Role of deep inelastic processes in nuclear physics: experimental and theoretical aspects of deep inelastic reactions. [Mass asymmetry, diffusion, charge and angular distributions, energy and momentum transfer]

Description: The collective modes excited in deep-inelastic reactions and their natural hierarchy provided by their characteristic relaxation times is described. The relaxation of the mass asymmetry mode is discussed in terms of a diffusion process. Charge distributions and angular distributions as a function of Z calculated with this model are in good agreement with experimental data. This diffusion model also treats the transfer of energy and angular momentum in terms of particle transfer, and is successf… more

Parity violation in deep inelastic electron scattering. [19. 4 to 22. 2 GeV]

Description: Neutral currents in electron scattering and the Weinberg-Salam model are reviewed. This generally accepted model is consistent with experimental results from neutrino interactions; an appropriate deep inelastic electron scattering experiment would measure couplings that don't involve neutrinos to see if they are also correctly described by the theory. The SLAC-Yale experiment measures a difference in the e-d inelastic cross section for right- and left-handed electrons. The polarized source, bea… more

Further tests of parity violation in inelastic electron scattering. [16. 2 to 22. 2 GeV, y = 0. 15 to 0. 36]

Description: Further measurements of parity-violating asymmetries in inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from deuterium were made for a range of y values from 0.15 to 0.36. Only a small y-dependemce was observed in the asymmetries. Using the quark-parton model, these results are in good agreement with the Weinberg-Salam predictions. A value of the parameter sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/ = 0.224 +- 0.020 was obtained. 4 figures.

Parity nonconservation in polarized electron scattering at high energies

Description: Recent observations of parity violation in inelastic scattering of electrons at high energy is discussed with reference to the process e(polarized) + D(unpolarized) ..-->.. e + X. The kinetics of this process, the idealized case of scattering from free quark targets, experimental techniques and results, and relations to atomic physics of parity violation in bismuth and thallium atoms with a model independent analysis. 17 references. Search for parity-violating contributions to scattering of hadrons. [800 MeV, preliminary results helicity, asymmetry]

Description: The study of parity violation is, at present, the only means of studying the weak nonleptonic strangness conserving nucleon-nucleon force at medium energies. The experiment is a search for parity nonconservation in p-nucleus scattering by observing a change in the total cross section as the helicity of the incident protons is reversed. A nonvanishing helicity dependent cross section, A = (sigma/sub +/ - sigma/sub -//sigma/sub +/ + sigma/sub -/) would imply the presence of a parity-violating int… more

Angular momentum and the collective modes excited in deep-inelastic processes and in fission. [288 MeV]

Description: The angular momentum effects in deep inelastic processes and fission were studied in the limit of statistical equilibrium. The model consists of two touching liquid drop spheres. Angular momentum fractionation was found to occur along the mass asymmetry coordinate. Thermal excitation of fragment spin is predicted to occur in the degrees of freedom which can bear angular momentum, like wriggling, tilting, bending, and twisting. 17 references.

Further measurements of parity non-conservation in inelastic electron scattering. [16. 2 to 22. 2 GeV]

Description: Measurements of the y-dependence of the parity nonconserving asymmetries for inelastic electron scattering from deuterium. The measurements cover a range of y values from 0.15 to 0.36 and show only a small y-dependence. The results are in good agreement with the Weinberg-Salam model for sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/ = 0.224 +- 0.020. 20 references.

Weak neutral current: a determination of its structure and an analysis of the error due to theoretical and experimental uncertainties

Description: The most recently available neutral current data, together with previous measurements, was used to determine in a model independent way the structure of the hadronic and leptonic neutral currents. In the theoretical treatment of ..nu.. deep inelastic scattering, the effects of quantum chromodynamics, including the contribution of s and c quarks were evaluated. 64 references. (JFP)

Neutral hydrogen from the foil-induced dissociation of /sup 4/HeH/sup +/, /sup 3/HeH/sup +/, and H/sub 2//sup +/. [170 to 1800 keV/amu]

Description: High resolution energy spectra and angular distributions of H/sup 0/ from the dissociation of /sup 4/HeH/sup +/, /sup 3/HeH/sup +/, and H/sub 2//sup +/ in thin carbon foils are presented for incident ion energies ranging from 170 to 1800 keV/amu. For the range of dwell times inside the target foils studied (about 1 to 10 fsec), the dominant mechanism for such dissociation is the Coulomb explosion of the ions inside the target followed by electron capture near the rear surface of the foil. At th… more

QUARTZ: a numerical simulation of an asymmetric electrostatic accelerator

Description: The physics and numerical aspects of the development of the computer code QUARTZ are given. This code includes the (1) use of a finite element code to obtain solutions of Poisson's equation in an asymmetric, three-dimensional volume; (2) inclusion of space charge neutralization by electrons; and (3) inclusion of ion space charge through an iterative procedure. Fast numerical calculations of ion-atom collisions

Description: When an ion impinges on an atom, the cross sections for electronic transitions can be described in the independent electron model by functions of single electron amplitudes. A single centered expansion of the time-dependent wave function of an electron about the heavier nucleus, with charge Z/sub N/, is shown to be moderately successful in explaining the dependence of K-shell hole production on the charge, Z/sub p/, of the projectile. However, capture of electrons by the projectile is important… more

Charge symmetry breaking in the neutron proton system

Description: Two consequences of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in the n-p system are examined. In n-p elastic scattering, CSB nuclear forces cause a difference between the polarizations of the neutron and the proton scattered in opposite directions in the center of mass system. The expected differences in polarizations due to one boson exchanges, particularly a photon exchange, isospin mixed mesons, and a pion (with the n-p mass difference taken into account), are computed. The calculated polarization diff… more

Polarization Asymmetries in e/sup +/e/sup -/ Inclusive Hadron Production

Description: Interference effects between electromagnetic and weak interactions in e/sup +/e/sup -/ hadronic production, which are free from higher order QED corrections, are considered. In particular the asymmetry between the cross sections is calculated when one of the beams is longitudinally polarized positvely and negatively, the other unpolarized. This asymmetry is then parity non-conserving. Numerical results are given for total hadronic cross sections, and for ..pi.., K/sup - +/ , D/sup - +/ inclusiv… more
