Design and operation of an inert gas facility for thermoelectric generator storage

Description: While the flight hardware is protected by design from the harsh environments of space, its in-air storage often requires special protection from contaminants such as dust, moisture and other gases. One of these components, the radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) which powers the missions, was deemed particularly vulnerable to pre-launch aging because the generators remain operational at core temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees centigrade throughout the storage period. Any oxygen perm… more

The product consistency test for the DWPF wasteform

Description: The preliminary specifications on the glass wasteform to be produced by the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) require extensive characterization of the glass product both before actual production begins and then during production. To aid in this characterization, a leach test was needed that was easily reproducible, could be performed remotely on highly radioactive samples, and could yield results rapidly. Several standard leach tests were examined with a variety of test configurations. … more

A bulk niobium superconducting quarter wave resonator

Description: A bath-cooled all-niobium 160 MHz quarter wave resonator prototype was constructed and tested. The objective of this research has been the development of a high performance accelerating element with {beta}{sub opt} {approx equal} 0.11 for the ALPI linac at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The design of this resonator was based upon a previous 150 MHz model, with minor changes due to the different frequency and to modified welding procedure. An accelerating field of 5 MV/m was achieved at a … more

A review of the environmental behavior of uranium derived from depleted uranium alloy penetrators

Description: The use of depleted uranium (DU) penetrators as armor-piercing projectiles in the field results in the release of uranium into the environment. Elevated levels of uranium in the environment are of concern because of radioactivity and chemical toxicity. In addition to the direct contamination of the soil with uranium, the penetrators will also chemically react with rainwater and surface water. Uranium may be oxidized and leached into surface water or groundwater and may subsequently be transport… more

Accelerator-based intense neutron source for materials R D

Description: Accelerator-based neutron sources for R D of materials in nuclear energy systems, including fusion reactors, can provide sufficient neutron flux, flux-volume, fluence and other attractive features for many aspects of materials research. The neutron spectrum produced from the D-Li reaction has been judged useful for many basic materials research problems, and to be a satisfactory approximation to that of the fusion process. The technology of high-intensity linear accelerators can readily be appl… more

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Green-State Ceramics

Description: Proton (¹H) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging techniques are investigated as a means to nondestructively characterize green-state (unfired) Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} ceramic components. Spectroscopic results indicate that the organic additives used in the injection molding of ceramics behave as soft solids, with broad spectral peak widths (T₂ <0.5 ms) and moderate multicomponent spin-lattice relaxation rates (T{sub 1} ranging from 11 ms to 1 s). Because of the intrinsically different spectral ch… more

Description: We report H{sub 2}, CO and CO{sub 2} pumping speed measurements on a linear pump using NEG strip St 707 (Saes Getters Inc) as a function of both absorbed gases and number of activations. To simulate the conditions of an operating storage ring a gas mixture of 50% H{sub 2}, 35% CO and 15% CO{sub 2} is used in all measurements. Initial measured pumping speeds of >450{ell} m {sup {minus}1} s{sup {minus}1} decrease to 200 and 100{ell} m{sup {minus}1} s{sup {minus}1} for H{sub 2} and CO, respectivel… more
