Description: ABS> The removal rates of iron, nickel, and chromium from synthetic stainless steel waste solutions during electrolysis over a mercury cathode were studied. The loading capacity of the mercury for the stainless steel metals was estimated on the basis of laboratory experiments to be about two% by weight. Description: A description is given of the ferrite biasing system for the four tuned radio frequency cavities of the synchrotron. Each ferrite loaded double cavity has a single turn bias winding which is driven to a peak current of 13,500 amperes by a push-pull transformer arrangement. PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIES OF Fe--Cr--Al-CLAD FUEL SYSTEMS.

Description: Reactions which can occur between oxidation-resistant Fe - CR - AL base alloys and UO{sub 2} at 500 to 1200 deg C are discussed. Aluminum in the Fe - Cr - Al-base cladding reduces the UO{sub 2} in the cermet fuels at 1000 to 1200 deg C. The U dissolves and diffuses through the cladding and is converted to an oxide. Oxygen combines with Al forming Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} which inhibits Al diffusion into the UO{sub 2}. The diffusion for Al in Cr leads to the development of a Cr barrier and reduces the … more

Description: The rapid dissolution of uranium dioxide is described, wherein copper is added to molten lead chloride at 550 deg C. and chlorine is passed through the melt. The integral dissolution of zirconium-clad uranium dioxide fuels is also described. ADVANCED PRESSURE VESSEL MATERIALS.

Description: Data on 5Cr - 3Mo - 12Ni alloy, PH13 - 8Mo and Iconel 718 for pressure vessel application are given. The 5Cr - 3Mo - 12Ni posseses characteristics suited to uniform aging of heavy sections. Tensile and toughness properties are good, and structural stability up to 315 deg C is adequate. Weldability with 12Ni - 3Cr - 3Mo filler material is good but 12Ni - 5Cr - 3Mo filler is more efficient. Aging characteristics of PH13 - 8Mo may not be suited to uniform aging of heavy sections. Corrosion Tests in Molten Lead-Lead Chloride

Description: Corrosion tests were run on some commercial grade metals, an alloy steel, stainless steels, chromium-- nickel-iron alloys, nickel base alloys, cobalt base alloys, and a chromium-- nickel-- cobalt-- iron ailoy in the system: leadlead chloride-lead chloride vapor at 528 deg C under an argon atmosphere. LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT OF A CARRIER-PRECIPITATION PROCESS FOR THE RECOVERY OF STRONTIUM FROM PUREX WASTES

Description: Strontium recovery from Purex 1WW was investigated with simulated feeds and tracer activities. Initial experiments demonstrated recovery of over 70% of the strontium by sulfate precipitation from partially neutralized 1WW by either increasing the sulfate concentration to about 3 M or by adding carriers such as lead. Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina.
