Diffractive hadronic production of D mesons

Description: A search for charmed D mesons was made with a 217 GeV ..pi../sup -/ beam on a liquid hydrogen target. The Chicago Cyclotron Spectrometer at Fermilab was used to analyze the hadronic decay of a D meson in coincidence with a prompt muon and a recoil proton. A total of 50 +- 12 D/sup + -/ events were observed with equal numbers in the two channels K/sup + -/..pi../sup - +/..pi../sup - +/. Some of the cuts selected diffractive events. When these cuts were removed the signal remained the same, although the background was greatly increased. The Feynman X and angular distributions were consistent with diffractive production. A diffractive model yielded a cross section of (6 to 10) +- 4 ..mu..b.

Experimental search for W/Z pairs and Higgs bosons at very high energy hadron-hadron colliders

Description: We study, from an experimental point of view, the main ways to detect standard high mass Higgs bosons (from 300 GeV up to about 1 TeV) when they decay into W- and Z-pairs at the SSC. We also consider the corresponding W- and Z/sup 0/-pair continuum which may itself provide interesting physics, and we pay some attention to the case of an intermediate mass charged Higgs decaying into tau..nu../sub tau/ (m/sub H+-/ = 300 GeV). We first explain why and how high energy pp colliders may search for Higgs' and we compare their possible performances to those of the e/sup +/e/sup -/ and ep colliders at all possible mass scale (from few tens of GeV's up to 1 TeV). We then estimate the rates of the signals and the main backgrounds. We define the main characteristics of these events as reproduced by M.C. generators (especially implemented with these processes) and simulated through an idealized 4..pi.. fine-grained calorimeter. A trigger strategy for W- and Z-pairs is derived from this study. 26 refs., 28 figs.

Detecting W/Z pairs and Higgs at high energy pp colliders: Main experimental issues

Description: The main detection issues implied by the search for W and Z/sup 0/ pairs and Higgs in a high energy pp collider context are discussed here. It includes: precise electron identification, missing energy measurement, multilepton recognition, sophisticated jet pattern recognition, and pile-up. The study uses, as much as possible, a ''realistic simulation of life.''

Searching for supersymmetry at the SSC

Description: Supersymmetric (SUSY) models have generated increasing amounts of attention in recent years as a means of understanding the roles of scalar particles in a field theory. Since supersymmetry connects fermions and bosons in a natural framework, theorists are hopeful that it will reduce the freedom surrounding fermions and scalars in the Weinberg-Salam model. No satisfactory model exists at this time, but the structure of the supersymmetric algebra is sufficiently attractive to warrant a serious study of its consequences. It is possible to make a great many predictions which are independent of the choice of a specific model. In this report we make a detailed attempt to study the experimental problems posed by supersymmetric theories and to analyze the capabilities of an SSC to find the many new particles predicted by these theories. The plan of this report is as follows. The present theoretical situation of supersymmetric phenomenology is discussed, and the results contained in the literature are briefly reviewed. The experimental signatures for the production of various SUSY particles are examined with varying assumptions about the SUSY masses and decay scenarios. The background from known physics to events containing the new SUSY particles is discussed. We pay particular attention to the two jet background. A discussion of the characteristics of events containing SUSY particles is given, including the E/sub t/ missing spectra and the average number of jets per event. Trigger requirements necessary to identify SUSY particles are considered. The results of two detector simulations are presented: one is a classical 4..pi.. detector for which we have used the CDF simulation package and the other is a simple 4..pi.. calorimeter. Finally, a Monte Carlo written by R.M. Barnett and H. Haber is discussed, and their results are compared with those obtained from ISAJET. 14 references, 30 figures.

Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in the electron+muon final state

Description: We report the result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark ({tilde t}{sub 1}) in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb{sup -1}. The scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a b quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino ({tilde {nu}}), and the search is performed in the electron plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model prediction is detected, and improved exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set in the (M{sub {tilde t}{sub 1}}, M{sub {tilde {nu}}}) mass plane.

