T,b, and new particle searches at p p colliders

Description: Experiments at the p{bar p} colliders at CERN and FNAL have an active program of heavy flavor physics. Recently, CDF at FNAL and UA1 at CERN have measured rare decays of the {Beta}{sup 0} {minus} {bar {Beta}}{sup 0} mixing. CDF has signals for {Beta}{sup {plus minus}} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup {plus minus}} and {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi}K{sup *0}. Both CDF and UA1 have set limits on the branching ratio of {Beta}{sup 0} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} and have measured {Beta}{sup 0} {minus… more

A measurement of the p p total cross section at radical s = 1800 GeV

Description: The {bar p}p differential elastic scattering cross section was measured at {radical}{bar s} = 1800 GeV, using an improved accelerator luminosity determination and CDF small angle data in the range of 0.05 {le} t {le} 0.2(GeV/c){sup 2}. By extrapolating the differential cross sections to t=0 and using the optical theorem we obtain a total cross section of {sigma}{sub tot}({bar p}p) = 72.0 {plus minus} 3.6 mb. This result is preliminary in the sense that we expect to further reduce the systematic… more

Heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders

Description: The search for the top quark has dominated heavy flavor physics at hadron colliders. For Standard model decay of top the present mass limit in m{sub t} > 89 GeV (95% C.L.). Bottom production cross sections are quite large at hadron colliders, thus providing enough statistics for extensive studies. Results on cross sections, B{sup 0} {minus} {bar B}{sup 0} mixing, exclusive channels and rare B decays will be summarized.

Isolated single and double direct photon production at CDF

Description: We present measurements of isolated direct phonon production in {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.18 TeV from the 1988--89 run of the Collider Detection at Fermilab (CDF). Quantum Chromodynamics is tested against measurements of the transverse momentum spectrum of single photon production ({bar p}p {yields} {gamma} + X), double photon production ({bar p}p {yields} {gamma}{gamma} + X), and the distribution of cos{theta} * in photon-jet events ({bar p}p {yields} {gamma}{sub J} + X). Prospects for electroweak parameter measurements at CDF

Description: The 4 pb{sup {minus}1} of 1.8 TeV {bar p}p collisions accumulated by the collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) have allowed various measurements of electroweak parameters. Three years from now results should be forthcoming on a sample of about 80 pb{sup {minus}1} which, in the likely context of that time, will still be quite significant.

Mini-jet and particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions

Description: Mini-jet and particle production are studied in the framework of HIJING Monte Carlo model which can describe pp and p{bar p} collisions well from ISR to Fermilab Tevatron energies. Mini-jets are shown to have eminent contributions to particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. However, parton shadowing and jet quenching also have important effects and can be studied by single particle distributions. 19 refs., 5 figs.

The search for top at CDF

Description: We present results on the search for the top quark in {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV. The data sample collected during the 1988--89 run with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) includes more than 4 pb{sup {minus}1}. We report here on an extension of previously published searches for the top quark in electron + jets and the dilepton channel electron-muon. The 95% confidence level limit on the top mass is 89 GeV/c{sup 2}.

Tune modulated beam-beam resonances in the Tevatron

Description: During the 88--89 Tevatron collider run, 6 antiproton bunches were colliding head-on with 6 proton bunches at 12 crossing points symetrically distributed around the ring. Typical intensities were 7 {times} 10{sup 10} and 2.5 {times} 10{sup 10} particles per bunch for protons and antiprotons respectively. The normalized transverse proton emittance (95% definition) was typically 25 {pi} mm-mr on both planes and the antiproton transverse emittance was typically 18 {pi} mm-mr. The working point (un… more

The W boson transverse momentum spectrum in proton-antiproton collisions at radical s = 1. 8 TeV

Description: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) was used to measure the transverse momentum distribution of W boson produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider. The W bosons were identified by the decay W {yields} e{nu}. The results are in good agreement with a next-to-leading order calculation. The cross section for W production with P{sub T} > 50 GeV/c is 423 {plus minus} 58 (stat.) {plus minus} 108 (sys.) pb. 58 refs., 53 figs., 16 tabs.

Calculations of bottom quark production at hadron colliders

Description: This thesis studies Monte Carlo simulations of QCD heavy flavor production processes (p{bar p} {yields} Q({anti Q})X) at hadron colliders. ISAJET bottom quark cross-sections are compared to the O({alpha} {sub s}{sup 3}) perturbative calculation of Nason, Dawson, and Ellis. These Monte Carlo cross-sections are computed from data samples which use different parton distribution functions and physics parameters. Distributions are presented in the heavy quark's transverse momentum and rapidity. Corr… more

Energy and energy width measurement in the FNAL antiproton accumulator

Description: The Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator has recently been used to produce Charmonium resonances (charm quark, anti-charm quark bound states) in proton-antiproton annihilations using an internal H{sub 2} gas jet target. A measurement of the resonance mass and width may be obtained from a precise knowledge of the antiproton beam energy and energy spread. The beam energy is measured to an accuracy of 1 part in 10{sup 4} in the range 6.3 Gev to 4.1 Gev by measuring the orbit length and revolution frequ… more
