Kinetics of the radiation-induced exchange reactions of H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/: a review

Description: Mixtures of H/sub 2/--T/sub 2/ or D/sub 2/--T/sub 2/ will exchange to produce HT or DT due to catalysis by the tritium ..beta.. particle. The kinetics of the reaction D/sub 2/ + T/sub 2/ = 2DT may play an important role in designing liquid or solid targets of D/sub 2/--DT--T/sub 2/ for implosion fusion, and distillation schemes for tritium cleanup systems in fusion reactors. Accordingly, we have critically reviewed the literature for information on the kinetics and mechanism of radiation-induce… more

Anion exchange of 58 elements in hydrobromic acid and in hydriodic acid

Description: Anion exchange distributions of 58 elements have been measured from 0.1-8.7M HBr and from 0.1-7.4M HI onto three strong-base resins, 8 and 4% cross-linked and macroporous. Data were obtained by 16- to 18-h dynamic batch contacts. Anion exchange in these media is compared to that in HCl. The effect of resin cross-linkage is considerably greater in HI media than in HBr and HCl media. Examples are presented of potentially useful separations using HBr and HI media alone and in combination with HCl.

Shippingport Atomic Power Station steam generator tube damage and water chemistry control (1965--1975)

Description: The four stainless steel tubed steam generators in the Shippingport Atomic Power Station were replaced in 1964 with larger, horizontal, NiCrFe Alloy 600 tubed units consistent with a power uprating of the plant. Each of the four Alloy 600 tubed units experienced tube leakage attributed to corrosion by water treatment chemicals (sodium phosphates) which concentrated locally on the tubes in inadequately flushed crevices. Corrective and preventive actions include tube plugging, flow blockage, conv… more

Removal of uv-induced pyrimidine dimers from the replicated and unreplicated DNA of human fibroblasts

Description: Excision repair in uv irradiated human fibroblasts has been examined in portions of DNA replicating after irradiation versus those remaining unreplicated. Two approaches, one using a uv-endonuclease to estimate pyrimidine dimers remaining in DNA, the other using density labeling to measure excision resynthesis, indicate that the extent of repair is the same for both replicated and unreplicated DNA.

Quadrupole mass-filter sensitivities of H/sub 2/, HD, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/, and the kinetics of. beta. -particle induced exchange between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at 25. 4/sup 0/C

Description: We have constructed a quadrupole-mass filter system to measure the equilibrium constants and rates of reaction of the ..beta..-particle-induced exchanges between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at cryogenic temperatures. Even with careful calibration experiments at 25.4/sup 0/C, we could not completely remove the mass discrimination inherent in our method. We estimate the accuracy of our mixture analyses to be +-2.2% in the D/sub 2/-DT-T/sub 2/ system, and +-9% in the H/sub 2/-HT-T/sub 2/ syst… more

Secondary recovery of plutonium and americium from process waste streams by solvent extraction

Description: A solvent extraction process is being evaluated for the secondary recovery of plutonium and americium from Rocky Flats waste streams. The bidentate organophosphorus compounds dihexyl-N,N-diethylcarbamylmethylene phosphonate and its dibutyl analogue have been shown to be selective extractants for the actinides from solutions of nitric acid. The results from laboratory test runs in which the organophosphorus extractants were used for processing secondary waste solutions will be presented. Solvent… more

Materials technology for accelerator production of fissile isotopes

Description: The materials used for the accelerator production of fissile isotopes must enable the facility to achieve maximum fuel production at a minimum cost. Neutron production in the target would be maximized by use of thorium cooled with Pb--56 percent Bi or with sodium. The thorium should be ion-plated with approximately 1 mil of nickel or stainless steel for retention of fission products. The target container will have to be replaced at frequent intervals because of the copious quantities of neutron… more

Kinetics of the ambient temperature dissolution of plutonium metal in sulfamic acid

Description: The stoichiometry and the kinetics of the ambient temperature dissolution of alpha-phase plutonium in sulfamic acid has been determined. Hydrogen off-gas rates and plutonium concentrations were calculated as functions of time for a variety of dissolving conditions. Calculations show that nominal 2.2 kg Pu buttons (surface area, 171 cm/sup 2/) should yield solutions containing 60 +- 10 g Pu/L after a one-hour dissolving cycle. Hydrogen off-gas rates were calculated to vary from as high as 780 mL… more

Limnological aspects of acid precipitation

Description: Lakes and streams in parts of Norway, Sweden, Canada, and the United States are being severely impacted by acidic precipitation. Scientists meeting at Sagamore, New York, agreed that this is the most serious limnological problem today. The factor responsible for determining the sensitivity of surface waters to acidification is alkalinity derived by weathering of soils and bedrock in the watershed. Acidification, defined as a reduction in alkalinity, can be quantified if preacidification alkalin… more

Apparatus for simultaneously measuring electrical conductivity and oxygen fugacity

Description: Electrical conductivity studies of silicates are useful in determining temperature vs depth in the earth. Realistic laboratory measurements of conduction mechanisms require that exact determinations of oxygen fugacity (fo{sub 2}) be made in the experimental environment. An apparatus is described that monitors system fo{sub 2} with a calcia-doped zirconia-oxygen cell while measuring electrical conductivity of iron-bearing silicates at high temperature (greater than 1000 K). The fo{sub 2} calcula… more

Procedure for the analysis of americium in complex matrices

Description: A radioanalytical procedure for the analysis of americium in complex matrices has been developed. Clean separations of americium can be obtained from up to 100 g of sample ash, regardless of the starting material. The ability to analyze large masses of material provides the increased sensitivity necessary to detect americium in many environmental samples. The procedure adequately decontaminates from rare earth elements and natural radioactive nuclides that interfere with the alpha spectrometric… more
