Toxic fumes from explosives: ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures

Description: The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and NO/sub 2/ fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau's large closed gallery facility (7.2 x 10/sup 4/ liter expansion chamber) and in the st… more

Analytical search for the stochastic-dominating process in the drift- deposition problem

Description: The random processes in the drift-deposition problem are examined separately to see if any one of them dominates the statistical properties of the outcome. The three prime candidates are assumed to be the drop size distribution, the distribution of break-away points, and turbulent diffusion. It is seen that the drop size distribution probably has dominant infiuence on the deposition of the large-size (drift or carry-over) drops. Turbulence has a comparable iniluence on the deposition of the sma… more

Neutron activation techniques for the measurement of trace metals in environmental samples

Description: Neutron activation techniques for measuring trace metals in fresh waters, seawater, marine organisms, sediments, and atmospheric particulates are discussed. Principles of neutron activation analysis, neutron irradiation facilities and procedures, and sample preparation including preconcentration and postirradiation separations are outlined.
