SNAP 19 Pioneer F and G. Final report

Description: The generator developed for the Pioneer mission evolved from the SNAP 19 RTG's launched aboard the NIMBUS III spacecraft. In order to satisfy the power requirements and environment of earth-escape trajectory, significant modifications were made to the thermoelectric converter, heat source, and structural configuration. Specifically, a TAGS-2N thermoelectric couple was designed to provide higher efficiency and improved long term power performance, and the electrical circuitry was modified to yie… more

Cooperative geochemical investigation of geothermal resources in the Imperial Valley and Yuma areas. Final report

Description: Preliminary studies indicate that the Imperial Valley has a large geothermal potential. In order to delineate additional geothermal systems a chemical and isotopic investigation of samples from water wells, springs, and geothermal wells in the Imperial Valley and Yuma areas was conducted. Na, K, and Ca concentrations of nearly 200 well water, spring water, hot spring, and geothermal fluid samples from the Imperial Valley area were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Fournier and Tr… more

Final environmental statement for the geothermal leasing program

Description: This second of the four volumes of the Geothermal Leasing Program final impact statement contains the individual environmental statements for the leasing of federally owned geothermal resources for development in three specific areas: Clear Lake-Geysers; Mono Lake-Long Valley; and Imperial Valley, all in California. It also includes a summary of the written comments received and departmental responses relative to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement issued in 1971; comments and responses on… more

Examination of T-111 clad uranium nitride fuel pins irradiated up to 13,000 hours at a clad temperature of 990/sup 0/C

Description: The examination of 27 fuel pins irradiated in the Plum Brook reactor facility is described. Curtailment of NASA sponsored nuclear programs prevented a complete examination of all pins. Nevertheless, results include fuel pin integrity, clad ductility, clad strain, fission gas release, fuel burnup, fuel swelling, neutron fluence, metallography, and instrumentation reliability. Twenty-two fuel pins were tested for fission gas leaks; 13 pins leaked with two having visible cracks. Fuel swelling appe… more

Economic Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) study. Volume I. ERTG design. Final report

Description: The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop and evaluate an ERTG design for a high power, Curium-244 fueled system based on the tubular thermoelectric module technology; (2) to prepare a program plan for the development of a flight qualified ERTG; and (3) to estimate the costs associated with the production of one, ten and twenty flight qualified ERTG's. This volume presents the Reference Design ERTG approach, the results of the engineering trade studies leading to its selection, and the … more

Development of a thermionic-reactor space-power system. Final summary report

Description: Initial experimental work led to the award of the first AEC thermionic contract on May 1, 1962, for the development of fission heated thermionic cells with an operating life of 10,000 hours or more. Two types of converters were fabricated: (1) electrically heated, and (2) fission heated where the fuel was either uranium carbide or uranium oxide. Competition between GGA and GE was climaxed on July 1, 1970 by the award to GGA of a contract to develop an in-core thermionic reactor. This report is … more

The Marysville, Montana, Geothermal Project: Environmental Analysis of the Deep Geothermal Research Well

Description: The objective of this research project is to investigate a geothermal anomaly of high heat flow discovered in 1969 in central Montana, and to determine how this natural resource might be developed as a source of useful energy. Under Phase I, the natural resource will be explored, drilled, and modeled at an estimated cost of $2,588,935 over a 3-year period. Phase II, depending upon the nature of the heat source, will be developing the resource under a cooperative effort of government and private… more

Geothermal gas sampling methods

Description: A method for geothermal gas collection for chemical and isotopic gas analysis is described. The CO/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/S are absorbed in a NaOH solution and the residual gas collected in a bottle. The method can be used for sampling gases from hot springs, fumaroles, steam wells, hot water wells, etc. (WHK)
