Notes on Luminosity Variation at ISABELLE

Description: In the present ISABELLE design, the luminosity at each insertion will be the same, unless special efforts are taken to get a low-..beta.. insertion or reduced crossing angle. These can only change the luminosity by factors of 2 to 4 from insertion to insertion. An estimation of the range of desired luminosities is given.

Estimates of post-acceleration longitudinal bunch compression

Description: A simple analytic method is developed, based on physical approximations, for treating transient implosive longitudinal compression of bunches of heavy ions in an accelerator system for ignition of inertial-confinement fusion pellet targets. Parametric dependences of attainable compressions and of beam path lengths and times during compression are indicated for ramped pulsed-gap lines, rf systems in storage and accumulator rings, and composite systems, including sections of free drift. It appear… more

One-dimensional approximate technique for earth penetration calculations

Description: The penetration process is approximated by the one-dimensional expansion of a cylindrical cavity in an infinite solid. Linear and quadratic forms are used to describe, piecewise, the volumetric response of the target during loading at the shock front. It is assumed that the density locks at the shocked state. The shear strength of the target is taken to be a piecewise linear function of pressure. However, it is assumed that the target material is weak in shear and, thus, that the effect of shea… more

PTA-1 computer program for treating pressure transients in hydraulic networks including the effect of pipe plasticity. [LMFBR]

Description: Pressure pulses in the intermediate sodium system of a liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactor, such as may originate from a sodium/water reaction in a steam generator, are propagated through the complex sodium piping network to system components such as the pump and intermediate heat exchanger. To assess the effects of such pulses on continued reliable operation of these components and to contribute to system designs which result in the mitigation of these effects, Pressure Transient Analysis… more

Economic impact of corrosion and scaling problems in geothermal energy systems

Description: Corrosion and scaling problems have a significant impact on geothermal plant economics. A power plant must amortize the capital investment over a 20-year period and achieve satisfactory operating efficiency to achieve financial success. Corrosion and scale incrustations have been encountered in all geothermal plants, and to various degrees, adversely affected plant life times and power output. Using published data this report analyzes known geothermal corrosion and scaling phenomena for signifi… more

Approximate method of elastic--plastic fracture analysis for nozzle corner cracks

Description: Two intermediate test vessels with inside nozzle corner cracks have been pressurized to failure at ORNL by the HSST Program. Vessel V-5 leaked without fracturing at 88/sup 0/C (190/sup 0/F), and Vessel V-9 failed by fast fracture at 24/sup 0/C (75/sup 0/F) as expected. The nozzle corner failure strains were 6.5 and 8.4 percent, both considerably greater than pretest plane strain estimates. The inside nozzle corner tangential strains were negative, implying transverse contraction along the crack… more

Design Calculations for a Neutron Collimator for the TFTR

Description: Some of the design calculations for a collimator for TFTR application are presented and discussed. Discrete ordinates transport calculations have been completed for several right circular cylindrical stainless steel collimators using a 14-MeV neutron, isotropic, 30-cm radius disc source to approximate a plasma volume source. The collimators considered in these survey calculations consisted of 3-cm diameter columns centrally located in 60-cm diameter stainless steel cylinders that varied in leng… more

Photon Dose Rate From Induced Activity in the Beam Stop of a 400 GeV Proton Accelerator

Description: Calculated results are presented of the photon dose rate from the induced activity produced in the beam stop of a high-energy proton accelerator. Incident proton energies of 400 GeV, 200 GeV, and 30 GeV are considered. In each case the photon dose rate is given as a function of radius in the beam stop and as a function of time after the beam is turned off for assumed operating times of 90 days and 10 years.

Assessment of the loss of radioactive isotopes from solidified wastes

Description: Amounts of /sup 137/Cs and /sup 239/Pu entering the environment by leaching of grout products are predicted as functions of time, considering a 55-gal drum as a finite source and as a semi-infinite medium with and without decay. Significant differences between finite-cylinder and semi-infinite-medium calculations appear after a few years of leaching when the effective diffusivity (D) is 1.2 x 10/sup -9/ cm/sup 2//s, but do not appear up to 3,000 years when D is 6.0 x 10/sup -16/ cm/sup 2//s. Absolute instrumental neutron activation analysis at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory

Description: The Environmental Science Division at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory has in use a system of absolute Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). Basically, absolute INAA is dependent upon the absolute measurement of the disintegration rates of the nuclides produced by neutron capture. From such disintegration rate data, the amount of the target element present in the irradiated sample is calculated by dividing the observed disintegration rate for each nuclide by the expected value for the d… more

Improved criticality search techniques for low and high enriched systems

Description: A new automated search technique has been developed to improve the computational efficiency of performing criticality searches on low and high enriched systems with codes such as ANISN and KENO-IV. The technique employs a least-squares fit to a cubic polynomial on parameter values that have been previously generated either by the Extended Mean Value Theorem (EMVT) or by previous curve fits. The solution of the cubic for its roots at the desired value of K-effective completes one pass for the fi… more

Magnetotelluric interpretations in a crustal environment. Semi-annual progress report, June 1, 1977-December 30, 1977

Description: A generalized thin layer analysis is described which includes a conductive layer and a resistive layer into a single layer. The equations describing the thin layer effects are reviewed and examples of comparisons between thin layer and generalized thin layer calculations are shown. Implementation of multiple scale analysis to allow the handling of large models in reasonable fashion was investigated. Some tests of these ideas on one-dimensional models are described. (MHR)

Measurement of the total hemispherical emittance of copper and of spectrally selective surfaces. Report No. 2992

Description: The transient calorimetric technique is used to measure the temperature dependence of the total hemispherical emittance of polished copper, solar selective thin films on copper and a solar selective thin film on a metal film on quartz. Experimental results on copper do not agree with the predictions of the Davisson and Weeks theory. Areal mapping of arbitrary plane regions onto rectangular meshes. [For setting up hydrodynamics calculations]

Description: A simple and powerful method is presented for calculating all areas of intersection that occur when a plane region of arbitrary shape and connectivity overlaps the cells of a rectangular mesh. This procedure has been successfully used in an algorithm for a digital computer, and details are given for a unique procedure which effectively sidesteps floating point problems associated with machine noise. A simplifying procedure is also outlined for areal mapping of a collection of complex planar con… more

Proton accumulator ring injection studies

Description: Protons may be created in an accelerator or storage ring by stripping electrons from neutral hydrogen atoms that have been injected into the machine. Because Liouville's theorem is violated by this type of injection, particles may be continually injected into a region of phase space that is already populated, and the density in that region increases with time. A computational investigation was made of the evolution of the distribution of particles in longitudinal phase space during such an inje… more
