Cobalt-60 Bulk Grain Irradiator: Study Report

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing bulk grain irradiators. As stated in the abstract, "this report presents the results of a study to conceive, evaluate, review and estimate costs for a number of suitable designs for a Cobalt-60 Bulk Grain Irradiator; select a preferred type; and establish required criteria for future detail design and construction of the selected concept" (p. ii). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Reduction of Data for Piston Gage Pressure Measurements

Description: Report issued by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards discussing piston gage pressure and reducing errors of measurement. Sources of error are described and evaluated in order to "reduce the magnitude of overall error of measurement" (p. 1). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Tensile and Impact Properties of Selected Materials From 20 to 300 ºK

Description: Report giving the tensile and impact properties of structural materials that were experimentally determined at temperatures from 20 to 300 ºK. Tensile properties of a few materials were also determined at 4 ºK. The properties experimentally determined were the yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction of area, the stress versus strain curve, and the impact energy. The test equipment and procedures are described. The individual data are presented in tables, and the average results are displayed in graphs.

Refractive Indices and Densities of Aqueous Solutions of Invert Sugar

Description: Report of the refractive indices and densities of aqueous solutions of invert sugar at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30º C, for concentrations up to about 82 percent of invert sugar (by weight). From the results, equations have been derived which relate the refractive index and percent of invert sugar (weight in air) at each temperature. Other equations relate the absolute density and percent of invert sugar (weight in vacuum) at each temperature. Five-decimal tables giving the refractive indices and densities of invert sugar solutions containing 1 to 85 percent of sugar are given for each percentage of invert sugar at the four temperatures.

Reduction of Data for Piston Gage Pressure Measurements

Description: Report discussing pressure measurements made with piston gages that are affected by gravity, temperature, pressure, and several other variables. For accurate determinations of pressure the calculations must take these variables into account. A general equation is developed and simplified procedures for calculating pressure are illustrated.

Trends and Techniques of Public Relations in Music Education

Description: The purpose of this study represents an illustration of the techniques of public relations in music education as well as the urgent necessity for their development. Especially during; this era, American public schools are faced with the problem of providing a balanced curriculum whose chief interests lie in subjects of a scientific nature. Educators feel that this type of training is not only necessary to keep the nation ahead or equated with others scientifically, but that it is inevitably the best in preparing the student for adulthood. Public school music, in many instances, has not lived up to its responsibilities in providing the kinds of music and the type of community service it should render. Consequently, many educators feel justified in either reducing or eliminating fine arts programs in their schools. It is necessary, therefore, that the music educator study measures of encouraging musical growth in his environment, and this growth can be assured through a study of the techniques and tools of public relations.

Development of a Ti-Al-Cb Alloy for Use at 1200-1800 F

Description: A study was made on the Ti--Al-Nb system for high temperature alloys with useful strengths above 1200 deg F. Composition variations included: niobium from 17.5 to 35%, aluminum from 12.5 to 17.5%, and the addition of smaller amounts of zirconium, hafnium, tin, carbon, or boron. Short-time tensile properties were determined for one strain rate (0.0029 in./in./min.) at 1600 deg F. Stressrupture properties were obtained for a variety of temperatures and stresses. The Larson-Miller parameter was used to present these stress-rupture data so that the rupture life at various temperatures could be presented on a single plot for each alloy. (auth)

Survey of Sodium Pump Technology

Description: A review is presented of the current status of sodium pump development as related to nuclear power applications. A description is given of the design features and performance characteristics of the more important types of sodium and sodium-- potassium alloy (NaK) pumps. Some requirements for sodium pumps for future large liquid metal reactor systems are presented with some preliminary consideration of the potential of various pump types to meet these requirements. Predicting Achievement in a Graduate School of Education

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between selected criteria and academic achievement in graduate studies leading to certain master's degrees in education at North Texas State University. The major areas in education which were included were Elementary Education, Elementary School Administration and Supervision, Secondary Education, Secondary School Administration and Supervision, and Physical Education. Graduate grade-point average was used as the criterion for academic achievement.

The Effects of Group Membership upon Birth Order Differences in Anxiety and Affiliation

Description: The present study has a twofold purpose. First, it will attempt to ascertain whether ordinal position remains an effective discriminator of affiliative need and level of anxiety within the selective confines of a strong social organization, a college sorority; or whether the selective criterion of membership in the strong social organization tends to suppress the differences in affiliative need and level of anxiety between the ordinal positions. Secondly, it will attempt to further explore the relationship between affiliation and dependency.
