Impact of increased coal consumption in the Pacific Northwest

Description: The objectives of the National Coal Utilization Assessment are: Identification of the environmental, health and socioeconomic impacts to be expected from the increased use of coal; investigation of mitigation strategies that might be used to manage these impacts; and establishment of working relationships with state and regional agencies and utilities. A number of energy issues were identified in the course of the study. Probably the most significant issues in this region are the siting of coal… more

Review of the literature on leachates from coal storage piles

Description: Runoff from coal storage piles associated with coal conversion or combustion facilities may represent a potential source of environmental pollution. This report is an assessment of existing information on coal pile leachate. The assessment indicates that few detailed studies have been conducted to date, and these are limited and the results are highly variable. More detailed long-range studies using various types of coal are recommended. These studies should be carried out both in the laborator… more

Hydrology and geochemistry of a Hawaiian geothermal system: HGP-A

Description: A water quality monitoring program of the Hawaii Geothermal Project well A (HGP-A) was conducted for downhole depth samples and continuous discharge samples in 1976 to 1977. The well water was slightly saline (about 5 to 10 percent ocean water) and nearly depleted of magnesium, but contained high concentrations of silica and sulfide. The chemical composition of the well water did not vary much with depth even though the sampling reached the well bottom (approximately 1768 m (5800 feet) below se… more

In situ monitoring of the effects of water quality on benthic detrital decomposition

Description: Detrital decomposition is an important marine benthic process which contributes to the fertility of seas, particularly in estuarian and coastal waters. The process involves a complex community of microorganisms and small animals which interact with each other in a manner similar to that which occurs in forest litter and in composts. Plastic chambers for measuring decomposition rates of Spartina alterniflora were placed on the bottom of the sea at four sites in the northeast: Towd Point, Southam… more

National Coal Utilization Assessment: a preliminary assessment of coal utilizaton in the South. [Southern USA to 2020; forecasting]

Description: Some of the major problems and issues related to coal development and use in the South are identified and assessed assuming a base-case energy scenario for the next 45 years. This scenario assumes a midrange of coal use and a relatively high rate of nuclear use over the forecast period. The potential impacts from coal development and use are significant, particularly in the 1990-2020 time period. Practically all available sites suitable for power plant development in the assessment will be util… more

Chemical Fingerprints to Assess the Effects of Geothermal Development on Water Quality in Imperial Valley

Description: A two-year baseline water quality study was conducted in the Imperial Valley. The data accumulated, together with the drinking and irrigation water criteria and the known costs of chemical analyses, augment findings on brine chemistry throughout the Valley and on constituents in the Vail 4A Drain, an agricultural drain in the Salton Sea KGRA. These suggest minimum parameters that should be monitored in future programs for water quality management during the development of the geothermal resourc… more

Description: This case study examines the reclamation practices of the Georgia Kaolin's American Industrial Clay Company Division, a kaolin producer centered in Twiggs, Washington, and Wilkinson Counties, Georgia. The State of Georgia accounts for more than one-fourth of the world's kaolin production and about three-fourths of U.S. kaolin output. The mining of kaolin in Georgia illustrates the effects of mining and reclaiming lands disturbed by area surface mining. The disturbed areas are reclaime… more