Combination of CDF and D0 measurements of the $W$ boson helicity in top quark decays

Description: We report the combination of recent measurements of the helicity of the W boson from top quark decay by the CDF and D0 collaborations, based on data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.7-5.4 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions collected during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Combining measurements that simultaneously determine the fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (f{sub 0}) and right-handed (f{sub +}) helicities, we find f{sub 0} = 0.722 {+-} 0.081 [{+-} 0.062 (stat.) {+-} 0.052 (syst.)] and f{sub +} = -0.033 {+-} 0.046 [{+-} 0.034 (stat.) {+-} 0.031 (syst.)]. Combining measurements where one of the helicity fractions is fixed to the value expected in the standard model, we find f{sub 0} = 0.682 {+-} 0.057 [{+-} 0.035 (stat.) {+-} 0.046 (syst.)] and f{sub +} = ?0.015 {+-} 0.035 [{+-} 0.018 (stat.) {+-} 0.030 (syst.)]. The results are consistent with standard model expectations.

Measurement of the differential cross section $d\sigma/dt$ in elastic $p\bar{p}$ scattering at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV

Description: We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section differential cross section d{sigma}(p{bar p}{yields}p{bar p})/dt as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of {approx}31 nb{sup -1} collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron p{bar p} Collider operating conditions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV and covers the range 0.26 < |t| < 1.2 GeV{sup 2}. For |t| < 0.6 GeV{sup 2}, d{sigma}/dt is described by an exponential function of the form Ae{sup -b|t|} with a slope parameter b = 16.86 {+-} 0.10 (stat) {+-} 0.20 (syst) GeV{sup -2}. A change in slope is observed at |t| {approx} 0.6 GeV{sup 2}, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.

Search for quirks at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider

Description: We report results of a search for particles with anomalously high ionization in events with a high transverse energy jet and large missing transverse energy in 2.4 fb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron p{bar p} collider. Production of such particles (quirks) is expected in scenarios with extra QCD-like SU(N) sectors, and this study is the first dedicated search for such signatures. We find no evidence of a signal and set a lower mass limit of 107 GeV for the mass of a charged quirk with strong dynamics scale {Lambda} in the range from 10 keV to 1 MeV.

Search for the Higgs boson in H ---> WW(*) decays in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson in H {yields} WW{sup (*)} decays with e{sup +}e{sup -}, e{sup {+-}}{mu}{sup {-+}} and {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -} final states in p{bar p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The data, collected from April 2002 to June 2004 with the D0 detector, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 300-325 pb{sup -1}, depending on the final state. The number of events observed is consistent with the expectation from backgrounds. Limits from the combination of all three channels on the Higgs production cross section times branching ratio {sigma} x BR(H {yields} WW{sup (*)}) are presented.

Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the ZH->vvbb channel in 5.2 fb-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

Description: A search is performed for the standard model Higgs boson in 5.2 fb{sup -1} of p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The final state considered is a pair of b jets and large missing transverse energy, as expected from p{bar p} {yields} ZH {yields} {nu}{bar {nu}}b{bar b} production. The search is also sensitive to the WH {yields} {ell}{nu}b{bar b} channel when the charged lepton is not identified. For a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV, a limit is set at the 95% C.L. on the cross section multiplied by branching fraction for (p{bar p} {yields} (Z/W)H) x (H {yields} b{bar b}) that is a factor of 3.7 larger than the standard model value, consistent with the factor of 4.6 expected.

Double parton interactions in photon+3 jet events in ppbar collisions sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

Description: We have used a sample of photon+3 jets events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb{sup -1} to determine the fraction of events with double parton scattering (f{sub DP}) in a single ppbar collision at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. The DP fraction and effective cross section (sigma{sub eff}), a process-independent scale parameter related to the parton density inside the nucleon, are measured in three intervals of the second (ordered in p{sub T}) jet transverse momentum pT{sub jet2} within the range 15 < pT{sub jet2} < 30 GeV. In this range, f{sub DP} varies between 0.23 < f{sub DP} < 0.47, while sigma{sub eff} has the average value sigma{sub effave} = 16.4 {+-} 0.3(stat) {+-} 2.3(syst) mb.

