Replica Registration Service - Functional Interface Specification1.0

Description: The goal of the Replica Registration Service (RRS) is toprovide a uniform interface to various file catalogs, replica catalogs, and metadata catalogs. It can be thought of as an abstraction of theconcepts used in such systems to register files and their replicas. Someexperiments may prefer to support their own file catalogs (which may havetheir own specialized structures, semantics, and implementations) ratherthan use a standard replica catalog. Providing an RRS that can interactwith such a cata… more

Report for CS 698-95 ?Directed Research ? Performance Modeling:? Using Queueing Network Modeling to Analyze the University of San Francisco Keck Cluster Supercomputer

Description: In today's world, the need for computing power is becoming more pressing daily. Our need to process, analyze, and store data is quickly exceeding the capabilities of small self-contained serial machines, such as the modern desktop PC. Initially, this gap was filled by the creation of supercomputers: large-scale self-contained parallel machines. However, current markets, as well as the costs to develop and maintain such machines, are quickly making such machines a rarity, used only in highly spe… more

A First Look at Beam Diagnostics for the Rhic Electron Cooling Project.

Description: High energy electron cooling [1] is essential to meet the luminosity specification for RHIC II [2]. In preparation for electron cooling, an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) test facility [3] is under construction at BNL. A preliminary description of Diagnostics for the ERL was presented at an earlier workshop [4]. A significant portion of the eCooling Diagnostics will be a simple extension of those developed for the ERL test facility. In this paper we present a preliminary report on eCooling Diagnos… more

RSG Deployment Case Testing Results

Description: The RSG deployment case design is centered on taking the RSG system and producing a transport case that houses the RSG in a safe and controlled manner for transport. The transport case was driven by two conflicting constraints, first that the case be as light as possible, and second that it meet a stringent list of Military Specified requirements. The design team worked to extract every bit of weight from the design while striving to meet the rigorous Mil-Spec constraints. In the end compromise… more

Final Report: RPP-WTP Semi-Integrated Pilot Plant

Description: In August 2004 the last of the SIPP task testing ended--a task that formally began with the issuance of the RPP-WTP Test Specification in June 2003. The planning for the task was a major effort in itself and culminated with the input of all stakeholders, DOE, Bechtel National, Inc., Washington Group International, in October 2003 at Hanford, WA (Appendix A). This report documents the activities carried out as a result of that planning. Campaign IV, the fourth and final step towards the Semi-Int… more

Fabrication of Planar Laser Targets with Sub-Micrometer Thickness Uniformity

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory routinely manufactures planar laser targets that consist of stacked and bonded foils for physics experiments on high-energy lasers. One recent planar laser target, the Equation of State target, had extremely tight specifications. The target required four bonded layers with thickness uniformities of several hundred nm, and the adhesive bonds between the layers could not exceed a few {micro}m. This paper describes the manufacturing process that was developed… more

Achieve Continuous Injection of Solid Fuels into Advanced Combustion System Pressures

Description: The overall objective of this project is the development of a mechanical rotary-disk feeder, known as the Stamet Posimetric High Pressure Solids Feeder System, to feed dry granular coal continuously and controllably into pressurized environments of up to 35 kg/cm{sup 2} (500 psi). This was to be accomplished in two phases. The first task was to review materials handling experience in pressurized operations as it related to the target pressures for this project, and review existing coal preparat… more

Determination of Reportable Radionuclides for DWPF Sludge Batch 3 (Macrobatch 4)

Description: The Waste Acceptance Product Specifications (WAPS) 1.2 require that ''The Producer shall report the inventory of radionuclides (in Curies) that have half-lives longer than 10 years and that are, or will be, present in concentrations greater than 0.05 percent of the total inventory for each waste type indexed to the years 2015 and 3115''. Achieving Large Dynamic Aperture in the ILC Damping Rings

Description: The Damping Rings for the International Linear Collider have challenging requirements for the acceptance, because of the high average injected beam power and the large beam produced from the positron source. At the same time, the luminosity goals mean that the natural emittance must be very small, and this makes it particularly difficult to achieve a good dynamic aperture. We describe design approaches and lattice designs that meet the emittance specification and have very promising dynamic ape… more

Statistical Methods Handbook for Advanced Gas Reactor Fuel Materials

Description: Fuel materials such as kernels, coated particles, and compacts are being manufactured for experiments simulating service in the next generation of high temperature gas reactors. These must meet predefined acceptance specifications. Many tests are performed for quality assurance, and many of these correspond to criteria that must be met with specified confidence, based on random samples. This report describes the statistical methods to be used. The properties of the tests are discussed, includin… more

The LCLS Gas Attenuator Revisited

Description: In the report ''X-ray attenuation cell'' [1] a preliminary analysis of the gas attenuator for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) was presented. This analysis was carried out for extremely stringent set of specifications. In particular, a very large diameter for the unobstructed beam was set (1 cm) to accommodate the spontaneous radiation; the attenuator was supposed to cover the whole range of energies of the coherent radiation, from 800 eV to 8000 eV; the maximum attenuation was set at the… more

Update on Specifications for NIF Ignition Targets and Their Rollup Into an Error Budget

Description: Targets intended to produce ignition on NIF are being simulated and the simulations are used to set specifications for target fabrication. Recent design work has focused on designs that assume only 1.0 MJ of laser energy instead of the previous 1.6 MJ. To perform with less laser energy, the hohlraum has been redesigned to be more efficient than previously, and the capsules are slightly smaller. The main-line hohlraum design now has a SiO2 foam fill, a wall of U-Dy-Au, and shields mounted betwee… more

Chemical Analysis Of Beryllium Shells

Description: There is a need to understand the level of high-Z impurities in Beryllium shells prepared by sputter coating. The Ignition Point Design Requirements state the following: ''Except for allowed ingredients, as listed in the ablator composition entries, the ablator material in all layers shall contain sufficiently low impurity levels that the sum over all impurities of atom fraction*Z{sup 2} shall be less than or equal to 0.2''. This is a tight specification that requires careful materials analysis… more
