridge various soil and water samples for detailed analyses. This report documents the biological studies of these samples and presents observations made during the period from February to April of 1991 by investigators at ORNL, UT, and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

An investigation of the sensitization behavior of Fe-Mn-Cr austenitic steels

Description: Standard chemical immersion (modified Strauss) tests and analytical electron microscopy (AEM) showed that reduced activation austenitic steels based on Fe-20Mn-12Cr-0.25C (wt %) are extremely prone to thermal sensitization and intergranular corrosion because of their high carbon contents and low chromium concentrations. This susceptibility to sensitization after thermal aging, fabrication, or irradiation makes their use in aqueous and other certain environments problematical. Excellent correlation between intergranular corrosion induced by immersion in the acidified CuSO{sub 4} solution and the presence of narrow chromium-depleted zones around grain boundaries, as determined by AEM, was found. Due to the need to meet reduced activation requirements, the opportunities to increase the sensitization of fully austenitic Fe-Mn-Cr steels by alloy design are limited. 10 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

The fate of radionuclides in sewage sludge applied to land

Description: Municipal sewage sludge containing up to 12 pCi/g {sup 137}Cs, 20 pCi/g {sup 60}Co, and 300 ppm U was injected in a pasture (43 Mg/ha) and sprayed over a young pine plantation (34 Mg/ha). In the pasture, radionuclides were largely retained in the upper 15 cm of the soil, and only about 15% moved below 15 cm. Sludge rapidly infiltrated the soil on the pine plantation. One year after application, at least 85% of the {sup 137}Cs, {sup 60}Co, and U were found in the upper 7 cm of the pine plantation, with only about 15% moving into the 7- to 15-cm strata. On-site total added radiation dose was 2 to 6 mrem/year. Radionuclides were not detected above background in soil solutions at {approximately}50 cm depth or in shallow down-gradient groundwater wells. Surface runoff from application areas did not have elevated radionuclide concentrations. Concentrations of these radionuclides increased slightly in vegetation on treated sites, and uranium was notably higher in earthworms. 9 refs., 2 tabs.
