Power plant performance analysis and guidelines study. Appendix III. Reliability and efficiency index data

Description: Historical data from the EEI, FPC, NRC, FEA, and participating utilities were evaluated for each of the four reliability and efficiency indices recommended to the California Energy Commission. Data were not available for all unit sizes for the full period 1971 to 1975. However, the available data were analyzed to arrive at historical averages and ranges of averages for each of the recommended indices. Feasible ranges and averages of each index for units of different sizes and fuel types are pre… more

Power plant performance analysis and guidelines study. Appendix II. Reliability and efficiency indices

Description: Four indices of power plant performance have been identified for use by the CERCDC in the technical evaluation of cost-effective levels of reliability and efficiency of future power plants, to be sited in the State of California. The selected indices are Capacity Factor, Operating Availability, Equivalent Availability, and Heat Rate. The write-up on each index includes a discussion on the Index Definition, Historical Data Availability/Sources and Recommendations for Application by the Commissio… more

Assessment of the potential of solar thermal small power systems in small utilities. Final report

Description: This study involved an assessment of the potential economic benefit of small solar thermal electric power systems to small municipal and rural electric utilities. Five different solar thermal small power system configurations were considered in the study representing three different solar thermal technologies. The configurations included: (1) 1-MW, 2-MW, and 10-MW parabolic dish concentrators with a 15-kW heat engine mounted at the focal point of each dish. These systems utilized advanced batte… more

Electric power supply and demand 1978--1987 for the continuous United States as projected by the Regional Electric Reliability Councils in their April 1, 1978 long-range coordinated planning reports to the Department of Energy

Description: The Regional Reliability Council projections of peak demand, generating capability, and electric energy requirements for the contiguous U.S. have declined for the fourth consecutive year. On the basis of these projections, it appears that the electric utility industry believes the U.S. will experience smaller annual increases in power use than have occurred in the past. The summer peak demand growth rates of the Councils range from 3.52 percent annually, as projected by the Northeast Power Coor… more

Geothermal power plants of the United States: a technical survey of existing and planned installations

Description: The development of geothermal energy as a source of electric power in the United States is reviewed. A thorough description is given of The Geysers geothermal power project in northern California. The recent efforts to exploit the hot-water resources of the Mexicali-Imperial Rift Valley are described. Details are given concerning the geology of the several sites now being used and for those at which power plants will soon be built. Attention is paid to the technical particulars of all existing … more

Hydrogen storage technology for metal hydrides

Description: The advantages of using hydrogen as a secondary energy carrier are stated, and numerous factors pertinent to the technology of hydrogen storage via metal hydrides are briefly described. The technology is centered on iron-titanium hydride, FeTiH/sub x/, as the most practical choice for the safe and compact storage of hydrogen. Uses of hydride hydrogen as a fuel or energy carrier are given. The features of hydride reservoir designs are explained, and some performance data are given for two reserv… more

Utility plans for utilization of geothermal energy in California

Description: Early in 1976, JPL conducted a survey of California utilities to ascertain their views on the probable rate of geothermal development in the State of California in the immediate future (Reference 1). At the time the survey was conducted, the only firm utility plans for geothermal generating capacity were for the Geysers dry steam field in Northern California; experimental work on utilization of the hot water fields of the Imperial Valley was in its early stages. All of the utilities contacted i… more

The Bulalo geothermal reservoir Makiling-Banahao area, Philippines

Description: The Bulalo field, located within the Makiling-Banahao geothermal prospect, is being explored and developed by Philippine Geothermal Incorporated (PGI), a branch of the Union Oil Company of California. During the past four years, twenty-eight wells have been drilled and completed in the Bulalo heat anomaly. These wells have defined a large geothermal reservoir characterized by a high-temperature effluent which can be spontaneously produced to generate commercial power. An extensive flow testing … more

Recent Activities at the Cerro Prieto Field

Description: The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the latest activities of interest to reservoir engineers at the Cerro Prieto geothermal field. Special emphasis is given to the wells drilled in 1978 for exploration purposes and to provide steam to the existing and future power plants. The present power output is 75MW. Two additional 37.5MW units are scheduled to go on line in March and May 1979, while the total generating capacity at Cerro Prieto will reach about 400MW in 1985. Additional infor… more
