MOUND LABORATORY PROGRESS REPORT FOR JUNE 1963

Description: 3 8 ; 9 4 5 7 5 C 9 E ; < : 7over a 1456-day period. The half life was calculated to be 12.355 plus or minus 0.0l0 years, based on measurements in three calorimeters. The yields of /sup 208/Po and /sup 209/Po from the irradiation of multicurie quantities of /sup 210/Po were calculated. Production of small quantities of /sup 208/Po and /sup 209/Po is possible by the (n,xn) reaction; however, large quantities of /sup 210/Po would be present in the /sup 208/Po--/sup 209/Po sample. On the basis of … more

A Review of Ultrasonic Imaging Methods, With a Selected, Annotated Bibliography

Description: This review includes a discussion of many methods for detecting ultrasonic images with emphasis upon the problems involved in a nondestructive inspection system employing ultrasonic imaging techniques. The detection methods are compared from the standpoint of threshold sensitivity. It is concluded that a system which will respond to an ultrasonic intensity of 10/sup -3/ w/cm/sup 2/ or less will probably be necessary for a practical nondestructive inspection system. The detection methods which m… more

STEAM SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY UNDER THE EURATOM PROGRAM. Quarterly Progress Report, July 1, 1963-September 30, 1963

Description: Calibration of the liquid-level detector for steam-water facility is complete from 600 to 2000 psig. Permissible steam release rates for 24 and 36 inches above the interface are established for the test pressures. The correlalation equation which relates steam void fraction to basic system parameters is further refined to include ail the data from this program as well as from the low-pressure steam-water facility. By addition of another dimensionless term to the equation it is possible to exten… more

HANDBOOK FOR THE NANO-SECOND ELECTRON ACCELERATOR (NSEA)

Description: As an aid to prospective users of the device, the electron accelerator, the detection system, and the readout equipment are described; and the operational procedures followed are explained. Maintenance instructions are also given, as are diagrams of many components. The apparatus was designed mainly for studying scintillation decay times in the nsec region. (D.C.W.)

DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF PROTOTYPE REMOTE-CONTROLLED SODIUM-BONDING AND BOND-INSPECTION PROCESSES FOR EBR-II FUEL CYCLE FACILITY

Description: The EBR-II plant includes an integral, remote-controlled Fuel Cycle Facility wherein spent fuel elements are to be pyrometallurgically refined, refabricated, inspected, and reassembled for return to the reactor. A description is given of the experimentally supported changes and refinements made in the prototype sodium-bonding and bondinspection equipment to ensure: (1) acceptable fuel elements for the initial core loading; and (2) equally acceptable elements in production quantities in the pare… more

PROCESSING OF MULTI-CHANNEL-ANALYZER NUCLEAR REACTION SPECTRA WITH THE NEWDAC PROGRAM

Description: A FORTRAN program is presented for processing pulse-height data for particles emitted from a nuclear reaction. The program corrects the particle energy for any absorber preceding the detector and computes the differential center-of-mass cross section as a function of the reaction Q value and the excitation energy of the final nucleus. The energies can be computed either relativistically or nonrelativistically. The program is written as a series of subroutines to facilitate possible expansion of… more

THE USE OF COLOR CENTERS FOR THE DETECTION AND MEASUREMENT OF RADIATION INDUCED DEFECTS

Description: The use of color centers showed that the number of defects produced in NaCl by fast reactor neutrons is consistent with existing theories on radiation damage. Color centers were also used to siudy the growth and annealing of defects formed in Al/sub2/O/sub 3/ and fused silica by reactor irradiations. Overall, as the amealing temperature was raised for Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, the number of reactor-induced defects decreased and at 700 and 730 un. Concent 85% C they disappeared entirely. Reactor-irradi… more

Measured Doppler Coefficient of Thorium Dispersed in Graphite

Description: The Doppler coefficient in thorium dispersed in graphite was measured in a reactor spectrum developed in the HTGR critical assembly, using a reactivity technique that compares the reactivity of a single cold element and a single hot element heated to 700 deg K. The considerable correction due to the small perturbation in neutron temperature resulting from the heating has been experimentally determined by auxiliary measurements. An activation technique has been used to check the results. In this… more

SNAP 7 PROGRAM--TASK 8--STRONTIUM-90 FUELED THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR DEVELOPMENT. Quarterly Progress Report No. 7, May 1 through July 31, 1962

Description: The effort on SNAP 7A and 7C was confined to operating the reliability model. There were fluctuations in output power that can be attributed to variations in the operating parameters, plus an increase in the internal resistance. In the SNAP 7B project the second 60-watt generator was completed and has undergone the beginning-of-life (maximum input, helium gas) portion of the parametric tests. The performance was nearly identical to that of the first 60-watt generator. The unit will be used with… more

MEAN SQUARE VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION MEASUREMENTS WITH NEUTRON-SENSITIVE ION CHAMBERS

Description: The mean square fluctuation voltage in neutron sensitiv ion chambers was measured rather than the d-c current to improve gamma discrimination and eliminate d-c cable leakage interference currents. The circuitry and chambe are described, and performance in the mean square volta mode is compared with that in the d-c current mode. (D.C.W.)

The calorimetric assay of the sample will be continued ior several years to decrease the probable error. The decay scheme for /sup 209/Po--/sup 209/Po/ isitopic mixtures is being determined. The gamma spectrum is being studied using two sources of different isotopic composition. Definite peaks were established at 76, 260, 300, 575, and 9l0 kev. Colloidal Radioalbumin Aggregates for Organ Scanning

Description: Colloidal aggregates (10 to 20 m mu ) of human serum albumin /sup 131/I may be used safely by intravenous injection to perform photoscans of the heart, liver, spleen, stomach, and salivary glands in man. Large particle size suspensions (10 to 50 mu ) of the same material were investigated experimentally in animals for scanning the lungs after intravenous injection and the brain following injection into an internal carotid artery. The advantages of this test material are the relatively low radia… more
