Expansion of Hanford concrete

Description: This report presents results of measurements of thermal expansion of concrete cores from Hanford, Washington facilities, and concrete cast at the Construction Technology Laboratories of Portland Cement Association (CTL/PCA). Thermal expansion was measured from room temperature to 1600/sup 0/F on 0.5 x 3.0-in. specimens heated at a rate of 10/sup 0/F/min. Specimens were cored from concrete cylinders cast at CTL/PCA in 1975 and 1977, and from cylindrical cores taken from the Purex Building and Wa… more

Spent unreprocessed fuel (SURF) facility evaluation plan of the alternative storage concepts

Description: Concepts were evaluated for the storage of unreprocessed spent fuel in a retrievable surface storage facility. This document provides a systematic format for making a concept selection from the seven alternative concepts presented in RHO-LD-2. Results of the evaluation was that the Drywell concept was rated highest with the Water Basin Concept and the Sealed Storage Cask concept with multiple canisters of SURF coming in a close second and third. Technical support for GEIS: radioactive waste isolation in geologic formations. Volume 14. Repository preconceptual design studies: basalt

Description: This document describes a preconceptual design for a nuclear waste storage facility in basalt. The facility design consists of several chambers excavated deep within a geologic formation together with access shafts and supportive surface structures. The facility design provides for: receiving and unloading waste containers; lowering them down shafts to the mine level; transporting them to the proper storage area and emplacing them in mined storage rooms. Drawings of the facility design are cont… more

Economics of National Waste Terminal Storage Spent Fuel Pricing Study

Description: The methodology for equitably pricing commercial nuclear spent fuel management is developed, and the results of four sample calculations are presented. The spent fuel management program analyzed places encapsulated spent fuel in bedded salt while maintaining long-term retrievability. System design was reasonable but not optimum. When required, privately-owned Away From Reactor (AFR) storage is provided and the spent fuel placed in AFR storage is eventually transported to final storage. Applicab… more

Estimating the cost of product water conveyance from desalination plants

Description: Methods are presented for estimating the costs of transporting, by pipeline, product water from desalination plants. Cost curves are presented for conveying from 19 to 380 x 10/sup 3/ m/sup 3//day (5 to 100 Mgd) to distances to 80 km (50 mile). Sand is used as the reference soil, and adjustment factors are given for earth, shale, hard rock, and swampland. Costs are given as a function of distance and include pipeline construction, pumping stations, power lines, and electrical switchgear.

Criticality safety comparisons of spent fuel facility concepts

Description: Seven storage concepts were analyzed from the viewpoint of nuclear criticality safety. All concepts, with the exception of the water basin, were assumed to use the same canister type. This 13-in. ID cylinder contains one PWR assembly (Westinghouse 17 x 17) which is composed of fresh UO/sub 2/ fuel enriched at 3.5 wt % /sup 235/U. Canister failure and water intrusion were allowed. Consideration was also given to fuel rod disintegration due to UO/sub 2/ oxidation. For the case of intact fuel rods… more

Spent fuel handling and packaging program. Management summary report

Description: Objective is to design, develop, and demonstrate a spent fuel package for geologic storage and disposal; to design, license, and construct the facilities to produce this package; and to develop and demonstrate technology for the dry, passive surface storage of spent fuel. Progress is reported on engineering and system studies, technical R and D studies, demonstrations, project support studies, spent fuel facility project, and program management.

Analytical Methodology and Facility Description Spent Fuel Policy

Description: Three generic environmental impact statements (GEISs) on domestic fuels, foreign fuels, and storage charges are being prepared to provide environmental input into decisions on whether, and if so how the 1977 Presidential policy on spent fuel storage should be implmented. This report provides background information for two of these environmental impact statements: Storage of U.S. Spent Power Reactor Fuel and Storage of Foreign Spent Power Reactor Fuel. It includes the analytical methodology used… more

Cargo response to railcar impact and tiedown load analysis

Description: An analytical study that investigated the loads produced during coupling of railcars carrying heavy shipping containers is described. The structural model of the impact event is represented by a lumped parameter technique. Each discrete mass lump possesses longitudinal, vertical, and rotational degrees of freedom. The resulting computer simulation provides for nonlinear railcar coupler stiffness and linear damping forces in the coupler and container tiedowns. Results include response to paramet… more

Realistic characterization of severe railroad accidents. Case study: tank cars

Description: The objective of the paper is not to state that one can accurately define the exact nature of all railroad accidents, nor to state that accident data can easily be translated into regulations and design criteria. History has shown this to be a difficult task for even those who have frequently been involved with railroad accidents. Rather, the intent is to show that upper limits for accident frequencies, physical forces, and fire effects, etc., can be established. These limits can be based on an… more

Suspended Sediments and Related Limnology of an Alpine Lake System. 3rd year-end Report, 1 June 1977--30 September 1978. [Alaska]

Description: Three summer field seasons have been used to study methods for assessing impact of construction activity on arctic tundra lakes in terms of change in suspended sediment load regime. An aerial photographic method for evaluating and monitoring distribution of suspended sediment loads was investigated in addition to studying suspended sediment impact on primary productivity. Films and cameras were compared during the first season. During the second season, good quality aerial photographs were take… more
