Polishing Methods for Metallic and Ceramic Transmission Electron Microscopy Specimens

Description: "In recent years, the increasing sophistication of transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies of materials has necessitated more exacting methods of specimen preparation. The present report describes improved equipment and techniques for electropolishing and chemically polishing a wide variety of specimens. Many of the specimens used in developing or improving the techniques to be described were irradiated with heavy ions such as nickel or vanadium to study radiation damage. The high cost o… more

EBIC/TEM investigations of process-induced defects in EFG silicon ribbon

Description: EBIC and STEM observations on unprocessed and processed EFG ribbon show that the phosphorus diffused junction depth is not uniform, and that a variety of chemical impurities precipitate out during processing. Two kinds of precipitates are found: (1) 10 nm or less in size, located at the dislocation nodes in sub-boundary like dislocation arrangements formed during processing and (2) large precipitates, the chemical composition of which has been partially identified. These large precipitates emit… more

TEM study of neutron-irradiated iron

Description: Results of a transmission electron microscopy study of the defect structure in iron neutron-irradiated to low fluences (less than or equal to 1 dpa) at temperatures of 455 to 1013/sup 0/K are presented. The dislocation microstructures coarsen with increasing irradiation temperature from decorated dislocations, through clusters of dislocation loops, to near-edge, interstitial dislocation loops with b = a<100>, and network segments. Significant cavity formation occurred only at 548 to 723/sup 0/K… more

Depth distribution of 2-keV helium-ion irradiation-induced cavities in nickel

Description: Transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the effect of total dose on the depth distribution of cavities (voids or bubbles) in nickel irradiated at 500/sup 0/C with 20-keV /sup 4/He/sup +/ ions. A transverse sectioning technique allowed us to obtain the entire depth distribution of cavities from a single specimen. The diameter, number density and volume fraction of cavities were measured as a function of depth from micrographs taken from samples sectioned parallel to the direction… more

Quantitative comparison of the void distribution in a. beta. '-phase Ni-Al-In alloy using x-ray small-angle scattering and transmission-electron microscopy. [Ni-51. 2 at. % Al-2. 6 at. % In]

Description: Small-angle scattering is a rather mature discipline which can yield valuable information on the size, amount, and distribution of inhomogeneities encountered in materials-science research. Methods have been publisheed which permit one to extend the standard analysis of data from a small-angle-scattering experiment to include determination of the distribution of particle sizes. This extended analysis has been carried out for voids in a ..beta..'-phase Ni-Al-In alloy, and, in order to assess the… more

EBIC and HVTEM studies of RTR silicon ribbon

Description: The defect structure of RTR ribbon No. 6-731, run 803 was studied by CTEM, EBIC and HVTEM. Prior to laser recrystallization the defect structure consists of closely spaced twin and grain boundaries. Precipitation of impurities occurs after laser recrystallization. The observation of electrically active defects in EBIC has been correlated with HVTEM studies Pairs of electrically active defects in twin boundaries are due to stacking faults connecting the twin boundaries.

Rapidly solidified long-range-ordered alloys. [(Fe, Co, Ni)/sub 3/V]

Description: The influence of rapid solidification processing on the microstructure of long-range-ordered alloys in the (Fe, Co, Ni)/sub 3/ V system has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The main microstructural feature of the as-quenched alloys was a fine cell structure (approx. 300 nm diameter) decorated with carbide particles. This structure was maintained aftr annealing treatments which develop the ordered crystal structure. Other features of the microstructures both before and after ann… more

Study of solid metal/ceramic reactions. Progress report, March 17, 1980-January 15, 1981

Description: This study is concerned with the solid state reactions between silicon-based structural ceramics and a simple model superalloy. During this past year, considerable effort was devoted to phase identification using microprobe, x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analyis techniques. The relatively simple Si-C-Ni-Cr-Al system was found to be even more complex than anticipated, with at least 14 individual phases identi… more

Secondary Grain-boundary Dislocations in (001) Twist Boundaries in MgO. II. Extrinsic Structures

Description: Extrinsic secondary grain boundary dislocation (GBD) structures were observed by weak beam transmission electron microscopy in a variety of (001) twist boundaries in MgO. These structures were derived from segments of lattice dislocations embedded in the boundaries and could be interpreted as the result of the decomposition of the lattice dislocations into extrinsic GBDs and the subsequent interaction of the product GBDs with the intrinsic boundary structure. The results demonstrate that lattic… more

Cadmium sulfide/copper sulfide heterojunction cell research. Critical studies in materials and durability. Annual progress report, July 1, 1979-August 31, 1980

Description: A summary of the structural and morphological features of CdS and (CdZn)S layers and their heterojunctions with Cu/sub 2/S is presented. The growth of the Cu/sub 2/S layer has been studied as a function of time for both the solution and solid state process using transmission electron microscopy. Preliminary observations have also been made on vapor and sputter deposited Cu/sub 2/S layers. The effect of oxidation and reduction heat treatments on the optical properties of Cu/sub 2/S are reported.… more
