Research in radiation monitoring survey instrumentation. Final report

Description: Two low-power solid-state prototype readout units were developed, an LED display and a LCD display. This display output was in a bar-graph format, covering four-decades of information, with 10-segments per decade. The displays accept a frequency input, which is standardly available from several portable radiation-survey instruments. Both readout units will operate on two D-cell batteries (3.0 Volt), with a typical current drain requirement of 0.3 MA for the LED display and 30..mu..A for the LCD… more

EBR-II Environmental Instrumented Subassembly XX08 : Engineering and Assembly

Description: Subassembly XX08 is a fueled and instrumented subassembly designed primarily for an ongoing program to investigate the thermal-hydraulic core environment within EBR-II under normal and off-normal plant operating conditions. XX08 contains 58-xenon-tagged, EBR-II Mark-II driver-fuel elements. The Mark-II fuel is expected to provide XX08 with an irradiation lifetime three times as great as that attained with its predecessor, XX07, i.e., a 9 versus 2.9% burnup. A burnup of 9 at.% is equivalent to a… more

Characteristics of American coals in relation to their conversion into clean energy fuels. Quarterly technical progress report, January-March 1978

Description: The Penn State/DOE Coal Sample Bank was expanded to include seventeen lignite seams from Texas and two samples of a western Kentucky coal. A total of 253 characterized coal samples and 539 selected printouts of coal data were provided to the coal research community. Results of further coal fractionation studies confirm previous conclusions that fractions of widely differing characteristics can be developed in the laboratory, and indicate that with appropriate process development they could be p… more

Porosity of coals and coal products

Description: Different experimental approaches for characterizing porosity of coals and coal products have been described. Results of densities, surface areas and pore volume distributions for coals of different rank and the manner in which they change upon heat treatment have been discussed. True density, that is the density of the solid phase of coals, as measured by the displacement of helium, is rank dependent. It shows a shallow minimum at about 81% carbon and rises sharply as 90% carbon is approached.… more

Electric power from inertial confinement fusion: the HYLIFE concept

Description: A high yield lithium injection fusion energy chamber is described which can conceptually be operated with pulsed yields of several thousand megajoules a few times a second, using less than one percent of the gross thermal power to circulate the lithium. The concept is suitable for either lasers or heavy ion beams propagating in background gases. Because a one meter thick blanket of lithium protects the structure, no first wall replacement is envisioned for the life of the power plant. The induc… more

Remote systems requirements of the High Yield Lithium Injection Fusion Energy (HYLIFE) converter concept

Description: Remote systems will be required in the High Yield Lithium Injection Fusion Energy Converter power plant proposed by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. During inspection operations, viewing of the chamber interior and certain pumps, valve fittings and welds must be done remotely. Ideas for remote maintenance of laser beam blast baffles, optics, and target material traps are described. Radioisotope sources and their distributions, and exposure rates at various points in the reactor vicinity are prese… more

Civilian applications of laser fusion

Description: The commercial aspects of laser fusion were evaluated in an attempt to relate the end products (neutrons and energy) to significant commercial applications. We have found that by far the largest markets and highest payoffs for laser fusion are associated with electric power production. Hence, much of this report evaluates the prospects of producing commercial electricity with laser fusion. To this end, we have described in detail a new and promising laser fusion concept--the liquid lithium wate… more

Fusion welding of irradiated AISI 304L stainless steel tubings

Description: Fast reactor irradiated AISI 304L stainless steel tubing was fusion-welded using conventional inert gas-tungsten arc welding (GTAW) procedures which were adapted for remote operation. Metallographic examination of weld joints sometimes revealed porosity in the weld zone and cracks at the tube inner wall within the heat-affected zone. A stress analysis was performed to evaluate these defects as sites for weld failure and to establish procedures for the detection and rejection of weld joints like… more

Detailed quantum transition state theory. Application to collinear reactions

Description: The applicability of the detailed quantum transition state theory (DQTST) of Light and Siczek (J. Chem. Phys. 64, 1907(1976)) is investigated for several collinear systems. The effects of boundary conditions and the placement of the transition state surface on the DQTST predictions are considered. It is shown that the reliability of DQTST is not simply correlated with any property of the reaction path profile (barrier height or reaction exothermicity): features of the potential energy surface a… more

A Proposed Technical Communication Degree Program for Texas Colleges and Universities

Description: This investigation is concerned with the problem of Texas employers' inability to hire adequately trained technical communication personnel because Texas universities and colleges do not offer a bachelor's degree program for that career field. This study contains the results of five separate surveys that investigate the backgrounds and training of present technical communication personnel and the training desired by supervisory personnel. The study also recommends a bachelor's degree program in… more

Summary report of TASTEX Task J: resin beam mass spectrometry for safeguards

Description: Our involvement with the TASTEX program is described in Task J; progress on this task during FY-1978 is described. This task involves collaboration with the Japanese at the Tokai reprocessing facility to evolve a sampling scheme suitable for use by International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors. The samples would be taken on resin beads and shipped in that form; because of the small quantities of material involved in this sampling technique, health hazards during transport are eliminated and cos… more

Characteristics of American coals in relation to their conversion into clean energy fuels. Quarterly technical progress report, October--December 1977

Description: The Penn State/DOE Coal Sample Bank has been expanded. A total of 54 characterized coal samples and 232 selected printouts of coal data were provided upon request to the coal research community. Work has been conducted using nitrogen as a pyrolysis medium at 808/sup 0/C and seven size grades of the Texas Darco lignite (PSOC-412) as starting material. This work was intended to extend previous work on the effects of particle size on pyrolysis. A study is being made into the effects of low tempera… more

/sup 13/C NMR studies of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase containing (methyl-/sup 13/C)methionine and (guanido-/sup 13/C)arginine. [Streptococcus]

Description: (Methyl-/sup 13/C)methionine and (guanido-/sup 13/C)arginine have been incorporated with high efficiency by Streptococcus faecium var. Durans strain A into dihydrofolate reductase isoenzyme 2 and /sup 13/C NMR spectra have been obtained for the labeled enzymes and their complexes with substrates, co-factors, and inhibitors. The /sup 13/C NMR spectra exhibit a high degree of discrimination--up to six guanido-/sup 13/C resonances spanning a 1.2 ppM range have been resolved for the eight arginine … more

Effects of impregnation of coal with potassium and sodium salts

Description: Much interest has developed over the addition of potassium salts to potentially caking coals prior to their gasification. It is found that such addition markedly reduces the caking tendency of the coals, enabling them to be more easily handled in reactors. An extra bonus is found in that potassium is a good catalyst for both gasification of carbon in the presence of steam and the production of hydrogen via the water-gas shift reaction. In this report, mechanisms of how potassium salts may affec… more

The Overtures of Samuel Wesley

Description: Born into one of the most distinguished families in eighteenth-century England, Samuel Wesley (1766-1837) distinguished himself as a child prodigy, an ardent devotee of the music of J. S. Bach, and as a composer, performer and music lecturer. His four extant overtures, written from the year 1778 to 1824, offer an insight into his development as a composer. This edition, drawn from the Wesley manuscripts housed in the British Library, is preceded by a commentary dealing with Wesley's life, the h… more
