FEASIBILITY OF PARTIAL CHEMICAL CONTROL FOR THE SM-2. SM-2 (FORMERLY APPR- 1B) DESIGN PROGRAM, TASK 12-CHEMICAL CONTROL

Description: Chemical control of the SM-2 was evaluated both as a partial substitute for burnable poison in the fuel element meat and as a means of improving plant performance. Based on a review of existing information, boric acid was chosen as the reference soluble poison. It was shown that 60% of the burnable B/sup 10/ in the fuel element matrix could be replaced by soluble B/sup 10/ in the coolant without impairing plant stability during load transients. The feasibility of improving power distribution an… more

Corrosion of AISI Type 304 Stainless Steel in High Temperature Borated Water

Description: BS>The corrosion of type 304 stainless steel in water containing boric acid at 600 deg F and 2000 psig and at a flowvelocity of seven feet per second was investigated as a function of boron concentration and of alkaliknity. At a boron concentration of 39 ppm and at a pH value of 10, controlled with lithium hydroxide, no trend of corrosive attack with time was found after the first tw0 days. At a concentration of 41 ppm boron wlth no pH control (pH = 6.9), a regression tyoe equation of the form … more

Studies of the Corrosion of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel and Aisi 4135 Carbon Steel Exposed to Saturated Solutions of Boric Acid

Description: AISI 304 stainless steel and AISI 4135 carbon steel specimens were exposed to five wt.% (70 F) and thirteen wt.% (140 F) boric acid solutions. These are essentially saturation concentrations. After four weeks exposure it was found that the AISI 304 stainless steel was not attacked under these conditions but that the carbon steel had developed considerable corrosion products in the form of scale. It was found that the attack on carbon steel at 70 F in a five wt.% boric acid solution was greatly … more

The Use of Boron for Fluoride Complexing in Thorex Dissolver Solutions

Description: Preliminary measurements of the corrosion of titanium were made in 13M HNO/sub 3/ -0.05M fluoride using O.1M H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/ as a liquid and vapor- phase complexing agent. Titanium Ax-55 was attacked at average rates of 0.58 and 0.33 mil/ month in the liquid and vapor. In dissolver solutions containing 0.5 and 1.0M titanium, all rates were less than 0.1 mil/month. EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL STUDIES OF REFLECTRO CONTROL FOR THE ADVANCED ENGINEERING TEST REACTOR. PART A. EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES WITH THE REFLECTOR CONTROL SYSTEM MODEL. PART B. ANALYTICAL STUDIES OF REFLECTOR CONTROL

Description: Studies of reflector control for the Advanced Engineering Test Reactor were made. The performance of various parts of the reflector control system model such as the safety reflector and the water jet educator, boric acid injection, and demineralizer systems is discussed. The experimental methods and results obtained are discussed. Four reflector control schemes were studied. The schemes were a single-region and three-region reflector schemes two separate reflectors, and two connected reflectors… more