Measurement of the t anti-t production cross section in p anti-p collistions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV in dilepton final states

Description: The authors present a measurement of the top quark pair (t{bar t}) production cross section in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using events with two charged leptons in the final state. This analysis utilizes an integrated luminosity of 224-243 pb{sup -1} collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. They observe 13 events in the e{sup +}e{sup -}, e{mu} and {mu}{sup +} {mu}{sup -} channels with an expected background of 3.2 {+-} 0.7 events. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure a t{bar t} production cross section of {sigma}{sub t{bar t}} = 8.6{sub -2.7}{sup +3.2}(stat) {+-} 1.1(syst) {+-} 0.6(lumi) pb, consistent with the standard model prediction.

Production of WZ events in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV and limits on anomalous WWZ couplings

Description: The authors present results from a search for WZ production with subsequent decay to {ell}{nu}{ell}'{bar {ell}}' ({ell} and {ell}' = e or {mu}) using 0.30 fb{sup -1} of data collected by the D0 experiment between 2002 and 2004 at the Tevatron. Three events with WZ decay characteristics are observed. With an estimated background of 0.71 {+-} 0.08 events, we measure the WZ production cross section to be 4.5{sub -2.6}{sup +3.8} pb, with a 95% C.L. upper limit of 13.3 pb. The 95% C.L. limits for anomalous WWZ couplings are found to be -2.0 < {Delta}{kappa}{sub Z} < 2.4 for form factor scale {Lambda} = 1 TeV, and -0.48 < {lambda}{sub Z} < 0.48 and -0.49 < {Delta}g{sub 1}{sup Z} < 0.66 for {Lambda} = 1.5 TeV.

Search for neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons in multijet events at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: We have performed a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with bottom quarks in p{bar p} collisions, using 260 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross sections for these processes are enhanced in many extensions of the standard model (SM), such as in its minimal supersymmetric extension at large tan {beta}. The results of our analysis agree with expectations from the SM, and we use our measurements to set upper limits on the production of neutral Higgs bosons in the mass range of 90 to 150 GeV.

Description: We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the s-channel and t-channel using neural networks for signal-background separation. We have analyzed 230 pb{sup -1} of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and find no evidence for a single top quark signal. The resulting 95% confidence level upper limits on the single top quark production cross sections are 6.4 pb in the s-channel and 5.0 pb in the t-channel.

Search for first-generation scalar leptoquarks in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96-TeV

Description: The authors report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks (LQ) in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 252 pb{sup -1} collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the D0 detector. They observe no evidence for LQ production in the topologies arising from LQ{ovr LQ} {yields} eqeq and LQ{ovr LQ} {yields} eqvq, and derive 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of {beta}, where {beta} is the branching fraction for LQ {yields} eq. The limits are 241 and 218 GeV/c{sup 2} for {beta} = 1 and 0.5, respectively. These results are combined with those obtained by D0 at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV, which increases these LQ mass limits to 256 and 234 GeV/c{sup 2}.

Search for large extra spatial dimensions in dimuon production at D0

Description: We present the results of a search for the e.ects of large extra spatial dimensions in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV in events containing a pair of energetic muons. The data correspond to 246 pb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Good agreement with the expected background was found, yielding no evidence for large extra dimensions. We set 95% C.L. lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale between 0.85 TeV and 1.27 TeV within several formalisms. These are the most stringent limits achieved in the dimuon channel to date.

The Upgraded D0 detector

Description: The D0 experiment enjoyed a very successful data-collection run at the Fermilab Tevatron collider between 1992 and 1996. Since then, the detector has been upgraded to take advantage of improvements to the Tevatron and to enhance its physics capabilities. We describe the new elements of the detector, including the silicon microstrip tracker, central fiber tracker, solenoidal magnet, preshower detectors, forward muon detector, and forward proton detector. The uranium/liquid-argon calorimeters and central muon detector, remaining from Run I, are discussed briefly. We also present the associated electronics, triggering, and data acquisition systems, along with the design and implementation of software specific to D0.
