Exotic signatures from supersymmetry

Description: Minor changes to the standard supersymmetric model, such as soft flavor violation and R parity violation, cause large changes in the signatures. The origin of these changes and the resulting signatures are discussed. 15 refs., 7 figs., 2 tabs.

Intermediate Vector Bosons in the Muon Channel

Description: Description of the W{sup {plus minus}} and Z{sup 0} mass measurement in the muon decay channel, using 4.4 pb{sup {minus}1} of proton-antiproton collision data from the Fermilab Tevatron and CDF. A preliminary result of M{sub w} = 79.9 {plus minus} 0.4 {plus minus} 0.6 GeV/c{sup 2} is presented, and the published values of M{sub z} = 90.9 {plus minus} 0.3 {plus minus} 0.2 GeV/c{sup 2} and {Gamma}{sub z} = 3.8 {plus minus} 1.1 {plus minus} 1.0 GeV/c{sup 2} are described. 8 refs., 5 figs., 6 tabs.

Fragmentation properties of jets produced in proton-antiproton collisions at radical S = 1. 8 TeV

Description: Jet fragmentation properties have been studied in collisions of protons and antiprotons at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV, using the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The fractional momentum distribution of charged particles within jets is presented and compared with Monte-Carlo predictions. With increasing di-jet invariant mass from 60 to 200 GeV/c{sup 2} the fragmentation is observed to soften as predicted by scale breaking effects in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The charged multiplic… more

Recent results from the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) experiment at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider

Description: Recent results from the CDF experiment are described. The Standard Model gives a good description of jet production, and W/Z production and decay. There is no evidence yet for the top quark, for fourth generation quarks, or for deviations from the Standard Model ascribable to quark substructure, supersymmetric particles, or heavy additional W-like or Z-like bosons. Limits are given where applicable. A search for a light Higgs Boson is also described. 11 refs., 24 figs.

B production in hadron collisions: Theory

Description: A review is presented of heavy quark production in {bar p}p, {pi}{sup -}p, and pp interactions at fixed target and collider energies. Calculations of total cross sections and of single quark inclusive differential cross sections d{sup 2}{sigma}/dk{sub T}dy are described including contributions through next-to-leading order in QCD perturbation theory. Comparisons with available data on charm and bottom quark production show good agreement for reasonable values of the charm and bottom quark masse… more

Low energy p p physics

Description: A detailed investigation of proton-antiproton interactions at low energy has become feasible with the commissioning of the LEAR facility in 1983. We shall shortly review the status of {bar p}p annihilation at rest and the physics motivations for second generation experiments with the Crystal Barrel detector. This type of detector would be adequate for the study of both Kp and {bar p}p interactions on an extracted beam of the KAON Factory. We shall conclude with a few remarks on the physics oppo… more

Electron identification in the CDF (Collider Detector at Fermilab) central calorimeter

Description: Efficient identification of electrons both from W decay and QCD heavy flavour production has been achieved with the CDF Central Calorimeter, which is a lead -- scintillator plate calorimeter incorporating tower geometry. The fine calorimetry granularity (0.1 /times/ 0.26 in /eta/, /phi/ space) allows identification of electrons well within the typical jet cone and is wholly sufficient for the measurement of the isolation of electrons from W decay. With minor improvements, such a detector is a r… more

Hadron collider physics at Fermilab

Description: The hadron collider physics program at Fermilab, Tevatron-I, has recently provided considerable data samples to two high beta experiments as well as one low beta general purpose Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A brief description of the Tevatron collider and the high beta experiments is followed by a discussion of hard scattering results from CDF. The prospects for growth in this exciting physics program are outlined. 20 refs., 29 figs., 1 tab.

A missing transverse energy analysis of 1. 8 TeV /bar p/-p collisions observed at CDF

Description: We summarize a missing transverse energy analysis of 25.3 nb/sup /minus/1/ of /bar p/-p collision data taken with the CDF detector during its 1987 run. With this analysis we excluded supersymmetric squarks of mass less than 73 GeV, and supersymmetric gluinos of mass less than 74 GeV at the 90% CL. We then present a preliminary missing transverse energy analysis of 1 pb/sup /minus/1/ of proton-antiproton collision data at c.m. energy of 1.8 TeV observed by the CDF detector during the 1988--1989 … more

The CDF direct photon analysis

Description: Using data from /bar p/p collisions observed in the CDF detector at /radical/s of 1.8TeV, a sample of events are selected which have calorimetry and tracking consistent with a single isolated photon produced in the central rapidity range (/minus/.9< /eta/ <.9) with P/sub T/ >15GeV. In the P/sub T/ range below 30GeV, the lateral shape of the shower measured at 6 radiation lengths is used to evaluate the fraction of events which are actually isolated neutral hadrons. The photon cross section vers… more

/bar p/p collider physics

Description: This note encompasses a set of six lectures given at the summer school held at Campos Do Jordao in January of 1989 near Sao Paulo, Brazil. The intent of the lectures was to describe the physics of /bar p/p at CERN and Fermilab. Particular attention has been paid to making a self contained presentation to a prospective audience of graduate students. Since large Monte Carlo codes might not be available to all members of this audience, great reliance was placed on ''back of the envelope estimates.… more

Jets, W's, and Z's at radical s = 1. 8 TeV

Description: Jet production and electroweak vector boson production have been observed in proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The inclusive jet cross section has been measured for jets up to transverse energies of 400 GeV, and is compared to QCD predictions. W and Z particle production has been observed and studies of their masses are described. 3 refs., 4 figs.

Jet Production in the Central Rapidity Region in 1.8 TeV Proton and Antiproton Collisions

Description: In this thesis we study the jet production cross section in the central rapidity region in {bar p}p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The pseudo-rapidity {eta} is defined as {eta} {triple_bond} -ln(tan({theta}/2)), where {theta} is the angle between the directions of the jet momentum and the proton beam. We will call the region -0.7 < {eta} < 0.7 the 'central rapidity' region by definition. The goal of this thesis is to determine two kinds of differential cross sections fo… more

A new Tevatron Collider working point near the integer

Description: It is well established that in hadron colliders the beam-beam interaction is more harmful in the presence of machine resonances of the form m{nu}{sub x} + n{nu}{sub y} = p, where {vert bar}m{vert bar} + {vert bar}n{vert bar} is the order of the resonance. Since the closest a resonance line can be to the integer stopband is 1/order, the closer the working point is to the integer, the fewer lower order resonances there are to enhance the beam-beam effects. A shift of the working point of the Teva… more

Log(s) physics results from CDF

Description: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is a large, azimuthally symmetric detector designed to study {bar p}p interactions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Results are presented from data taken with a minimum bias trigger at {radical}s = 630 and 1800 GeV during the 1987 run. The topics include the current analysis of dn/d{eta} and some very preliminary results on short range pseudorapidity correlations and Bose-Einstein correlations. 7 refs., 5 figs., 2 tabs.
