A Study of the Kinetic and Mechanical Properties of a Stabilized Beta Phase Plutonium Alloy

Description: The elements Sn, Mg, Ti, Zr, Hf, Si, Cd, and U were alloyed with plutonium to determine their effect on stabilization of the beta phase. Zirconium was found to be the ' most effective. Kinetic studies were conducted on Pu-Zr alloys having 0.24, 0.65, and 1.7 at.% Zr contents. The beta to alpha transformation in the Pu-Zr alloys was somewhat similar to that in unalloyed plutonium. The main difference being that time, temperature, transformation curves of the alloys were shifted to the right as t… more

Multigroup Calculations of Effective Delayed-Neutron Fractions, Prompt- Neutron Lifetime, and Related Kinetics Parameters. IBM-704 Program 1188/RE

Description: In the course of a recent study of kinetics parameters, it was found that RE-185, because of its limitations, was inadequate to handle the problems involved with the reactors considered. Program ll88/RE was written entirely independent of and is intended to make RE-185 obsolete. The multigroup calculations of primary interest performed by the code are as follows: the total effective delayed-neutron fraction and its distribution into six ' families'' which are characterized by their periods; the… more

Physics Division Summary Report, February-March 1962

Description: Progress is reported in experimental nuclear physics on calculations concerning the distribution of lifetimes of neutrons in glass scintillation neutron detectors and on the probabilities for single, double, and triple scattering of neutrons in thin plates. Precision measurements of gamma-ray energies and intensities were used to modify and extend the level scheme of Hf/ sup 178/. The presence of three K = 0 rotational bands (besides the ground state) and two K = 2 rotational bands are indicate… more

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION SUMMARY REPORT, JANUARY-MARCH 1962

Description: Additional experiments conducted on nitridation of irradiated U-fissium fuel pins revealed that irradiation does not greatly affect the nitridation rate at 300 deg C. In skullreclamation development, a phase separation common to both the blanket- and skull-processes was investigated in which a 50% Mg-- Zn supernatant solution was removed from precipitated U metal. In most runs the supernatant phase was removed with negligible U entrainment. The reduction rate of ZrO by Zn--Mg solution under sku… more

Chemical Technology Division, Chemical Development Section C Progress Report for October-December 1961

Description: Recovery of Th (and U) from Granitic Rock. Recovery of Th by acid leaching ten addltlonal granite samples (36 to 82 ppm Th) from the Conway formation in N. H. ranged from about 50 to 85%, and averaged about 70%, Study of the effect of grind size on the recovery of Th from Conway and Plkes Peak granites showed no significant differences in the range minus 20 to minus 200 mesh. The Th concentration in a sized Conway granite sample was found to be much greater in the fine than in the coarse fracti… more
