Implementation of the engineering safeguards program (ESP) into nuclear fuel recycle facilities

Description: The principal objective of ORNL-ESP is to demonstrate process monitoring as it might be accomplished by inspectors of any nuclear fuel recycle facility. Improved instrumentation and computer interfacing, currently being installed, provide the ORNL /sup 233/U Pilot Plant with the capability of a dynamic volume balance in the solvent extraction system. Later, an accurate, (almost) instantaneous fissile mass balance will be routinely obtainable in the Pilot Plant. Subsidiary objectives include min… more

Coal liquefaction. Quarterly report, October-December 1978

Description: DOE's program for the conversion of coal to liquid fuels was begun by two of DOE's predecessor agencies: Office of Coal Research (OCR) in 1962, and ERDA. The Bureau of Mines, US Department of the Interior, had started work in the 1930's. Current work is aimed at improved process configurations for both catalytic and noncatalytic processes to provide more attractive processing economics and lower capital investment. The advantage of coal liquefaction is that the entire range of liquid products, … more

Continuous Czochralski growth: silicon sheet growth development of the large area silicon sheet task of the Low Cost Silicon Solar Array Project. Second annual progress report, October 1-September 30, 1979

Description: The purpose of this program is to demonstrate the growth of at least 100 kilograms of mono crystalline ingot from one crucible by the Czochralski (CZ) method. The approach to the continuous growth process being pursued in this effort relies on conventional CZ technology combined with new equipment designs which allow repeated alternate cycles of crystal growth and hot melt replenishment by methods which are suitable for use in a high volume production facility. A Hamco Model CG2000 crystal grow… more

1979 New Mexico legislative session: energy issues and legislation. [WIPP]

Description: This report is an account of the energy legislation and associated issues considered during the 1979 session of the 34th New Mexico Legislature. The session's major issue was the federal study of a proposed nuclear Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. A large proportion of time and effort was spent on resolving the state's formal position toward the federal project. However, other energy concerns were also significant even though they were neither as controversial nor as visible as… more
