DEVELOPMENT OF PLUTONIUM-BEARING FUEL MATERIALS. Progress Report for Period January 1 through March 31, 1962

Description: During this reporting period, particular effort was of aced on powder blending and pellet sintering studies prior to irradiation sample fabrication, and, subsequently, the production and characterization of the pellets slated for irradiation. Also, PuO/sub 2/ and UO/sub 2/-PuO/sub 2/ characterization studies were continued, and new techniques are being developed. Specifically, dynamic moisture pickup determinations on PuO/sub 2/ were made in moist air, N, and CO/ sub 2/ atmospheres using a reco… more

Fire and Explosion Tests of Plutonium Gloveboxes

Description: To test the fire and explosion resistance of new plutonium metallurgy gloveboxes and to obtain information pertinent to fire control, fire and explosion tests were conducted in one of the gloveboxes. It was found that over l0% oxygen is required for non-metal, and that over 5% oxygen is required for freely burning metal fires. However, metal chips will burn with as little as 1% oxygen if additional heat is furnished. Standard dry chemical, Met-L-X, and carbon dioxide extinguishers were excellen… more

High-Temperature Reactions of Type 304 Stainless Steel in Low Concentrations of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide

Description: Compatibility studies of type 304 stainless steel in helium containing low concentrations of CO and CO/sub 2/ were conducted. The oxidation rates were insensitive to impurity concentrations between 0.0006--0.3 vol% in the temperature range 400--1000 deg C when P/sub co2/P/sub co/ was less than 0.66. Ratios above this value resulted initially in a slow oxidation rate, but was followed by an accelerated attack. The incubation period for the break-away varied with the P/sub co2//P/sub co/ ratio an… more

PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF A HYDROGEN-COOLED IN-PILE LOOP FOR THE EGCR

Description: A discussion is presented concerning the preliminary design and hazards evaluation of a H-cooled in-pile experimental loop for operation in the large double-walled through-tube in the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor (EGCR) at Oak Ridge. This loop is designed to permit experimentation with full-scale fuel element configurations up to 8 in. OD, at inlet gas temperatures of 600 to 950 deg F at 300 psig, and experimental power levels up to 500 kw. The results of a preliminary hazards evaluation ind… more

Kinetic Studies of the Reactions Occurring Between Tungsten and Gases at Low Pressure and High Temperatures

Description: Oxygen, nitrogen, and nitric oxide gases were passed through a system consisting of a tungsten filament, an ion gauge, and a mass spectrometer. The ion gauge recorded total pressures and the spectrometer recorded partlal pressures of O/sub 2/, N/sub 2/, NO, CO, COa, and H/sub 2/O. From the way these pressures changed with filamert temperature, the rates of conversion of O/sub 2/ to volatile tungsten oxides and O, and of NO to volatile tungsten oxides N/sub 2/ , O/sub 2/, and O were computed. Th… more

BIO-ORGANIC CHEMISTRY QUARTERLY REPORT. December 1961, January andFebruary 1962

Description: It has been known for a hundred years that formaldehyde polymerizes to carbohydrate substances in alkaline media. Although the reaction has long attracted much attention, only recently has a detailed qualitative analysis of the products been carried out by chromatographic methods. We have started to re-examine this reaction by combining chromatography with radioactive tracer techniques in the hope of refining the quantitative aspects of the analysis. Our particular interest has been to develop … more

Measurements of Plant Carbon Dioxide Exchange by Infra-Red Absorption Under Controlled Conditions and in the Field

Description: This technical report finds that "Infra-red gas analysis provides the most rapid and accurate method of measuring CO2 exchange by terrestrial plants in the field or in the laboratory." The report identifies drawbacks to this process and proposes useful future developments. The report is accompanied by images portraying the process.

Effect of CO$sub 2$ on the Strength and Ductility of Type 304 Stainless Steel at Elevated Temperatures

Description: The mechanisms by which the carbon dioxide coolant affects the strength properties of type 304 stainless steel were investigated in the range 1300 to 1700 deg F (704-927 deg C). Creep- and stress-rupture results obtained on sheet materials in wet and dry CO/sub 2/ and argon are compared. The effect of annealing in CO/sub 2/ on the tensile strength and ductility was also investigated. The question of whether the strengthening observed in CO/sub 2/ was due to oxidation or carburization was determ… more

Development of Pulsed Neutron Application to Power Reactor Start-Up Procedures. First Quarterly Progress Report, April 1-June 30, 1962

Description: Activities in a program to develop techniques in the use of pulsed neutron sources to measure shutdown parameters related to large thermal power reactors are reported. The experimental work centers around aspects of detecting neutrons in the presence of 10/sup 7/ r/hr gamma fields. The feasibility of U/ sup 235/ coated solid state detectors for use in these measurements is being studied. A theoretlcal investigation is also in progress on the effects of a multi-region assembly on the fundamental… more
