Introduction to Building Systems Performance: Houses That Work II; Period of Performance: January 2003--December 2003

Description: Buildings should be suited to their environments. Design and construction must be responsive to varying seismic risks, wind loads, and snow loads, as well as soil conditions, frost depth, orientation, and solar radiation. In addition, building envelopes and mechanical systems should be designed for a specific hygro-thermal regions, rain exposure, and interior climate. The Building Science Consortium (BSC) design recommendations are based on the hygro-thermal regions with reference to the annual… more

Calculation of Phonon Density of States for Alpha-U

Description: Phonon density of states for {alpha}-U was calculated with the linear response theory and the RSPFLAPW (fully relativistic full potential spin-polarized linearized-augmented-plane-wave) method. It has been used for studying the temperature dependence of the specific heat of uranium. It was shown that the details of the phonon DOS are not very important for the specific heat, and practically the same results can be obtained with Debye model.

Aggregation of Distributed Generation Assets in New York State: Appendix

Description: This report appendix describes aspects of a project to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of aggregating distributed generating resources in New York State. This project demonstrates a system that allows distributed generation (DG) to participate in competitive markets in much the same way as large central-station power plants. This approach involves aggregating the distributed demand-side resources into a single transaction entity consistent with the requirements of the New Yor… more

Distribution of incoherent space - Charge tune shift of a bi-Gaussian beam

Description: The incoherent space-charge self-force tune shift of a bi-Gaussian coasting beam is revisited. The distribution density of the incoherent horizontal or vertical space-charge tune shift is computed numerically using a statistical method. Analytic approach has also been made with approximation. The results show a broad peak centered about 0.633 with a rms spread 0.168 of the linear space-charge tune shift.

Sampling ENDL Watt Fission Spectra

Description: All of the fission spectra in the Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, ENDL [1], are defined by a simple analytical function: a Watt spectrum [2], W(a,b,E') = C*Exp[-a*E']*Sinh[(b*E'){sup 1/2}]. Where the normalization, C, is given by, C = [{pi}b/4a]{sup 1/2} Exp[b/4a]/a. The coefficients a and b vary from one isotope to another and also vary weakly with the incident neutron energy. Here E' is the secondary energy, i.e., the energy at which the fission neutrons are emitted. In ENDL energy units of M… more

WindPACT Rotor Design Study: Hybrid Tower Design; Period of Performance: 29 June 2000 -- 28 February 2004

Description: The cost of a wind turbine tower can represent as much as 20% of the cost of an entire megawatt-scale horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) and as much as 10% of the total cost of energy. The tower is a major cost component, and its design is important: Its structural properties are key to the response of the rotor; its height determines the wind regime that the rotor experiences; it allows access to the turbine nacelle and rotor; and it houses components of the electrical connection and the cont… more

New Method for Dual-Axis Fatigue Testing of Large Wind Turbine Blades Using Resonance Excitation and Spectral Loading

Description: The blades of a wind turbine are generally considered to be the most critical component of the wind turbine system. The fundamental purpose of performing fatigue tests on wind turbine blades is to demonstrate that a blade, when manufactured to a certain set of specifications, has the prescribed reliability and service life. The purpose of the research conducted for this project is the advancement of knowledge and capabilities in the area of wind turbine blade fatigue testing.

Evaluation of Xenon Gas Detection as a Means for Identifying Buried Transuranic Waste at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex, Idaho National Environmental and Engineering Laboratory

Description: Xenon is produced as a fission product in nuclear reactors and through spontaneous fission of some transuranic (TRU) isotopes. Xenon gas is nearly inert and will be released from buried TRU waste. This document describes and evaluates the potential for analyzing xenon isotopes in soil gas to detect TRU waste in the subsurface at the Idaho National Environmental and Engineering Laboratory's Radioactive Waste Management Complex.

MOAB : a mesh-oriented database.

Description: A finite element mesh is used to decompose a continuous domain into a discretized representation. The finite element method solves PDEs on this mesh by modeling complex functions as a set of simple basis functions with coefficients at mesh vertices and prescribed continuity between elements. The mesh is one of the fundamental types of data linking the various tools in the FEA process (mesh generation, analysis, visualization, etc.). Thus, the representation of mesh data and operations on those … more

Implementation of Fisheries Enhancement Opportunities on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation; Coeur d'Alene Tribe Fish, Water, and Wildlife Program, REVISED 2002 Annual Report.

Description: Historically, the Coeur d'Alene Indian Tribe depended on runs of anadromous salmon and steelhead along the Spokane River and Hangman Creek, as well as resident and adfluvial forms of trout and char in Coeur d'Alene Lake, for survival. Dams constructed in the early 1900s on the Spokane River in the City of Spokane and at Little Falls (further downstream) were the first dams that initially cut-off the anadromous fish runs from the Coeur d'Alene Tribe. These fisheries were further removed by the c… more

Dimensional errors in LIGA-produced metal structures due to thermal expansion and swelling of PMMA.

Description: Numerical methods are used to examine dimensional errors in metal structures microfabricated by the LIGA process. These errors result from elastic displacements of the PMMA mold during electrodeposition and arise from thermal expansion of the PMMA when electroforming is performed at elevated temperatures and from PMMA swelling due to absorption of water from aqueous electrolytes. Both numerical solutions and simple analytical approximations describing PMMA displacements for idealized linear and… more
