Determination of concentration profiles at interfaces and surfaces of partially miscible polymer blends

Description: The research is divided among several topics: wetting of thin liquid polyethylene-propylene films, Fourier reconstruction of density profiles of thin films using anomalous x-ray reflectivity, and temperature and concentration effects on grafted polymers in the melt. 3 figs.

An Investigation of Molybdenum and Molybdenum Oxide Catalyzed Hydrocarbon Formation Reactions. [Surface Chemistry of Ethylene Oxide on Pd(111)]

Description: Progress was made in the following four areas: activity of model catalyst (Mo oxides) for olefin metathesis (2 C[sub 3]H[sub 6] [r arrow] C[sub 4]H[sub 8] + C[sub 2]H[sub 4]); kinetics of Mo(100)-catalyzed olefin metathesis; surface chemistry of ethylene oxide on Pd(111); and uv source construction.

Malone refrigeration

Description: Malone refrigeration is the use of a liquid near its critical points without evaporations as working fluid in a regenerative or recuperative refrigeration cycle such as the Stirling and Brayton cycles. It's potential advantages include compactness, efficiency, an environmentally benign working fluid, and reasonable cost. One Malone refrigerator has been built and studied; two more are under construction. Malone refrigeration is such a new, relatively unexplored technology that the potential for… more

Influence of surface defects and local structure on oxygenate reaction pathways over metal oxide surfaces. Progress report, August 1992--July 1993

Description: Complete thermal desorption and photoemission studies of seven molecules (methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, isopropanol, acetone, waste and carbon monoxide) have been completed on four different SnO{sub 2}(110) surfaces (stoichiometric, reduced, slightly-defective and highly-defective). Initial thermal desorption studies of acetic acid and propene have also been done. Results indicate that different initial surface conditions can dramatically affect: (1) probability for heterolytic dissociat… more

Supported organometallic complexes, surface chemistry, spectroscopy, and catalysis. Progress report, September 15, 1992--November 14, 1993

Description: Goal is to elucidate and understand the surface chemistry and catalytic properties of well-defined, highly-reactive organometallic molecules (principally based upon abundant actinide, lanthanide, and early transition elements) adsorbed on metal oxides and halides. Nature of adsorbed species is probed by a battery of chemical and physicochemical techniques, to understand the nature of the molecule-surface coordination chemistry and how this can give rise to extremely high catalytic activity. Diosmacycloalkanes as Models for the Formation of Hydrocarbons From Surface Methylenes. Progress Report, November 1, 1992--October 31, 1993

Description: The report is divided into: vibrational models for surface ethylidenes (on catalyst surfaces); alpha vs beta hydrogen elimination in formation of propene from an osmacyclobutane; mechanism of formation and fragmentation of diosmacyclobutanes; reaction of dienes and allenes with diosmacyclobutanes; structure of Os(CO){sub 4}(C{sub 2}H{sub 4}), an osmacyclopropane; and reaction of {mu}-oxobis [(trifluoromethanesulfanato) (phenyl)iodine(III)] with Group 14 propargyl derivatives and a propargyl eth… more

Testing of ethylene propylene seals for the GA-4/GA-9 casks

Description: The primary O-ring seal of the GA-4 and GA-9 casks was tested for leakage with a full-scale mockup of the cask lid and flange. Tests were performed at temperatures of ambient, {minus}41{degrees}, 121{degrees}, and 193{degrees}C. Shim plates between the lid and flange simulated gaps caused by thermal distortion. The testing used a helium mass spectrometer leak detector (MSLD). Results showed that the primary seal was leaktight for all test conditions. Helium permeation through the seal began in … more

Direct aromatization of methane. Quarterly technical progress report No. 2, January 1--March 31, 1993

Description: The design of the quench reactor has been completed. A high temperature furnace, capable of reaching 1540{degrees}C has been ordered. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculations were carried out in order to determine the maximum possible yields of various products from methane pyrolysis, assuming that the reaction could be quenched at C{sub 10} aromatics. Acetylene, benzene and naphthalene were identified as the major products of such a process. Ethylene, propylene, cyclopentadiene, methylnaphthalen… more

Novel technologies for SO{sub x}/NO{sub x} removal from Flue Gas; Technical report, September 1--November 30, 1993

Description: The goal of this research is to develop a low temperature deNO{sub x} catalyst with activity high enough for boiler retrofit applications. Cu-ZrO{sub 2} is a promising low temperature catalyst for the selective reduction of No by propene. At NO = 1000 ppm, propene (C{sub 3}H{sub 6}) = 1000 ppm and 0{sub 2} = 1% and a space velocity of 13,000 h{sup {minus}1}, the NO conversion to N{sub 2} is 64% at 265{degrees}C. The performance of the catalyst, however, does not fulfill the requirement when use… more
