Empirical corrections to the span load distribution at the tip

Description: An analysis of existing pressure-distribution data was made to determine the variation of the tip loading with wing plan form. A series of empirical tip corrections was derived that may be added to theoretical curves in certain cases to obtain a closer approach to the actual loading at the tip. The analysis indicated that the need for a tip correction decreases as either the aspect ratio or the wing taper is increased. In general, it may be said that, for wings of conventional aspect ratio, cor… more

Hydrodynamic tests in the N.A.C.A. tank of a model of the hull of the Short Calcutta flying boat

Description: "The hydrodynamic characteristics of a model of the hull of the Short Calcutta (N.A.C.A. Model 47) are presented in non-dimensional form. This model represents one of a series of hulls of successful foreign and domestic flying boats the characteristics of which are being obtained under similar test conditions in the N.A.C.A. tank. The take-off distance and time for a flying boat having the hull of the Calcutta are compared at two values of the gross load with the corresponding distances and tim… more

The Gyroplane: Its Principles and Its Possibilities

Description: This report begins by indicating several simple principles concerning the velocity distribution over the blades of a lifting propeller of diameter D, revolving at n revolutions per second, and animated by a horizontal movement of translation at speed V. The calculation, compared with the test data, has shown that the aerodynamic action of the air on the blades depends almost only on the velocity components in a plane at right angles to the blade span. A history of gyroplane and gyrocopter devel… more

Helicopter Problems

Description: The present report deals with a number of the main problems requiring solution in the development of helicopters and concerning the lift, flying performance, stability, and drive. A complete solution is given for the stability of the helicopter with rigid blades and control surfaces. With a view to making a direct-lift propeller sufficient without the addition of auxiliary propellers, the "flapping drive" is assessed and its efficiency calculated.

Tandem Air Propellers

Description: Report discussing tests of 2-blade, adjustable-pitch, counterrotating tandem model propellers, adjusted to absorb equal power at maximum efficiency. The characteristics at several pitch settings and diameter spacings were compared with 2-blade and 4-blade propellers. Tandem propellers were found to have an advantage over single propellers at higher pitch settings.

Stability of Castering Wheels for Aircraft Landing Gears, Special Report

Description: In many installations of castering rubber-tired wheels there is a tendency for the wheel to oscillate violently about the spindle axis. This phenomenon, popularly called 'shimmy,' has occurred in some airplane tail wheels and has been corrected in two ways: first by the application of friction in the spindles of the tail wheels; and, second, by locking the wheels while taxiing at high speeds. Shimmy is common with the large wheels used as nose wheels in tricycle landing gears and, since it is i… more

Notes on Factors Affecting Geometrical Arrangement of Tricycle-Type Landing Gears

Description: The effects of the geometrical arrangement of tricycle landing gears on various characteristics of an airplane equipped with such landing gear is discussed. The characteristics discussed include directional stability, overturning tendencies, steering and ground handling, shimmy, takeoff, and porpoising. The conclusions are summarized in a table.

The Transition Phase in the Take-Off of an Airplane, Special Report

Description: "An investigation was undertaken to determine the character and importance of the transition phase between the ground run and steady climb in the takeoff of an airplane and the effects of various factors on this phase and on the airborne part of the takeoff as a whole. The information was obtained from a series of step-by-step integrations, which defined the motion of the airplane during the transition and which were based on data derived from actual takeoff tests of a Verville AT airplane.
