NO/sub 2/ levels in diesel exhaust

Description: The safe operation of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines is predicated on there being sufficient ventilation to dilute the exhaust such that none of the toxicants in the dilute mixture exceed allowable levels. In order to determine the ventilation requirement for an engine, it is necessary to measure levels of the various toxicants in the exhaust. Measurements in the past typically either have excluded nitrogen dioxide or have not provided information on nitrogen dioxide specifically… more

Investigative study of engine limiting

Description: An experimental study was conducted to determine the effect of cylinder cut-out or ''engine limiting'' on fuel consumption and exhaust emissions for a current technology V-type 8-cylinder engine. Increases in energy conversion efficiency while operating with only 4 cylinders ranged from 10 to 40% compared to operation with 8 cylinders at the same power outputs. The speeds and loads chosen were representative of those required to operate a 4,500-lb vehicle at speeds up to 60 mph. Hydrocarbon emi… more

Radiolytic gas production from concrete containing Savannah River Plant waste

Description: To determine the extent of gas production from radiolysis of concrete containing radioactive Savannah River Plant waste, samples of concrete and simulated waste were irradiated by /sup 60/Co gamma rays and /sup 244/Cm alpha particles. Gamma radiolysis simulated radiolysis by beta particles from fission products in the waste. Alpha radiolysis indicated the effect of alpha particles from transuranic isotopes in the waste. With gamma radiolysis, hydrogen was the only significant product; hydrogen … more

NO/sub x/ emissions from Hanford nuclear fuels reprocessing plants

Description: Operation of the existing Hanford nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities will increase the release of nitrogen oxides (NO/sub x/) to the atmosphere over present emission rates. Stack emissions from two reprocessing facilities, one waste storage facility and two coal burning power plants will contain increased concentrations of NO/sub x/. The opacity of the reprocessing facilities' emissions is predicted to periodically exceed the State and local opacity limit of twenty percent. Past measurem… more

National Coal Utilization Assessment: a preliminary assessment of coal utilizaton in the South. [Southern USA to 2020; forecasting]

Description: Some of the major problems and issues related to coal development and use in the South are identified and assessed assuming a base-case energy scenario for the next 45 years. This scenario assumes a midrange of coal use and a relatively high rate of nuclear use over the forecast period. The potential impacts from coal development and use are significant, particularly in the 1990-2020 time period. Practically all available sites suitable for power plant development in the assessment will be util… more

Evaluation of the HEPA filter in-place test method in a corrosive off-gas environment

Description: Experiments were performed to determine if the combined effects of temperature, humidity, and oxides of nitrogen (NO/sub x/) hinder the in-place testing of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters used for cleaning the off-gas from a nuclear waste solidification facility. The laboratory system that was designed to simulate the process off-gas contained two HEPA filters in series with sample ports before each filter and after the filter bank. The system also included a reaction bomb for pa… more

Health and environmental impacts of fluidized-bed combustion of coal

Description: The findings of the study regarding major areas of impact are summarized on a comparative basis. The results depend on many assumptions. They are also dependent on current engineering designs and proposed methods for handling and treating wastes. These aspects could change as the technology for the FBC is developed and are dependent on costs and on the competitive position of the technology. The relative competitive positions among the technologies are unknown, as all of the options appear capa… more

Environmental monitoring report for Pantex Plant covering 1977

Description: During 1977 Pantex Plant conducted a monitoring program to determine the concentration of specific radioactive and non-radioactive species in the local environment. Although the plant activities involve the handling of significant quantities of uranium, plutonium, and tritium, only small releases of uranium (depleted in the isotope /sup 235/U) and tritium occurred which could have affected the local environment. Monitoring data indicate that concentrations of these nuclides in the environment a… more

Description: Appearance rate constants of molecular photochemical products were measured following laser photolysis of formaldehyde in the near ultraviolet. The pressure dependence of appearance rates was studied for three formaldehyde isotopic species: H/sub 2/CO, HDCO, and D/sub 2/CO. The effect of added foreign gases on those rates in H/sub 2/CO has been determined for He, Ar, Xe, and NO. The energy dependence of photodissociation rates has been examined following laser photolysis at 354.7 and 299.1 nm a… more

Nitrogen oxide absorption into water and dilute nitric acid in an engineering-scale sieve-plate column with plates designed for high gas-liquid interfacial area

Description: The absorption of gaseous NO/sub x/ compounds into water and dilute HNO/sub 3/ was studied in a three-stage sieve-plate column with plates designed for high gas-liquid interfacial area. The performance of the column was measured while several operating parameters were varied. The results of the study indicate the importance of three mechanisms in the absorption of gaseous NO/sub x/ (NO/sub 2/ + 2N/sub 2/O4 + NO) compounds: (1) the absorption of NO/sub 2//sup */ (NO/sub 2/ + 2N/sub 2/O4) which r… more

The engine types used were: (1) current technology spark-ignition, homogeneous charge, (2) stratified-charge, and (3) Stirling. There were no significant changes in fuel consumption or exhaust emissions between syncrude-derived fuels and conventional fuels in stratified-charge and Stirling engines. Effects of a massive pulse injection of NO/sub x/ into the stratosphere

Description: Recent measurements of chemical reaction rates have greatly reduced the modeled sensitivity of stratospheric ozone toward injections of NO/sub x/ (NO/sub x/ = NO + NO/sub 2/) in amounts comparable to the natural NO/sub x/ inventory. Most of this reduced effect results from interference between NO/sub x/ and HO/sub x/ catalytic ozone destruction mechanisms. For very large NO/sub x/ injections (such as might be generated from a major nuclear exchange involving devices of greater than one megaton … more
