Some X-Ray and Fast Neutron Response Characteristics of Silver Metaphosphate Glass Dosimeters

Description: A study was conducted to determine the adequacy of silver metaphosphate glass as a dosimeter for gamma radiation coexistent with fast neutrons. The fast-neutron response in the energy region encompassing a major pcrtion of the fission spectrum was determined and a method of decreasing the photon-energy dependence was developed. The size of the dosimeter and reprcducibility of results make this system a useful addition to gamma -ray dosimetry. particularly for gamma rays coexistent with neutrons… more

The Decay of Neptunium-238

Description: >A study was made of the energy levels of Pu/sup 238/ which are populated by Np/sup 238/ beta decay, by an examination of the Np/sup 238/ conversion electron spectrum in high-resolution beta spectrographs. The general features of the level scheme as previously given were unchanged but several new transitions were observed, with energies of 119.8, 871, 943, 989, and 1034 kev. Two new levels are postulated at 915 and 1034 kev which accommodate all but the 943-kev transition. A possible assignment… more

DESIGN STUDIES ON CESIUM-137 AS A SOURCE FOR HIGH LEVEL GAMMA IRRADIATORS. Quarterly Progress Report No. 3 Covering the Period from December 1, 1959 to March 1, 1960

Description: Experiments were carried out on a Cs/sup 137/ plaque source of 40 x 40 x 1/2 inches. Measurements were made of dose distributions in water and of photon spectral distributions in paraffin. For 9-inch-thick water siab absorbers without air gaps, it was found from the preliminary experiments that the depth dose uniformity can be varied over the range 1.10 to 1.40. The absolute dose rates found were in general agreement with design predictions which indicate irradiator efficiencies in the region o… more

ILLUMINATION OF 80$sub 4$ CHAMBER

Description: An estimate is made of the illumination required for the 80-in. bubble chamber, based on the absolute sensitivity of the film. The required intensity is estimated to be 23.4 tube is calculated to be 145 cm/sup 2/. The results are compared with these obtained from 72- and 20-inch chambers. (D.L.C.)

Photon-Induced Neutron Spectrum from Uranium

Description: An experiment has been performed using nuclear emulsions to measure the neutron flux and energy spectrum from a thick uranium target bombarded by 18-Mev electrons. The total integrated flux of 3.6 x 10(-4) neutrons/electron found here is considerably lower than the figure reported by other investigators. We attribute this discrepancy primarily to a wandering of the electron beam. The neutron spectrum should be unaffected. In addition to the expected peak at 1 Mev the energy spectrum shows a sec… more
