H-Area Seepage Basins

Description: During the third quarter of 1990 the wells which make up the H-Area Seepage Basins (H-HWMF) monitoring network were sampled. Laboratory analyses were performed to measure levels of hazardous constituents, indicator parameters, tritium, nonvolatile beta, and gross alpha. A Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) scan was performed on all wells sampled to determine any hazardous organic constituents present in the groundwater. The primary contaminants observed at wells monitoring the H-Area Se… more

Po-210 as long-term integrating radon indicator in the indoor environment

Description: The general objective is to improve the knowledge about the transferring processes leading from airborne radon/radon daughters to embedded Po-210 in hard surfaces in the indoor environment. The specific goal of the research is to identify situations in which the surface activity of Po-210 can be used as a long-term indicator of lung cancer risk from past or future radon exposures.

Thulium-170 heat source

Description: An isotopic heat source is formed using stacks of thin individual layers of a refractory isotopic fuel, preferably thulium oxide, alternating with layers of a low atomic weight diluent, preferably graphite. The graphite serves several functions: to act as a moderator during neutron irradiation, to minimize bremsstrahlung radiation, and to facilitate heat transfer. The fuel stacks are inserted into a heat block, which is encased in a sealed, insulated and shielded structural container. Heat pipe… more

Three-dimensional contaminant plume dynamics in the vadose zone: Simulation of the 241-T-106 single-shell tank leak at Hanford

Description: Approximately 2,000 m{sup 3} of liquid containing radioactive and chemical wastes leaked from the 241-T-106 single-shell tank at the Hanford Site. The leak discharged into the unsaturated, coarse-grained sediments of the Hanford formation which underlie the base of the tank. The PORFLO-3 computer code was used to study plume migration for {sup 106}Ru and {sup 137}Cs. The flow and transport properties of the soils through which the plume has migrated are critical input data for the model but are… more

Validation and verification summary report for GRIMHX and TRIMHX

Description: As part of the code Certification process, codes used by Reactor Physics to calculate values in Technical Specifications or Safety Analyses must undergo formal Validation and Verification. GRIMHX and TRIMHX are codes used in such a manner. This report summarizes and consolidates the work done to date on the Validation and Verification of these two codes. GRIMHX is a 3-D static reactor code which uses finite difference algorithms to solve the neutron diffusion equation in hex-z geometry. TRIMHX … more

Surveillance of Site A and Plot M : Report for 1989

Description: The results of the environmental monitoring program conducted at Site A/Plot M in the Palos Park Forest Preserve area for CY 1989 are presented. The monitoring program is the ongoing remedial action that resulted from the 1976-1978 radiological characterization of the site. That study had determined that very low levels of hydrogen-3 (as tritiated water) migrated from the burial ground and was present in two nearby hand-pumped picnic wells. The current program consists of sample collection and … more

Strategy for Experimental Validation of Waste Package Performance Assessment

Description: A strategy for the experimental validation of waste package performance assessment has been developed as part of a program supported by the Repository Technology Program. The strategy was developed by reviewing the results of laboratory analog experiments, in-situ tests, repository simulation tests, and material interaction tests. As a result of the review, a listing of dependent and independent variables that influence the ingress of water into the near-field environment, the reaction between … more

Application of the NNWSI [Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations] Unsaturated Test Method to Actinide Doped SRL [Savannah River Laboratory] 165 Type Glass

Description: The results of tests done using the Unsaturated Test Method are presented. These tests, done to determine the suitability of glass in a potential high-level waste repository as developed by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, simulate conditions anticipated for the post-containment phase of the repository when only limited contact between the waste form and water is expected. The reaction of glass occurs via processes that are initiated due to glass/water vapor and glass/li… more

TRUEX Hot Demonstration

Description: In FY 1987, a program was initiated to demonstrate technology for recovering transuranic (TRU) elements from defense wastes. This hot demonstration was to be carried out with solution from the dissolution of irradiated fuels. This recovery would be accomplished with both PUREX and TRUEX solvent extraction processes. Work planned for this program included preparation of a shielded-cell facility for the receipt and storage of spent fuel from commercial power reactors, dissolution of this fuel, op… more

An evaluation of the Nb-93(n,n prime )Nb-93m dosimeter reaction for ENDF/B-VI

Description: The Nb-93(n,n{prime})Nb-93m reaction plays an important role in nuclear energy applications. Because of its low threshold energy and relatively long half-life, it is a desirable reaction for long-term neutron fluence dosimetry in nuclear fission reactors. An evaluation of the differential cross section for this reaction was completed in 1985 by this laboratory as part of a comprehensive effort involving all neutron cross sections for niobium. The objective was to provide input for ENDF/B-VI. It… more

Tritium atmospheric transport and deposition following acute releases: Comparisons with a simple transport model

Description: During 35 years of operation of the Savannah River Site (SRS) there have been a small number of inadvertent tritium releases to the atmosphere. After detection of the releases by stack monitors, field crews were dispatched to determine the concentration of tritium in the environment. The objective of the measurement was to verify environmental concentrations calculated by dose assessment models. Air samples were used to verify the concentration levels and tritium forms during the plume passage.… more

Radiation-induced mesotheliomas in rats

Description: Mesotheliomas have been reported in rats that inhaled plutonium, but these tumors have not been extensively studied. To investigate a possible role for inhaled radionuclides in the induction of mesotheliomas, four life-span studies conducted at the Inhalation Toxicology Research Institute are reviewed. A total of 3076 F344 rats were exposed by inhalation to aerosols of {sup 239}PuO{sub 2}, mixed uranium-plutonium oxide, or {sup 144}CeO{sub 2}. Results showed that a low incidence of pleural meso… more

Tritium distribution in the environment in the vicinity of a chronic atmospheric source-assessment of the steady state hypothesis

Description: The Savannah River Site (SRS) is a major radionuclide production center. Tritium has been released to the atmosphere over the 36 year period of operation. The tritiated water concentration of the atmosphere, rain, vegetation and food have been routinely monitored during this period. Special studies have been made of tritium in soils and in the organic fractions of these same materials. The available data suggest that the average tritium concentration in the components of the terrestrial environ… more

Analysis of soil and water at the Four Mile Creek seepline near the F H Areas of SRS

Description: Until 1988, solutions containing sodium hydroxide, nitride acid, low levels of radionuclides (mostly tritiated water) and some metals were discharged to unlined seepage basins at the F and H Areas of the Savannah River Site (SRS) as part of normal operations (Killian et al, 1987a,b). The basins are now being closed according to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). As part of the closure, a Part B Post-Closure Care Permit is being prepared. Field measurements and assessment of retrievable-stored TRU waste at Savannah River Site

Description: Accountability and nuclear safety concerns arising from uncertainties in Pu-239 loadings of a number of waste containers at SRS were investigated by in situ neutron and gamma-ray measurements and an assessment of risk stemming from past waste analysis and packaging practices. The neutron and gamma measurements largely confirmed the correctness of original waste analysis and accountability, while the risk assessment and measurement implications suggested no present or foreseeable nuclear safety … more
