Performance of photocathode rf gun electron accelerators

Description: In Photo-Injectors (PI) electron guns, electrons are emitted from a photocathode by a short laser pulse and then accelerated by intense rf fields in a resonant cavity. The best known advantage of this technique is the high peak current with a good emittance (high brightness). This is important for short wavelength Free-Electron Lasers and linear colliders. PIs are in operation in many electron accelerator facilities and a large number of new guns are under construction. Some applications have e… more

A flat-cathode thermionic injector for the PHERMEX Radiographic Facility

Description: The PHERMEX (Pulsed High-Energy Radiographic Machine Emitting X-rays) standing-wave linear accelerator is a high-current electron beam generator used for flash-radiography. An improved electron gun has been designed employing a flat-thermionic cathode to replace the existing Pierce-geometry gun. The flat cathode yields increased current with the same applied voltage and cathode area as the Pierce gun. The ISIS code simulations indicate a beam current of 1.5 kA at 600 kV. The new geometry also r… more

Polarized source performance in 1992 for SLC--SLD

Description: In its initial operation, the SLC Polarized Electron Source successfully met the SLC goals for 1992 for intensity and efficiency. However, the stability of the beam at the source was marginal, and the polarization was only {approximately}28%. The SLC goal to provide > 10,000 Z events for the SLD from polarized electrons was met.

Experience with a radio frequency gun on the SSRL Injector Linac

Description: A-SSRL/Varian-Associates-built, one-and-a-half cavity microwave, thermionic-cathode gun has operated on the SSRL Injector Linac reliably without changing the cathode for over 10,000 hours, with no significant decrease in emission. Thus, for a pulsed electron beam, with a maximum of 0.5 A peak at 2 to 3 MeV from a 3.5 MW peak rf pulse of 2 {mu}s pulse width at 10 pps, the apparent but small amount of back bombardment of the cathode has been tolerable. Use of a bunch-compression alpha magnet and … more

Foil support structure for large electron guns

Description: This paper describes a novel support structure for a vacuum diode used to pump a gaseous laser with an electron beam. Conventional support structures are designed to hold a foil flat and rigid. This new structure takes advantage of the significantly greater strength of metals in pure tension, utilizing curved shapes for both foil and support structure. The shape of the foil is comparable to the skin of a balloon, and the shape of the support structures is comparable to the cables of a suspensio… more

The system utilize a VAX workstation and a Spiricon beam analyzer. A operator window (created through the Vista control software package) controls the emittance measurement system and the graphic presentation of the results. Quadrupole variation method is used for the ATF automatic emittance measurement system. A simple emittance for… more

Design of the Advanced Light Source timing system

Description: The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a third generation synchrotron radiation facility, and as such, has several unique timing requirements. Arbitrary Storage Ring filling patterns and high single bunch purity requirements demand a highly stable, low jitter timing system with the flexibility to reconfigure on a pulse-to-pulse basis. This modular system utilizes a highly linear Gauss Clock with ``on the fly`` programmable setpoints to track a free-running Booster ramping magnet and provides digita… more

An improved thermionic microwave gun and emittance-preserving transport line

Description: The positron/electron linac for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory can be used to accelerate electrons to 650 MeV. As part of a project to use this linac to test the quality of insertion devices, work has been done to develop a higher-brightness thermionic microwave gun of the SSRL type. The new gun design has smaller emittance by a factor of 3 to 4. The ratio of cathode field to maximum surface field is more than doubled. The new alpha-magnet-based transport line d… more

Integrated numerical modeling of a laser gun injector

Description: CEBAF is planning to incorporate a laser gun injector into the linac front end as a high-charge cw source for a high-power free electron laser and nuclear physics. This injector consists of a DC laser gun, a buncher, a cryounit and a chicane. The performance of the injector is predicted based on integrated numerical modeling using POISSON, SUPERFISH and PARMELA. The point-by-point method incorporated into PARMELA by McDonald is chosen for space charge treatment. The concept of ``conditioning fo… more

RF phase stabilization for RF photocathode gun through electro-optical monitoring

Description: An electro-optical technique is being developed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) to monitor and control the phase of the photocathode laser beam with respect to the RF drive field for the RF photocathode gun. This technique utilizes the RF field induced birefringence which is probed by the photocathode laser beam. A proof-of-principle experiment is described which has been performed using the ATF RF photocathode gun injection system for the linac.

The UV-FEL at the NSLS: Straight injection configuration

Description: We present a design of a colinear RF-photocathode gun and linac sections for the ultraviolet free-electron laser under study at the National Synchrotron Light Source. Inverse Helmholtz solenoid pair is used to control the divergence of the electron beam and present a slightly convergent and small beam into a conventional SLAC linac. The relative distance of the gun to the linac and the strength of the solenoidal field are chosen to minimize the emittance growth of the beam due to space charge. … more
