Experiments on Polarization in Scatterig Deuterons from Complex Nuclei and in Proton-Proton Scattering (Thesis)

Description: Abstract: "The elastic double scattering of deuterons by complex nuclei has been investigated experimentally. Measurements were made on carbon, aluminum, and copper at around 157 Mev; on lithium, beryllium, and carbon at around 125 Mev; and on carbon and aluminum at 94 Mev. The expected tensor components of the deuteron polarization have not been observed. Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and vector-type polarization as a function of angle for the scattering of deut… more

Neutral H Atom and Molecular Ion (H₂⁺) Injection into the Mirror Machine at Energies About One Mev

Description: This report presents the best estimate possible on the basis of the available information as to how high an energy would be necessary in order that the gas pressure which could be tolerated would be attainable with present techniques (say 10-(-7) mm Hg.)

Critical Mass Measurements on Graphite U²³⁵ Systems

Description: Abstract: "Measurements have been made on pseudo-cylindrical graphite-enriched uranium unreflected systems. These measurements include both critical mass determinations and time dependent measurements using a pulsed neutron source to drive the assemblies."

The Reaction Al²⁷(p,3pn)Na²⁴

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for the reaction Al²⁷(p,3pn)Na²⁴ has been measured for proton energies between 30 and 350 Mev relative to the cross section for the reaction C12(p,3pn)C11, and the absolute magnitude determined by matching with data measured with a Faraday cup at 350 Mev and at 31.5 Mev."

Transistor Driven Beam Switching Tube Decade Counter

Description: Abstract: "This paper describes an electrical readout, decade counter employing the magnetron beam switching tube with transistor drive. Double pulse resolution is one microsecond. The unit will accept a variety of transistor types and will tolerate supply voltage variations of +/- 20% at ambient temperatures up to 60 C. A "Pixie" neon indicator is driven without the use of additional transistors. A readout circuit for printer on punched paper tape is presented."

Pyrotron High-Energy Experiments

Description: "In these studies ions of several-kilovolts energy were extracted from an ion source located inside one of the peaks of the mirror field...The extraction slot of the source is located near the field injection plane, about midway between the mirror peak and the center, and ions are injected perpendicularly to magnetic field lines. In their traversal of the distance between the mirrors, the ions are in an inhomogeneous magnetic field and have a component of velocity along curved field lines. This… more

Control Concepts for Nuclear Ramjet Reactors

Description: Tory 11-A, the first experimental reactor in the Pluto nuclear ramjet program, will be tested in late 1960 at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission. The fundamental objective of Tory II-A is to demonstrate that a high power density, high-temperature, air-cooled reactor can be successfully designed, constructed, and operated. This application places requirements on the reactor control system which are considerably more stringent than those found in previous reactor systems, both f… more

Three Group Equations for a Multiplying Medium

Description: In the past it was felt that the easiest way to treat a three group equation for a MTA lattice was to solve it without certain terms. This iterative procedure converged rapidly for a medium with depleted uranium fuel, and in fact, a second iteration was not needed.

Neutron Yield in Uranium vs. Energy of Deuterons and Protons

Description: The purpose of this note is to recalculate the semi-empirical curve of neutron yield vs. deuteron energy originally obtained by H. York in order to predict, using it and the best available data, what yields may be expected for deuterons on uranium in the extrapolated energy region.

Ion Exchange Experiments with Polonium

Description: The state of polonium in aqueous solutions was investigated by means of ion exchange equilibrium studies. The distribution of the polonium between the solid and liquid phases was determined for solutions of various compositions using both a cation and an anion exchanges. These studies show that in the absence of a complexing agent polonium is hydrolyzed to such a degree that it forms monovalent cations and anions whose charge was not investigated in this study.

Decoupling Concepts and Project Cowboy

Description: This paper for the Project Vela Technical Symposium is intended to be a brief resume of the principle results of the Cowboy program. The material is taken from a report entitled "Use of Large Cavities to Reduce Seismic Waves from Underground Explosions" by Herbat, Werth, and Spring (1960). As a result, no effect is made to justify each step in the analysis; reference should be made to the complete report.

Mathematical Theory of the Lethal Action of Radiation on Yeast Cells

Description: The main part of this thesis is devoted to the derivation and study of formulas for the probability of survival of the haploid and diploid yeast cell, based on models proposed by Zirkle and Tobias. Some properties of so-called completely monotonic functions are developed, and the results are applied to the investigation of some of the more complicated formulas. Finally the theoretical expressions are compared with the experimental data obtained by Tobias.
