Neutron scattering of transuranium materials

Description: A number of neutron experiments on transuranium materials are reviewed. Purpose of these experiments, which range from studies of crystal fields in the oxides to excitations in PuSb, is to increase our understanding of the 5f electron behavior across the first half of the actinide series. Comparisons are made with the more familiar uranium analogues.

Anomalous dimensions of multiquark bound states

Description: The evolution of six-quark color-singlet state distribution amplitudes is formulated as an application of perturbative quantum chromodynamics to nuclear wave functions. We present a general method of solving the evolution equation for multiquark bound states and predict the asymptotic Q/sup 2/ slope for the deuteron charge form factor as a result.

Three-body force in the three-nucleon system

Description: A brief summary of the symposium is presented. Three-nucleon force models are discussed, including the two-pion exchange potential, NN-..delta..N coupled-channels model, and phenomenological parametrization. Relevant experimental data and model calculations are discussed including form factors, binding energies, charge radii, and charge density for /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He. A calculation of the EMC effect for /sup 3/He is also made using Sasakawa's wave function and compared to experimental data … more

Nuclear physics with internal targets in electron storage rings

Description: Two key experiments in nuclear physics will be discussed in order to illustrate the advantages of the internal target method and demonstrate the power of polarization techniques in electron scattering studies. The progress of internal target experiments will be discussed and the technology of internal polarized target development will be reviewed. 43 refs., 11 figs.

Medium energy hadron scattering from nuclei

Description: The Glauber approximation for medium energy scattering of hadronic projectiles from nuclei is combined with the interacting boson model of nuclei to produce a transition matrix for elastic and inelastic scattering in algebraic form which includes coupling to all the intermediate states. We present closed form analytic expresions for the transition matrix elements for the three dynamical symmetries of the interacting boson model; that is for, a spherical quadrupole vibrator, a ..gamma.. unstable… more

Calculation of electromagnetic observables in few-body systems

Description: An introduction to the calculation of electromagnetic observables in few-body systems is given by studying two examples in the trinucleon system: (1) the elastic electron scattering charge form factor in configuration space and momentum space and (2) the two-body photodisintegration of /sup 3/H leading to a neutron-deuteron final state in a separable potential formalism. In the discussion of charge form factor calculations, a number of related topics are touched upon: the relation of structure … more

Comparison of quasielastic scattering nu/sub. mu. /N. -->. mu. /sup -/P and. delta. /sup + +/ production reaction nu/sub. mu. /p. -->. mu. /sup -/. delta. /sup + +/ in the BNL 7-foot deuterium bubble chamber

Description: The neutrino quasielastic and delta-1232 production in nu/sub ..mu../d ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/pp and nu/sub ..mu../d ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/..delta../sup + +/n interactions have been studied using high statistics data obtained from a bubble chamber experiment at Brookhaven. Results on a detailed study of the axial form factor in these reactions are presented. In particular, assuming the dipole axial form factor, the behavior of the axial-vector mass is examined from the Q/sup 2/ distributions for t… more

Relativistic Equations

Description: In the last 3 years I have given several talks on relativistic equations for nuclear physics, and on relativistic; effects in few nucleon systems. In preparing for these talks, and in responding to the discussion which followed them, my thinking about relativistic equations and relativistic effects has gradually evolved. I want to begin this talk by focusing on several issues which naturally arise when discussing this subject, and then turn to a brief discussion of relativistic three nucleon eq… more

First observation of the decay. pi. /sup +/. -->. e/sup +/e/sup -/e/sup +/. nu. and a determination of the form factors F/sub V/, F/sub A/ and R

Description: The radiative pion decay ..pi../sup +/ ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/e/sup +/..nu.. has been observed for the first time with a branching ratio of (3.4 +- 0.5) x 10/sup -9/. From the kinematical distribution of 79 events information on the form factors was extracted. The vector form factor F/sub V/ was found to have the same sign as the pion decay constant f/sub ..pi../. For the axial-vector form factors the following values have been measured: ..gamma.. = F/sub A//F/sub V/ = 0.7 +- 0.5 and xi = R/F/… more

Electrodisintegration of few body systems at SLAC and the Y scaling approach

Description: It is proposed that extraction of the scaling function F(y) from the transverse and longitudinal response functions in inclusive quasi-elastic electron scattering from /sup 3/He and /sup 4/He is a powerful method to either study the validity regime of the impulse approximation by allowing the access to the high nucleon momentum components in these nuclei, or the electromagnetic properties of bound nucleons. 19 refs., 4 figs.

Excited baryons

Description: The status of the theory of the low-energy approach to hadron structure is reviewed briefly by surveying a few relevant models. A few examples of tests needed to sort out the predictions of different models pertaining to the quark-gluon structure of hadrons are discussed, and given the resulting physics objectives, a few experimental options for excited baryon research at CFBAF are suggested. Sigma minus form factors and magnetic moment

Description: We report results from a Fermilab polarized Sigma minus decay experiment. From a sample of 50,000 beta decays and 10/sup 6/ two body decays with polarization parallel to the magnetic field we have extracted the semi-leptonic form factors. From another sample of 21,000 beta decays and 650,000 two body decays where the polarization precessed in the magnetic field we have measured the magnetic moment.

Description: This work was motivated by four goals: (1) by working in configuration space, where intuition is greatest, investigate graphically those trinucleon properties which are determined by specific features of wave functions; (2) produce benchmark calculations against which new techniques and numerical methods can be measured; (3) investigate the effect of the Coulomb interaction between the two protons in /sup 3/He and in the p-d system; (4) systematically investigate the various trinucleon observab… more
