Morning light cleanup and recovery operation: simulation studies of possible reactor fuels. [Cosmos 954 orbiting Russian reactor with U-10 wt% Mo fuel]

Description: The nuclear fuel for Cosmos 954, the orbiting Russian reactor that broke up on reentry during January of 1978, has been identified as a U--Mo alloy containing about 10 wt% molybdenum. Identification was based on a combination of simulation studies at LLL, examination of fuel debris at Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE), Pinawa, Manitoba, and reactor technology knowledge. In the LLL simulation studies, mixtures of uranium, molybdenum, and UO/sub 2/ were heated under conditions that… more

Preparation and characterization of radioactive samples for various areas of research

Description: Over the past few years, many techniques have been applied by IRML to prepare radioisotope targets and related research materials from actinide and other radioisotopes. Many of these samples were prepared by ceramic technology--an R and D program extending over the past three years. Standard vapor deposition methods have been used to prepare hundreds of fission chamber and other planar samples used in determining cross sections. Refined methods of characterization of all samples have been appli… more

Vaporization thermodynamics and kinetics of hexagonal silicon carbide

Description: Mass spectrometer Knudsen effusion vaporization measurements over the temperature range 1835 to 2264K confirm earlier mass spectrometer results that Si(g) is the predominant vapor species above the SiC-C two-phase region. Si/sub 2/C(g) and SiC/sub 2/(g) are found to be the next most important vapor species. Total vapor pressures are measured to be a factor of 10 to 15 higher than values previously reported between 1800 to 2200K. Silicon partial pressures lead to a value of -7.5 kcal mol/sup -1/… more

Selenide Isotope Generator for the Galileo Mission. GDS Disassembly Report

Description: The GDS-1 was disassembled to determine the cause for the rapid degradation of the output power. Unfortunately, it was not possible to relate the observations to direct causes for the degradation. However, some positive statements can be made which have an impact on the flight program. First, the outgassing and gas management techniques were shown to be adequate to maintain clean conditions within the generator. Second, the non-modular components within the generator including the receptacles o… more

Theory of thermionic energy converter with variable plasma electron temperature

Description: A computational procedure for calculating the C-V characteristic, the plasma arc-drop and other important parameters for a cesium vapor thermionic energy converter has been developed. The original theory dealing with the constant electron temperature has been extended to treat the problem for the variable electron temperature. Comparison between the two cases shows that the C-V characteristic moves generally toward the left as the electron thermal conductivity decreases, but the magnitude of th… more

Inconel-600/T-111 alloy compatibility studies

Description: Oxidation resistant Hastelloy-C is the material presently used to clad a small radioisotopic heat source. Inconel-600 has properties and composition similar to Hastelloy-C and is under consideration as an alternate clad material. To serve this purpose, the material must be compatible with the underlying T-111 alloy strength member. Upon completion of compatibility studies, metallographic examination of the specimens revealed reaction zones that appeared to be influenced by time and temperature.… more

Quarterly report on the strontium heat source development program, Advanced Systems and Materials Production Division for April--June 1978

Description: All of the remaining compatibility tests are proceeding as scheduled. Results of the 20,000-hr compatibility tests with nonradioactive SrF/sub 2/ show that, with one exception, attack of the specimens by the SrF/sub 2/ after 20,000 hr is no greater than after 6000 and 12,000 hr. The one exception involved Haynes Alloy 25 specimens tested at 1000/sup 0/C. These test specimens exhibited isolated subsurface voids to depths of 0.025 in., although the general surface attack was only about 0.001 inch… more

Volume reduction system for solid and liquid TRU waste from the nuclear fuel cycle: April--June 1978

Description: The laboratory cyclone incinerator has been developed to study the effects of burning feed containing radionuclides other than plutonium-238. These isotopes, which will be primarily products of fission, must be efficiently removed from the off-gas if combustible waste containing such species is to be incinerated. Modifications to the original incinerator design were made to increase the efficiency of combustion and particulate removal in the system and to reduce its energy consumption. A drum c… more
