D0 Silicon Upgrade: Vapor Pressure Thermometry System Near LN2 Subcooler

Description: Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) is in the process of upgrading its detectors. Among these upgrades is the need for more transfer lines containing both liquid nitrogen and helium gas. These two fluids are used to provide the necessary operating cryogenic temperatures for the various detectors, such as the Visible Light Photon Counter (VLPC) and the solenoid inside the detector's calorimeter. With additional piping, it is important to monitor the temperatures to assure that the d… more

D0 Silicon Upgrade: Thermal Conductivity Measurements of a Variety of Epoxies and Greases Used for CDF/D0 Silicon Detector Ladder Construction

Description: The bulk thermal conductivity of several epoxy mixtures was measured with a setup at Lab D. Samples are prepared by using two aluminum cylinders of 3/4-inch diameter. The cylinders have holes drilled in them for insertion of temperature sensors (0.040-inch diameter thermistors), a heating element (standard resistor), and a tapped hole for heat sinking to a plate. The two cylinders are held together during gluing, and the thickness of the glue bead is controlled by using a shim of kapton tape, n… more

Characterization of printing and laser trimming of DuPont 2000 series resistors on DuPont 951 {open_quotes}Green Tape{trademark}{close_quotes}

Description: DuPont 2000 series resistors were reviewed and found to come closest to our requirement of 1% resistor tolerance over the expected 30-year life of our products. The evaluation performed involved the characterization of both the printing and trimming processes. The printing process was characterized for firing temperature print thickness, print direction, resistor geometry and encapsulant effect. Laser trimming was characterized by first finding an operating envelope and then selecting an operat… more

Quadrupole shunt experiments at SPEAR

Description: As part of a program to align and stabilize the SPEAR storage ring, a switchable shunt resistor was installed on each quadrupole to bypass a small percentage of the magnet current. The impact of a quadrupole shunt is to move the electron beam orbit in proportion to the off-axis beam position at the quadrupole, and to shift the betatron tune. Initially, quadrupole shunts in SPEAR were used to position the electron beam in the center of the quadrupoles. This provided readback offsets for nearby b… more
