Technical Area 55 Entry Control System (ECS). [Plutonium facilities]

Description: The exchange badge system which was used at the Plutonium Facility located in Technical Area 55 was replaced on a trial basis with an automated Entry Control System. As a result of the success of the trial system, a new system incorporating expanded features and increased reliability is being implemented. The new Entry Control System incorporates several features not previously available in relatively inexpensive entry systems. The reliability of the system is enhanced by redundant microprocess… more

Efficient forward conversion in a Raman generator

Description: Stimulated Raman scattering of an XeCl laser at 308 nm in a high pressure H/sub 2/ cell shows anomalously high conversion into first Stokes (S1) when a pumping geometry with a Fresnel number near unity is used. Specifically a quantum efficiency of 88% is obtained into S1. Comparison with a plane-wave model indicates that a theory including diffraction and 4-wave mixing may be necessary to understand the anomalous holdoff of the second Stokes component. 10 references.

Transport, stability and relaxation of a spheromak

Description: We consider a zero-..beta.. spheromak contained in a rectangular region having perfectly conducting boundaries in its minimum energy state, and we calculate its evolution. Our results may be summarized as follows. Since this state is a stable equilibrium, the initial evolution of the plasma is caused by diffusion. We simulate this using a transport code. We find that q at the magnetic axis drops and q(r) becomes flat. When q on axis drops below 0.5, the spheromak becomes unstable to an n = 2 ki… more

Recent results on the FRC transport

Description: Some recent transport studies of field-reversed configurations (FRC) during their equilibrium phase are presented. The FRC confinement times of interest tau/sub N/, tau/sub E/, and tau/ sub phi/ are for particles, energy, and trapped-flux, respectively. An analytical expression for tau/sub N/ based on Lower-Hybrid-Drift (LHD) resistivity is presented. Some progress in assessing the respective contributions of radiation and thermal conduction to tau/sub E/ is given. Finally, the relation tau/sub… more

TRAC-PF1: an advanced best-estimate computer program for pressurized water reactor analysis

Description: The Transient Reactor Analysis Code (TRAC) is being developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory to provide advanced best-estimate predictions of postulated accidents in light water reactors. The TRAC-PF1 program provides this capability for pressurized water reactors and for many thermal-hydraulic experimental facilities. The code features either a one-dimensional or a three-dimensional treatment of the pressure vessel and its associated internals; a two-phase, two-fluid nonequilibrium hydr… more

Coaxial slow source: a quasi-static FRC formation concept

Description: The electromagnetics of one of several techniques for generating FRCs in a coaxial configuration has been presented. It has been shown that the discussed design satisfies all the electromagnetic requirements for a slow source. The next major issue is the investigation of the plasma physics which will ultimately determine the viability of this concept.

Criterion for quasibrittle crack growth

Description: An expression to predict the onset of growth of a crack in a quasibrittle material is derived. An energy criterion essentially equivalent to the first two laws of thermodynamics is employed. The criterion is applied to the elastic-plastic crack of Olesiak and Wnuk (1968). 12 references, 3 figures. (ACR)

One-dimensional transport code for field-reversed configurations

Description: A radial transport code for Field-Reversed Configurations (FRCs) is described. Assuming quasi-neutrality and neglecting inertia and viscous force, the evolution of particle densities, temperatures, and magnetic field through a series of equilibrium states is simulated. To solve the equations, transformations of all dependent variables and the one independent variable are carried out. The processes of interest can be decoupled into two distinctive sets of equations that describe adiabatic and no… more

Ir/PuO/sub 2/ compatibility: transfer of impurities from plutonium dioxide to iridium metal during high temperature aging

Description: Plutonium oxide fuel pellets for powering radioisotopic thermoelectric generators for NASA space vehicles are encapsulated in iridium which has been grain-boundary-stabilized with thorium and aluminum. After aging for 6 months at 1310/sup 0/C under vacuum, enhanced grain growth is observed in the near-surface grains of the iridium next to the PuO/sub 2/. Examination of the grain boundaries by AES and SIMS shows a depletion of thorium and aluminum. Iron, chromium, and nickel from the fuel were f… more

Economics of a conceptual 75 MW Hot Dry Rock geothermal electric power station

Description: Man-made, Hot Dry Rock (HDR) geothermal energy reservoirs have been investigated for over ten years. As early as 1977 a research-sized reservoir was created at a depth of 2.9 km near the Valles Caldera, a dormant volcanic complex in New Mexico, by connecting two wells with hydraulic fractures. Thermal power was generated at rates of up to 5 MW(t) and the reservoir was operated for nearly a year with a thermal drawdown less than 10/sup 0/C. A small 60kW(e) electrical generation unit using a bina… more

Interaction of the neutral deuterium flux with a field-reversed configuration

Description: Recycling effects arising from the penetration of cold neutrals into a hot plasma has been known to contribute to confinement properties of tokamaks, mirrors, RFPs, and spheromaks. To data, however, ionization and charge exchange processes associated with the possible influx of neutrals have been neglected in FRC transport models, or their effects have been found negligible for experiments with short lifetimes (< 20 ..mu..s). These processes are also neglected when ascertaining the experimental… more

Nonlinear optics: where do we go from here

Description: Nonlinear optics deals with induced polarizations which are not proportional to the input fields. This topic includes the spontaneous scattering of light waves by elementary excitations such as sound waves, plasma waves, heat waves, molecular vibrations (the Raman effect), spin waves, and a host of others; such spontaneous scatterings do not rely on the brightness of the probe light source, and therefore many of these topics were understood well before the invention of the laser. The laser did … more

First, we report on the second 425-MHz RFQ for H/sup -/ acceleration, which is being built in a research effort to understand and further develop the RFQ. Second, we discuss progress on the 80-MHz cw RFQ for deuterons, which is being built for the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) facility.

Nevada test site fallout atom ratios: /sup 240/Pu//sup 239/Pu and /sup 241/Pu//sup 239/Pu

Description: The exposure of the population in Utah to external gamma radiation from the fallout from nuclear weapons tests carried out between 1951 and 1958 at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been reconstructed from recent measurements of /sup 137/Cs and plutonium in soil. The fraction of /sup 137/Cs in the fallout from NTS events was calculated from the total plutonium and the /sup 240/Pu//sup 239/Pu ratios measured in the soil, using the values of 0.180 +- 0.006 and 0.032 +- 0.003 for that ratio in global… more

Processing of oil shale in molten hydroxides

Description: Scoping experiments to determine bounds on a possible process for producing fuel hydrocarbons from oil shale by pyrolysis in a bath of molten Na, Li, and K hydroxides have been done. The process can be carried out at relatively low temperatures, 200 to 225/sup 0/C, requires the presence of water and oxygen, and gives hydrocarbon and organic acid products, apparently free of sulfur and nitrogen. A mechanism of oxidation of kerogen at heteroatoms and other functional groups, followed by decarboxy… more
