Weathering effects on the structure and reactivity of US coals: Final report, July 15, 1984-July 14, 1987. [Many data]

Description: This report covers the work performed from July 1984 to July 1987 under the project entitled ''Weathering Effects on Structure and Reactivity of US Coals'' (grant number FG22-84PC70798). The main objectives of the study were to investigate the structural changes in coal during the weathering process as well as to develop a simple, reliable weathering index, which can monitor indirectly the weathering-induced changes in physical and chemical properties. Although there have been numerous publicat… more

Investigation of sorption interactions between organic and mineral phases of processed oil shale

Description: Minerals and organic compounds representative of oil shale processing wastes were analyzed for potential sorption interactions. The analysis consisted of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography, thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry, and laser Raman spectroscopy. Montmorillonite clay was used as a representative of the smectites found in raw and spent shales, and hematite was used as a representative of iron oxide found in spent shales. … more

Active sites in char gasification: Final technical report

Description: Among the key variables in the design of gasifiers and combustors is the reactivity of the chars which must be gasified or combusted. Significant loss of unburned char is unacceptable in virtually any process; the provision of sufficient residence time for complete conversion is essential. A very wide range of reactivities are observed, depending upon the nature of the char in a process. The current work focuses on furthering the understanding of gasification reactivities of chars. It has been … more

Sequential low-temperature depolymerization and liquefaction of US coals

Description: The application of the method to the oil fraction of a product obtained from BS(IL) coal by sequential HT-BCD (see Progress Report no. (1)) is given in Figure 8 (A and B). The latter summarize the structural parameters derived for the oil fraction of the depolymerized BS(IL) coal product obtained by HT at 290[degree]C followed by BCD at 290[degree]C. The data derived on the basis of the analytical results show an average molecular formula C[sub 22.6]H[sub 29.1]O[sub 3.0]N[sub 0.24] for this fra… more

Gas-phase thermal dissociation of uranium hexafluoride: Investigation by the technique of laser-powered homogeneous pyrolysis

Description: In the gas-phase, uranium hexafluoride decomposes thermally in a quasi-unimolecular reaction to yield uranium pentafluoride and atomic fluorine. We have investigated this reaction using the relatively new technique of laser-powered homogeneous pyrolysis, in which a megawatt infrared laser is used to generate short pulses of high gas temperatures under strictly homogeneous conditions. In our investigation, SiF/sub 4/ is used as the sensitizer to absorb energy from a pulsed CO/sub 2/ laser and to… more

Investigation of technology for monitoring UF/sub 6/ mass flow

Description: The applicability of gas flow meters, in-line enrichment monitors, and instruments for measuring uranium or UF/sub 6/ concentrations in process streams as a means for verifying declared plant throughput have been investigated. The study was performed to assist the International Atomic Energy Agency in the development of an effective international safeguards approach for aerodynamic uranium enrichment plants. Because the process gas in an aerodynamic enrichment facility is a mixture of UF/sub 6/… more
