Domain and Surface Structures of Sodium Tungsten Bronzes, NaxWO₃ (0.4 [x [1)

Description: The domain and surface structures of metallic sodium tungsten bronzes, NaxWO₃, 0.4 < x < 1, were studied using optical microscopy, supplemented by chemical methods, photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, etc. The birefringent, multidomain structure of the bronze is exhibited by a sodium-deficient, epitaxial surface film and hence is not, as reported elsewhere, a bulk property. The film can be synthesized by anodic electrolysis in alkaline solution and can exist only epitaxially with t… more

Di-n-Amyl-n-Amylphosphonate and Tricaprylmethylammonium Nitrate as Potential Extractants for Reprocessing Th-U Fuels

Description: Both 2F di-n-amyl-n-amylphosphonate in n-dodecane (DA(AP)-DD) and 0.77F tricaprylmethylammonium nitrate in Aromatic 100 (TCMA.NO/sub 3/-AR100) extract uranium and thorium into relatively concentrated organic solutions. Countercurrent-flow tests with each extractant have demonstrated effective uranium-thorium separations by selective stripping from the organic phase. Both extractants offer advantageous alternatives to tributylphosphate (Thorex) in reprocessing irradiated mixed ThO2-UO2 fuels. Fo… more

A Computer Program for the Kinetic Treatment of Radiation-Induced Simultaneous Chemical Reactions

Description: "WR16, a program written in 3600-FORTRAN for a CDC-3600 digital computer, calculates, as a function of time, the concentrations of all the species taking part in the simultaneous first- and second-order chemical reactions occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiations occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiation of any chemical system (for example, an aqueous solution). Homogeneous reaction kinetics is assumed for the computation. The variation of electrical conductivit… more

Energy Level Structure and Transition Probabilities in the Spectra of the Trivalent Lanthanides in LaF₃

Description: Two types of correlations with experimental results are reported. For even-f-electron systems, a center of gravity was computed based on the energies of the observed states, and calculated optimized sets of atomic energy level parameters. For odd-electron systems complete crystal field calculations were performed in which parameters of both the atomic and crystal-field parts of the interaction were adjusted to experimental data. The result is a set of eigenvectors for all the ionic states in ea… more

HYCSOS : A Chemical Heat Pump and Energy Conversion System Based on Metal Hydrides

Description: The current status of the HYCSOS chemical heat pump and energy conversion system based on metal hydrides is described. Heat transfer fluid loops were insulated and modified for isothermal operation. Software development for HYCSOS manual mode operation was completed. Routines to handle data acquisition, logging, compression, correction and plotting, using a Tektronix Graphics system with flexible disk data storage, provide a rapid and versatile means of presenting HYCSOS data for analysis. Adva… more

Branching Fraction in the Radioactive Decay of ⁸⁵mKr

Description: The branching fraction in the decay of the fission product ⁸⁵m-krypton⁸⁵m to the ground state ⁸⁵krypton (10.75 y) was measured relative to the total decay to both ⁸⁵krypton and ⁸⁵Rb. Samples of uranium-235 were highly irradiated in a high-flux reactor and dissolved. ⁸⁵Rb was measured by isotope-dilution mass spectrometry, and the ⁸⁵krypton was counted in GM tubes the counting efficiencies of which were calibrated with a standardized ⁸⁵krypton gas of known disintegration rate. The branching frac… more
