Geological Survey Investigations in the U12e.05 Tunnel, Nevada Test Site

Description: From introduction: The papers comprising the various parts of this report contain the preliminary results of the U. S. Geological Survey investigations in the Ul2e.05 tunnel at the Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada (fig. 1). Reports on electrical resistivity, natural radioactivity, and heat required to raise the rocks to 100C will be issued later. A preliminary report on the geologic effects of the Blanca event is being prepared.

Description: Introduction: This report describes areas of granitic rocks suitable for underground nuclear tests within Federally-controlled land in the continental limits of the United States. This information was requested of the U. S. Geological Survey by the Albuquerque Operations Office of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, and was compiled during March 1959 by D. C. Alvord, W. J. Salt at Shallow Depths in the Coastal Plain of Texas and Louisiana

Description: From introduction: Salt occurs at depths less than 500 feet in six salt domes in Texas and Louisiana. Underground mining operations are being carried out in each of these domes. "Granite" Exploration Hole, Area 15, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada -- Interim Report: Part A, Structural, Petrographic, and Chemical Data

Description: From introduction: The "Granite" exploration hole was core drilled to determine the character of the igneous rocks from the surface to a depth of 1,200 feet and the degree of structural anisotropism of the rock within 200 feet of a point 950 feet below the surface. This report summarizes the data on the structure, chemistry, petrology and alteration of the rocks exposed at the surface in the immediate vicinity of the drill site and in the core.

It covers an area of about 1,100 square miles on the west side of the Kenai Peninsula, between Tustumena Lake and Kachemak Bay. Geology of the Mount Katmai Area, Alaska

Description: From abstract: The Mount Katmai area is on the Alaska Peninsula and comprises the Mount Katmai quadrangle, the Cape Douglas area of the adjoining Afognak quadrangle, and parts of the Karluk and Naknek quadrangles. Radioactive Rare-Earth Deposit at Scrub Oaks Mine, Morris County, New Jersey

Description: From abstract: A deposit of rare-earth minerals in the Scrub Oaks iron mine, Morris County, N. J., was mapped and sampled in 1955. The rare-earth minerals are mainly in coarse-grained magnetite ore and in pegmatite adjacent to it. Discrete bodies of rare-earth-bearing magnetite ore apparently follow the plunge of the main magnetite ore body at the north end of the mine. Radioactivity of the ore containing rare earths is about 0.2 to 0.6 milliroentgens per hour.

Geology and Ore Deposits in the Reid Inlet Area Glacier Bay, Alaska

Description: From abstract: A gold-bearing area of about 7% square miles near the head of Glacier Bay between Reid and Lamplugh Glaciers was first discovered by Mr. Joseph Ibach in 1924. The dominant rock type in the area is granodiorite, which is intruded into bedded rocks that may be of Paleozoic age. The bedded rocks consist of conglomerate, limestone, and black graphitic schist. A light-colored quartz diorite younger than the granodiorite crops out south of the mapped area.

Geology of Geikie Inlet Area, Glacier Bay, Alaska

Description: From abstract: The Geikie Inlet area is in the Glacier Bay region of southeastern Alaska, about 100 miles northwest of the city of Juneau. The area is mountainous with relief of slightly more than 5,000 feet, and the coastline is deeply indented by fiords and inlets. Most of the western half of the area is covered by glaciers.
