Supporting Analysis for Thermal Suitability of Fuel Elements for SM-1A Core I Loading

Description: A recommended SM-1A Core I loading chart was derived from available, metallurgically acceptable elements at the SM-1A and SM-1 sites. The derivation was based on local thermal and hydraulic considerations of minimum elementto- element coolant channel clearances. These clearances were determined from field inspection measurements of outer fuel plate spacing, as modified by analytical calculations of plate ripple growth during exposure to reactor operating thermal stresses. PATHFINDER ATOMIC POWER PLANT STEAM SEPARATOR DEVELOPMENT

Description: Development of a steam separator the Pathfinder Reactor is reported. A full-scale separator model was developed through the combination of scale-model testing and the application of principles associated with the existing theory of centrifugal separation. This model was put through full-scale air-water tests which led to modifications and a final design which meets Pathfinder requirements. Design data are included for the reactor and the steam separator. (J.R.D.)

KINETIC EXPERIMENTS ON WATER BOILERS-"A" CORE REPORT-PART II. ANALYSIS OF RESULTS

Description: The status of the analytic portion of the KEWB program at the time of completion of the spherical core experiments is summarized. Three computer programs were developed for use in this analytic effort. The first reassembles and smooths three decades of reactor power data read separately from oscillogram records of reactor excursions. It then computes the logarithmic derivative of the power, energy release, fuel solution temperature, and temperature compensated reactivity. The second program uti… more

Critical Studies of a Fast Reactor Core Containing Depleted Uranium and Sodium as Diluents. (ZPR-III Assembly 36)

Description: Critical studies were performed with a metallic, fast reactor core designed to snvestigate the effects of replacing highly absorbing U/sup 238/ diluent with high-scattering, lowabsorbing sodium diluent. The fuel was 15.7 wt% enriched U/sup 235/ and the core contained 18.2 vol% sodium and 12.68 vol% stainless steel. The experimental program was designed to measure the effect of the material replacement on spectral indices, which consisted of the standard fission ratios, foil irradiations, and a … more

Detailed Stress Analysis of SM-1 Steam Generator Tube Sheet

Description: The detailed stress analysis of the SM-1 steam generator tube sheet showed it to be safe from strain cycling damage. However, the pressure stresses were greater than the yield strength during the hydrostatic test. The differential between pressure stresses and yield strength indicates that some initial deformation may have taken place in the tube sheet. (auth)

Effects of Seismic Vibrations on the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor

Description: The effects of seismic vibrations on the dynamic behavior of a composite system were analyzed. The equations of motion were derived and soIved with special emphasis on determining the resulting stresses. The method of analysis thus developed was applied to the composite structure consisting of the core, pressure vessel, and supporting skirt of the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR). A system with three degrees of freedom was considered in order to determine the effects of an earthquake of t… more

Stress and Deflection of Boiler Fuel Element Boxes

Description: Equations were derived by strain-energy methods for analyzing the stress and deflection in the boiler fuel element boxes used in the Pathfinder nuclear reactor. These boxes are of two types, both constructed of Zircaloy lI. One box is approximately 5 in. sq. The second is approximately 10 1/2 in. sq divided internally into four compartments (5 in. sq) by a cruciform control-rod guide structure. Stress and deflection in the box walls are caused by pressure differences across the walls. The equat… more
