A Flight Investigation of the Thermal Properties of an Exhaust Heated Wing De-Icing System on a Lockheed 12-A Airplane

Description: "The thermal properties are presented for the exhaust heated wing de-icing system of a Lockheed 12-A airplane which has successfully prevented a wing icing in 25 hours of flying in various icing conditions. The quantities of heat supplied for de-icing of the wings under various conditions were measured and are presented. The distribution of temperatures above the ambient air temperature for the wing surface under various operating conditions are given" (p. 1).

The temperature of unheated bodies in a high-speed gas stream

Description: From Summary: "The present report deals with temperature measurements on cylinders of 0.2 to 3 millimeters diameter in longitudinal and transverse air flow at speeds of 100 to 300 meters per second. Within the explored test range, that is, the probable laminar boundary layer region, the temperature of the cylinders in axial flow is practically independent of the speed and in good agreement with Pohlhausen's theoretical values; Whereas, in transverse flow, cylinders of certain diameter manifest … more

Temperature Recording in High-Speed Gases

Description: The development of suitable thermometer shapes giving the amount of temperature rise if possible without calibration and affording ready repetition is predicated upon a fundamental elucidation of this heating on a number of elementary body forms. This report provides results of tests at subsonic and supersonic velocities.

Comparison of Intercooler Characteristics

Description: "A method is presented of comparing the performance, weight, and general dimensional characteristics of inter-coolers. The performance and dimensional characteristics covered in the comparisons are cooling effectiveness, pressure drops and weight flows of the charge and cooling air, power losses, volume, frontal area, and width. A method of presenting intercooler data is described in which two types of charts are plotted; (1) A performance chart setting forth all the important characteristics o… more
